I'm considering 00-01 2.5RS or 97-98 Audi A4 1.8T. Similar price, around 17k (ok maybe a little more for the A4 http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/smile.gif). Pros and cons?

the Audi has MAD aftermarket support... turbo upgrades for 1.5 k, chip upgrades for $400 (+40hp), coilovers for 1.5 k...

check out www.awe-tuning.com (http://www.awe-tuning.com) for a sample...

throw a LSD on the front, if you don't get the quattro that is and you'll be set http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/smile.gif

You need a suby if you are going to come to meets and stuff right. Isn't that a requirement or something. Anyway I have driven both A4 and S4 and own a 2001 RS, SO what does that tell you. I think the Rs with not much engine work will definitly take an S4. Besides if you are looking for a better handling and balanced car go with the Rs.

That was my choice out of about 10 or 15 cars.

Oh yeah of course I'm talking about the Quattro model. Otherwise I'll consider VW, too. http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/smile.gif

I just got a WRX, and have a good friend with a 2000 RS sedan, and another with a 2000 A4 1.8T. The RS Sedan is a nice car, but there's no way it would ever take an S4. My WRX is pretty much on a par with the S4, I think (IMO) that the WRX is a better handling car, although it's sprung a little more softly than the S4.

When you're comparing the A4 1.8T and the RS (the WRX and S4 are in a different class) the RS has it standard even though I think the A4 has a slightly better torque curve. This is where things get interesting, you have to find out whether the A4 has the sport susp. package because it makes a big difference to the handling. I think the RS and A4 1.8 0-60 times are similar, but if you want to do anything to either car the A4 is going to be MUCH easier to get more power from. I'd like to say get the Sube, but I'd probably get the A4 and make some mods. Standard the RS has it, but...are you going to keep it standard??

Solve your problem and get a 2002 WRX. I think the S4 is better optioned, but nothing touches the WRX on gravel or snow, and on tarmac it still has the S4 (IMO, but of course I'd say that) and it's $15k cheaper.

You asking the same question on the AudiWorld board?

Guess what answers you will get where.

that would be $ for mods for the wrx or modded RS

Yes I'm asking the same question in VWVortex board, not in Audiworld. I personally find Audiworld people annoying, well most of them anyway http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/smile.gif. But this is a nice place.

If I'm getting the A4, I will get one with sports package that includes the sport suspension (which some people say is not available in 97 model).

I won't be AutoX-ing or rallying the car.

One more thing, if I get a used A4 at a dealer, they'll throw in b2b warranty extension to 5years/75k miles. Is there such thing for Subarus?

If I had the cash flow, there would be an Imola S4 Avant in my driveway right now. Alsas, I am a poor minion, so the 2001 RS was a logical choice. I love my car dont get me wrong, but its no S4, which I am reminded of 4 or 5 times a week when I am in my best friends 2001 S4 sedan.

Oh, but you were looking at the A4 1.8T right? I hear the insurance is cheaper on those than what the RS gets tagged at. Audi makes a fun car, and Subaru makes a fun car, go drive them both on a friday, grab some reading material, and think about both of them all weekend. Which ever one you end up with, I don't think you will be disappointed.

Sorry if I'm not making myself clear. But I'm strictly limiting myself to A4 and 2.5 RS. No WRX or S4, they're outta my budget http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/biggrin.gif.

Don't buy a 97 or 98 A4 1.8T.
They are crap.

They'll run like a bat out of hell with a boosted ECM, but you'll pay for it in the long run.

My RS isn't as fast as my old Audi, but it feels better when I push the RS. It doesn't feel like its about to explode.

More info at my site... (http://home.earthlink.net/~palmerj)

PS--
You can buy a maintenance agreement for the RS for $300 or so... just like Audi's free maintenance. I bought a 100k mile warranty for $1300. Pretty cheap.

I think they're both great cars. I was looking at the A4, too. Some things to think about:
About the same power output
2.5 RS is somewhat lighter
I think the b2b warranty on the Subie is 3 years.
You can get a brand new Subie for less than what you'd pay for a used Audi.
On the other hand, the Audi is somewhat more car.
This is really an aside, but I remember when Audi used to win all the rallys. What happened there?

Point 4 is what made me decide on the RS. I'm just not comfortable anymore with buying a car that's been driven by someone I know nothing about. Who knows what it's been through? Of course, with the added warranty, that may be a moot point. Hope this helps!

Impartial place to ask http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/smile.gif However I think that something inside of you has already chosen the SuBaRu.

I researched A4's for months & drove a bunch of them (both 1.8T & V6), finally deciding that I was going to buy one as soon as I found the right car (sport pkg, options,etc.). Then for some reason I decided to look at a 2.5RS. I drove one... and bought it the same day! I still like the Audi, but I've also noticed that they are multiplying like rabbits on the road lately. I like that my RS is a bit more unique. I think the build quality and materials may be a little better on the Audi(feels more solid), but buying my '01RS saved me almost $10,000 over the price of a new 1.8T, so I can live with it! My advice is to get whatever feels right - if it doesn't feel right to begin with, it never will. Good luck!
