View Full Version : My final plea for help
Well, the previous problem if flickering parking lights has snowballed. Now my parking lights and tail lights do not work at all.
The brake lights do still work, as well as hazards and turn signals.
One thing I did notice is that the parking lights flash when I turn the alarm on, so they are getting power apparently. Is there a wire or plug somewhere I'm missing that might be loose? I really don't want to take my car back to the dealer for repairs ... bleh. Only owned it 2 months. It is a very fun drive though, and I'm a subie fan for life!

lewscour 04-23-2001, 08:37 PM quick quesion,
do you have a CODE ALARM is so yank it its crapola.
It sounds like a alarm problem, in the world of alarms, if you can work it out diconect the lines to the alarm, this may be hard if it was installed correctly, thats the whole idea.
The odds are that it is your alarm. Subaru spent millions of dollars to provide you with a very high end electrical system. Most alarm companies spend a maybe a few thousand in R & D.
My advice to you, call a good stereo shop and ask them to do a soft disconect on the system, that means they dont rip it all out they just disconect the system. Make sure they pull the light circuits from the control module.
should only cost about $40. may save you a lot of mula and tylenol.
good luck.
ChosenWon 04-23-2001, 08:38 PM check your fuses, one may be loose or defective. outright replace the one concerning your lights. Other than that, it may be a ground out...how or where is anyone's guess.
ChosenWon 04-23-2001, 08:41 PM also read up in your manual on the reset button under the steering column, and do a ECU reset....Yes I am reaching here.
Well, The alarm is am 'Executive' system. No idea much about it, it was installed by the previous owner, or came with the car new. Not sure either way. The alarm still works good though. I really don't want to have to pull it, I has nasty neighbors that I wouldn't put it past them to mess with my new car. http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/frown.gif
I did pull all the fuses that had anything to do with lights, all were still intact in both boxes.
Another thing that is 90% chance of unrelated is that I got that rustproofing system put in (Hey - it was free) and it has 2 leads to battery, and that's it.

ChosenWon 04-23-2001, 08:52 PM In the computer buisness we break it all down to the bare stock, and then build back up to narrow the problem. Pull the rustproofing stuff, pull the alarm, pull any extra stereo stuff, etc.
BTW do the four-ways work?
Hazards work, but the parking light by the switch on top of the wheel does not

lewscour 04-23-2001, 09:28 PM hi again.
well not sure what to tell you. all i do know is i installed sytems during my college days and i would still hold the alarm as the possible suspect.
If i was in ny i would disconect it for you for a afternoon and see what happens.
You may want to talk to some install guys at a shop and see if they will unhook it for you for a few hours and rehook it for one price, or maybe after hours.
believe me, when i was did it i made more on side jobs for my friends in school then i did at work.
maybe worth the try.
P.S. if any of you are going to upgrade your Speakers, Go with FOCAL, unreal sound and only need a couple of smaller amps to push them. Worth the money.
ChosenWon 04-23-2001, 09:49 PM Ok, now I am really reaching.....It is beging to sound like a bad switch. Use a can of air and blow it out as much as possible Flip the switch a few times while you do it. also play with the switch on top of the steering column. oh and as we say with all the "posessed" computer calls we get, face it towards east and pray!
Well folks, thanks for all the advise, I will try some of the ideas tommorow. I have to drive home from work after dark, so I've been taking back roads as to not get pulled over with no tail lights! Heh heh. I don't need another stupid ticket.
