Here is a Spline Drive lug compared to a stock lug:
http://www.oakos.com/Merchant2/graphics/00000001/SplineLug.jpg

Here is the difference between the Spline Drive installation tool and a 19mm socket:
The socket is 25.5mm in diameter and the install tool is only 20mm which allows it to fit into small lug recesses found on some wheels.

Are the black McGard Splindrives going to be $69.95 as well. Also, are they 20 splinedrive lug nuts and no locks or 16 splinedrive lug nuts and 4 locks?? Let me know. Pics will help too. If they include the locks, I got dibs on one set. Let me know when they come in and I will order them. Thanx.

The spline drive lug socket essentially acts as a "functional key" as well as adapter to be able to put them on and take them off. All 20 in the set would be the same. Yes, I know, they also make "key" lug nuts, where you have 4 that are the normal type, and one that also requires the "key" to be able to get it off. I'm using these to secure my Fikse wheels onto my WRX, and I figure for most intents and purposes, the fact that you have to use their special adapter to take the lug nuts off, will deter most wheel stealing thieves. Of course, having a locking nut is certainly an additional layer of security. I just didn't do them because I wanted all 5 of my lug nuts (at each wheel) to look the same. I'm using the blue tipped ones, which are a fun match to my WR Blue Pearl WRX. I really like the McGard SplineDrive lug nuts.

Rally Punx, The black lug set will be $79.95. These kits don't include seperate locks but like Goodfinder said the spline drive lugs themselves are quite a deterrant.
Here is a picture of one lug and the socket:

Goodfinder, Thanks for sharing your experience with the Mcgards. :)

I'll probably be in for a set in black, I need some new lugs before spring, and have heard nothing but good things about these. Just to confirm: The spline drive lugs will be at least as durable as regular, six-sided lugs? Will they survive for a few years even if I change wheels 20 times a year? I had a bad experience with a product from a different manufacturer, so I'm somewhat paranoid and want to be very sure that I buy the right lugs this time.

Would it be possible to get an extra socket? I sometimes loose stuff. :o

OAKOS Automotive
12-23-2002, 06:30 PM
The black lugs just arrived earlier today.

TheWRX,
Yes, the durability of these lugs should be equal to or greater than that of the stock lugs. I have never heard of anyone having any problems with McGard lugs, they are simply a very high quality product. I don't have any extra keys in stock but I will order some with the next order.

I just purchased Rota sub zero's in bronze, what color lug nuts should I buy; I'm assuming bronze, do the mcgards come in bronze?

OAKOS Automotive
12-26-2002, 11:06 PM
The McGards are only available in chrome or black. Ultimately color combinations should be chosen by the car owner based on what they think looks best. In my opinion, I think black lugs look good on bronze wheels.

slprwrx, Rays Engineering may make some lugs in bronze, I am not entirely sure though.

blackbok, Thank you very much for your order. You lugs will be in UPS's hands around lunchtime today. UPS's website estimates the delivery date to be January 6th. I bet you will see it late next week though. I will send you a shipment confirmtion email after it has shipped.

dave- do those spline lugs fit the SSR competition wheels?

OAKOS Automotive
12-28-2002, 10:39 PM
These lugs should work with pretty much any wheel for our cars. The seats are 60° just like the OE lugs. Also, the special spline drive socket that comes with them is much more slender than a 19mm socket which allows them to be installed on wheels with thin lug recesses.

I was wondering which would be safer in city with high theft rates for wheels

-kyokugen open/close lugs
-mcgard spline drive
-mcgard cone seats

just wondering which would be more effective, and also if you stock the cone seats. Need to buy looks definatly in the next week or so.
thanks

I will be looking into the lock sets and lugs / locks combos next week. I don't have any pricing yet on these products but I will let you guys know as soon as I find out.

maaw,
I think that any one of those would provide pretty good theft resistance. The chance of a thief running around with a spline drive lug socket is probably pretty slim. For extra protection though the McGard locks could be used in combination with the Spline Drive lugs. Like I mentioned above I will be getting more details, including pricing, next week for the locks and lugs/locks combos.

OAKOS Automotive
02-12-2003, 08:06 PM
These lugs are made from steel. As to specifically what type of alloy they are actually made from McGard has this to say in their catalog:

"We use only restricted chemistry steel for our fully machined lug nuts. This steel is made in the United States, specifically for McGard. Our special standards insure the strutural integrity of each and every McGard lug nut."

They also explain how each lug is through-hardened (as opposed to case hardened) and receives three layers of nickel plating and then one layer of chrome or black chrome plating.

I just got my set. They are nice. I esp like the feature of the turnable contact point or rim of the lug. In other words, it like they added a ball bearing circle at the begining of the lug that helps when puting on the lugs. I like this as i won't scratch up the wheels were the lugs touch.

I cant wait to put them on in the spring time.

Thanks again for the quick service.

OAKOS Automotive
02-27-2003, 01:55 PM
Thanks a lot for your compliments. It feels really great to hear them. :)

Our product lineup isn't as large as I would like it to be either. I am continuously working hard on developing our inventory as large and as quickly as possible. I prefer to not offer parts that I don't have in stock because that often leads to customer service problems. Having parts drop shipped from a third party and trying to order parts on an as-needed basis, in my opinion, is a recipe for a customer service disaster. I have waited as long as four months for parts to get here before, I would really hate to accept an order for something that we don't have in stock and have a customer wait forever to get the parts.

We have new parts trickling in all the time and I have a feeling that come spring time we will have even more exciting new products. ;)

Thanks again! :)

Oops, I forgot to post that info. The chrome "Tuner" lock kit is $34.95. I didn't talk to my normal contact there and the guy I was talking to sounded new or something and couldn't find a price for the black locks. I'm guessing it's about $5 more. He made it sound like availability of the lock kits was very limited but he also sounded a bit confused.

Hi Dave!
Got a Q:
Are you still have Denso Irridium spark plug, for stock WRX?
What is better IK20 or IK22?
Cost for Spark Plug & shipping to 11224?
Visa or MC will be OK?
Thanks Mike.

OAKOS Automotive
03-07-2003, 11:23 AM
Mike,
We still have both the IK20's and IK22's in stock. The IK20 is the same heat range as the stock plugs and the IK22 is one range colder. The colder plug is good for a modified WRX running increased boost pressure. The stock heat range plug is a good direct replacement for the OE plugs on a stock or mildly modified WRX. The price for either set is $48 + $2 shipping anywhere in the US & PR. We accept Visa, Mastercard, AMEX, or PayPal. If you would like to order by credit card you can do so on our website or you can give me a call. The number here is 248.969.2207. If you would like to order with PayPal you can send payment to: sales@oakos.com.

I talked to my main McGard guy today. I confirmed that the price I gave you yesterday ($34.95) is accurate and I went ahead and ordered twenty sets, 10 black and 10 chrome. He said that they are not in stock there but he will get them to me as soon as possible, he couldn't elaborate further on exactly when I can expect them so hopefully it won't take too long. I will let you know as soon as they arrive. :) Thanks!

Tech question about these lugs: Anyone know the correct torque you're supposed to use with these guys? I had some tuner lugs once that had to be destroyed to get them off cuz some numb nut at the tire patching place overtorqued them.

thanks

The McGard literature that I have here doesn't say anything about torque specs or that they would be any different than the OE recommend spec. I recommend tightening them to the factory specification of 65.7 ft/lbs.

Just a couple quick notes about these lugs from personal experience. They work great, look cool, and the rotating seat design avoids scraping up the lug seats of the wheels. Since there are more contact points between the lug and wrench they are less likely to strip. McGard is also a company that stands behind their products. I had a wheel shop torque one so hard that it cracked the lug (and stripped my wheel stud). I sent it to McGard and they had a free replacement to me in a week.

Just my $.02.

Just wanted to say that I got my lugnuts and wheel locks last week and used them to mount my new SSR's. Great service and fast shipping. :D

UPS just dropped off a bunch more of the black lock kits. They were running low, but now we have a bunch of them in stock. :)

Do you guys have any of the McGard Spline Drive Lug/Lock Set, Black MCG65554BK in stock??

Does it consist of 16 Regular lugs & 4 Lock lugs??

Let me know....will purchase asap if in stock.

I am not exactly sure when we will be getting more of the 65554BK's in stock. We are currently between McGard suppliers, but I am working hard to establish a new relationship with a new (and hopefully better) distributor. I will update this ad when we get a fresh shipment of the lugs. :)

I'm in on the next shipment.
The $45 budget ones are tempting cuz of the availability and price... anybody have experience with them?

jarelee, I just realized that I didn't answer one of your questions. The lug & lock kit contains: 16 Spline Drive lugs, 4 Locks, 1 Spline Drive Installation Tool, 1 Lock Key, 4 chrome valve stems, and 1 storage pouch for the key and tool.

Jae, I'll update this post as soon as we get a fresh supply of these lugs. The $45 Muteki lugs are a good, less expensive alternative. We have sold quite a few sets and everyone seems pretty happy with them, no one has reported any problems or dislikes.

Oakos, I'm sorry, but today I purchased the lugs/locks/stems/tools/keys from summitracing.com for $84.95 + $8.45ship. I have less then 2/32 tread on my current tires and need to put my new rims/tires on immediately (sliding around corners, no matter how slow I go!)

I have passed the word onto my local friends that you have the black splines in stock...I've been buggin everybody about them and it's nice to know u have them for cheap. Thanx

Just a brief unsolicited note to say I ordered and received a black lug & lock kit from Oakos a little while back, and finally got around to using them to mount my OZ Superleggeras last month. I'm very happy with the product and Oakos' responsiveness. Thumbs up to this vendor!

Thanks,
Ed

Oakos Automotive, I recommended my bro to you for lugs as he doesn't need the locks, just lugs. He should be giving you a call soon.

Is the price for the black spline drives still current? If so Im gonna order a set. Thanks in advance.

Azjon, Thanks a lot for your order. We don't even have any of the lug sets in stock right now so we aren't currently offering any combo deals. Your locks are all packed up and waiting for UPS to come pick them up. :D

Jae, Thanks a lot for the referral! :)

Rich, The price is still current, but the lugs are all sold out right now. I have been having a heck of a time getting more of these things, but the wait may be worth it because the prices for the lugs should be a little lower when we finally get them back in stock.
