OK, so here is the situation. it may seem obvious, but for some odd reason I cannot figure it out.
My roomates '99 2.5RS needs a tune up. I have done plenty a tube up in my day, so I offered to help. But every car I have done them on is a bent or an inline, never a boxxer.

so I told him what to get, which wires to buy, what plugs to get (which no one has in stock), and go get a distibutor cap. So he goes to the local Subie dealer, and they tell him $175 for a cap, do to the coil being expensive. All I can imagine is the ignition coil, which you would not need , just a distibutor cap which is normall like $10.

so what am I missing here? someone help out? besides the wires and plugs, do I need something thatis differnt on a Subie or a boxxer engine from every other car I have worked on?

thanks

The 99 RS does not have a distributer cap. It's a distributorless ignition. They are trying to sell him the coil pack because that's the only other thing they must think he means. You only need plugs, maybe wires if they are bad (more likely not though). I'd do the fuel filter and air filter. Also check the ignition wire connections up at the coil pack, they seem to get corroded. A good dose of dilectric grease there helps.

Have a look here for the plugs change out:

yes peaty is right you have no cap just a 4 wire coilpack which shouldnt be bad for another 15 years... wire can possably be bad depending on the mileage and condition if the car has over 50,000 id recomend new ones but they will last over 100,000 but not properly they brakedown etc etc ..
