View Full Version : Short-shifter: does it make you accelerate faster?

I'm thinking about getting a short shifter, either the Subaru stock or kartboy. Do you guys think it makes you accelerate faster by shifting faster, or does it not really help that much? Thanks.

Yeah, it shaves a good couple ounces:rolleyes:

...It gives you shorter throw, ergo quicker shifts, it matters, but it's not going to get you another tenth since you live your life a quarter mile at a time.

more functional for autox, road racing, etc. type stuff where you shift more

It's a "feel" mod. Not a "performance" mod.

it is actually a performance mod, you shift quicker, and your car looses momentum during shifts, quicker shifts= less momentum loss, equals faster overall accelerations. but it is more a feel mod than perf.

is a short throw shifter harder on the synchros?

The only reason why a person will shift faster with a SS than a OEM is this:

He or she has a slow arm.

Whether the driver can get the shifter from one position to another faster is somewhat moot due to the fact that the engine hasn't slowed down enough to match the particular gear speed. Those speed differences are hard on the transmission, especially when the driver shifts hard.

The only way to make your car shift faster is by changing the trasmision fluid, and even then it's not really gonna help anything like your 1/4 mile time. The Syncros in your gearbox have to spool up to match drivetrain speed to engine speed. Whether you have an SS or not is irelivent. If you want your syncros to match faster than change your tranny fluid. Short Throws are as stated above a "feel" mod, they make the shift slightly harder to make because of less leverage but give a better feel of where you are and how you're shifting. Any idiot will still be able to drive it, it's not like it becomes hard to get into gear just "knotchier", feels more mechanical, makes me and the car closer to one unit:rolleyes:
:p
Get the shifter bushings too if you really want a better feeling shifter (they won't make your shifting faster either though).

edit: oh I forgot to mention that if you do change your tranny fluid to get the syncros to match faster there is increased wear and tear on the syncros, prob not too damaging just want people to be aware.

0-60 time before short shifter 6.1 sec

0-60 time after short shifter 5.1 sec

0-60 time after STI shift knob 3.8 sec

If I do 0-60 as quickly as possible, I can actually turn back the clock, like a little time machine! Because I have:

STi/SPT SS, Momo knob, STi tranny mount, Kartboy bushing & Red Line 75w90NS gear oil.

0-60 minus 2.5sec

I would think a short shifter when combined with a lightened flywheel could have an effect, on the shift times.

the flywheel is what makes the difference. (a lighter one) allows the RPMs to drop to the proper shifting range quicker. A short-throw has no effect on shifting speed. If you doubt that, ask my poor beaten down synchros ;)

I miss less shifts with a shortshifter. That makes me faster then, no?

After I eat the candy that comes with the Kartboy shifter, I accelerate a LOT faster. 4flat 40! When I don't have candy you can time my 40 with a calendar

Yes a lightened flywheel is another mod that will reduce shift times. However in the hands of some it is quite possible that it could INCREASE shift times ;) . Sometimes I wonder though why people what to reduce their shift times so badly. It's really not a performance thing. Now if you say I want a lightened flywheel because it's is less rotational mass, hence less parasitic loss, and it will help increase my acceleration, well that I can understand:D
I think that people think it will help their 1/4 mi times if they shift faster when infact they should just change their ratios or get a new tranny to just get rid of a shift.

Shift times are virtually irrelivent unless you suck:D

I don't know about that.. shift times do help and not for drag racing (which I dont do). But some of the rally courses I have been on there are some turns where I don't feel like I have time to wait around for the rev drop. Now I may suck but some of these courses get pretty hectic particularly while you are shifting in mid drift around a narrwoing turn and need to get power going to the wheels again to pull you out ;) . Also doesn't getting the turbo back on spool quicker reduce the amount that is lost between shifts (while BOV is working at keeping stuff available). Not sure on the last point but my understanding of what a BOV is for (the stock one that is) and what happens betweens shifts makes that seem likely.. ?

I dare anyone here to drive a outback sport or old L with the stock shifter, then go drive a car with the shortshifter back to back and tell me you dont enjoy the shorter throw...

less mis-shifts was key for me...
otherwise the stock shifter will be just as
fast. i take my time when i shift even during
a spirited run, so i dont think the synchros
are over used by the ss. smoothness is
faster than just quickness with errors.

 Shifting mid drift that sounds like a throttle off oversteer accident waiting to happen;)

I notice a significant drop in E.T. when I don't have an extra large pizza before I race.

And if you want faster shifts, just start doing tweak like this guy!!
