View Full Version : Wheres all the GC8's
geronimo66 12-28-2002, 09:04 PM Man since the WRX it seems that the old school has died. This is making me like the GC8 body even more since on thing that I like about a Subaru is not seeing one on every corner.
I think the WRX is getting very mainstream.... I see a heck of a lot more than RS's
Save the old school....
liigod 12-28-2002, 10:19 PM <--- has gc8 and doesnt want a wrx
WagonMonster 12-28-2002, 10:23 PM All the GC8's are in Japan and Europe ;)
Oh wait, you must mean GC6's and GM6's
My bad :p

Don't forget those who wanted a WRX but, for whatever reason, got the GC8 instead.
That's what I did when I found out that insurance would've cost me my first born. :eek:
geronimo66 12-28-2002, 11:00 PM Don't get me wrong I think the WRX is GREAT.. and perhaps if I had more green i'd have one to.
But I find myself in a place to to a complete STI swap in a nice 2000 L I am supposed to pick up this week.
Its just, that in the last week of searching this board and looking for parts for my up comming sti comversion I have found tons of things for the WRX, and very little for the older cars.
And it seems that more and more post are from WRX owners and fewer Gc8 people.
:( save the old school!!!
NC2.5RS 12-28-2002, 11:54 PM We're here, you just gotta look for us, we hide in the shadows.

GDBs and GDAs
DuoMaxwell 12-29-2002, 12:20 AM I am GC8 LOL but I think I will keep my butt here in Japan.
geronimo66 12-29-2002, 12:45 AM their you all are, i've been looking for you....
I have so many questions on my impending modifications. I should have my 2000 L this week.
First on my list is a front end conversion from Primitive. Though they don't have hoods. I am still debating weather to go CF or aluminium or OEM RS.
Second is a nice set of street friendly springs, struts, and sway bars.
Third is me taking the car to Lachute.
Okay GC8 people give me some answers :D

powelldl 12-29-2002, 03:45 AM im a not true gc8 but its good enough for me. and i cant smoke any wrx's except for the totalled ones.
dugrant153 12-29-2002, 04:02 AM What does the GC8 look like? well... I know what it looks like, but I think the old school L (or TS) up here in Canada has a different front fender.
If the GC8 front is the front end with the huge foglight things up front, then the 1998 L in Canada doesn't have the GC8 front end (something I adore very much *drool*)

G=Impreza
C=Sedan (1993-2001)
8=Turbo 2.0L
There were never any GC8s officially sold anywhere in North America. The closest thing we got was the GC6, which is the 2.5rs; which in Canada doesn't have the ver.5 front bumper and is even further from the GC8.
But GF4 is where its at...aww yeah.

GC6 = 2.5 RS??? I'm not sure about that, my reference book shows
G=Impreza
C=Sedan (1993-2001)
6=1.8 4WD
Since my reference book comes from Australia, maybe these are Australian codes, but I don't think so, since they work for Japanese cars also.
WRSport 12-29-2002, 06:00 PM Well my GM6 is right here.
Keith99RS 12-29-2002, 06:46 PM GC8 is more or less used to describe the body style and indicate old school Imprezas so you don't have to keep typing which year and body style the car is, so ease up a bit. Sheesh:rolleyes: Nobody here is posting GC8 thinking they have an old school WRX. Picky picky picky:o
NimrodBoz 12-29-2002, 08:01 PM i love the GC8! i really wish subaru would have kept the (alas, useless) scoop and vents in the 2.5 RS as well as the higher wing. the new age 2.5RS looks like crap to me. i dont think you can beat the slant eyes, vented and scooped 2.5rs when it comes down to the bucks.
codemunky 12-29-2002, 08:12 PM GC8 - Pure to the core!!!
I don't think I want the new sti.

Your book is pretty close. North America's Chassis codes are slightly different than the rest of the worlds. Although our chassis is closest to Japan & Europe's GC8 (everything except the motor). The true chassis code for the North American Impreza's are as follows*:
1998-2001 Impreza 2.5RS Coupes: GM6
G=Impreza
M=Impreza Coupe 1995-2001
6=2500cc AWD 1996-2001
2000-2001 Impreza 2.5RS Sedan, 1993-1995 Impreza L Sedan: GC6
G=Impreza
C=Impreza Sedan 1995-2001
6=2500cc AWD 1996-2001 & 2200cc FWD/AWD 1993-1995
1995-2001 Impreza L Sedans: GC2, GC4 & GC6
G=Impreza
C=Impreza Sedan
2=1800cc FWD/AWD 1995-1997
4=2200cc AWD 1996-2001
6=2200cc FWD/AWD 1993-1995
1995-2001 Impreza L Coupes: GM2, GM4 & GM6
G=Impreza
M=Impreza Coupe 1995-2001
2=1800cc FWD/AWD 1995-1997
4=2200cc AWD 1996-2001
6=2200cc FWD/AWD 1993-1995
1993-1995 Impreza Wagon: GF6
G=Impreza
F=Impreza Sport Wagon
6=2200cc FWD/AWD 1993-1995
1996-2001 Impreza Wagon: GF4
G=Impreza
C=Impreza Sport Wagon
4=2200cc AWD 1996-2001
If the 2.5RS had been sold in Europe it would have most likely been designated something like GC9 because of its engine size.
Japan & Europe Chassis Codes**:
GC1 = 1.5L
GC4 = 1.6L
GC6 = 1.8L
GC8 = 2.0L Turbo
* - As described in Subaru of America's published document: "Parts Quick Reference Guide 1985-2002".
** - As described in Haynes Publishing's "You & Your Subaru Impreza Turbo".

aliengti 12-23-2003, 10:11 PM Hey how hard was the swap? and what did that run you?
Did you get a shop to do it or did you perform the swap yourself?
Thanks
CrazyMike13 12-24-2003, 02:10 AM I only bought my "GM6" a couple months ago without even considering a new ugly bugeyed WRX. I went to the effort of hiring a broker on the other side of the country to hunt down the best one he can find in the only color I would let him get. I haven't regretted it since. Only 4 in my entire city. There are more ferrari's out here! I love my prestigious GC8 body style. I get looks everywhere I go and I am also one of those people that can walk away from my parking spot, stare and say, "Damn, that is one sweet arsed ride." 2-doors for life!

Matthew
CrazyMike13 12-27-2003, 05:44 PM About how much is a swap like that? Engine and all. Just curious.
bluimpreza00 12-29-2003, 10:48 AM Well it all depends on where you buy your motor at.
I have found that a lot of people just buy wrecked WRX and use the motor, brakes, seats, steering wheel, sway bars and have a extra tranny etc. for about $2500 and sale the other parts that are not damaged.
OR
You can buy the motor, tranny for about 3-5K's and then have about 50-60 hrs in labor. I know that 40 of those hours are for wiring alone.
Hope this info helps, if you have anymore ?'s let me know

Haha. I get the SAME thing. They always assume you've done ground effects, foglights, etc, etc, but it's ALL stock! (except for the V6 wing of course, but it's still a "subaru" part as opposed to an aftermarket thing. I was getting that reaction when I still had my RS wing anyways.) I love it!
SubaruImpreza_power 01-07-2004, 04:46 PM I got your GC2 right here lol FWD and all :lol:
I would so like to find a Muddy water hole and run right into it I'm so tired of the birds Shatting on my car :furious: and having to go wash it.. It's time to get dirty!
bluimpreza00 01-07-2004, 04:58 PM I get the same kind of looks.
When I first had my 1st RS (2000) everybody wanted to know what kind of car it was and what I had done to it. I just told them put gas and oil in it.
A lot of people thought that it was a Honda? I should have beat them down for that.
Im going to miss the RS when mine sales.
