View Full Version : Just In: Denso Iridium Spark Plugs!

OAKOS Automotive
01-06-2003, 04:15 PM
These plugs are a direct replacement for the OE plugs. The IK20's are the same heat range as the stock '02+ plugs & the IK22's are one heat range colder.
These plugs are also good for most '90-'01 Subarus, please see Denso's application guide (http://www.densoiridium.com/findmypart.php) to find the part for your specific year & engine.

Colder plugs are good for modified WRX's that are running increased boost pressure. These are also good for most RS-T's that require colder plugs.

Denso Iridium Spark Plugs (4), Stock Heat Range or One Range Colder (http://www.oakos.com/Merchant2/merchant.mv?Screen=PROD&Product_Code=DENIK) - $48 + $2 Shipping
99% of the orders placed before 3PM EST M-F ship the same day!

What's the difference between the IK22 and IK20 Densos? I saw another vendor selling the IK20s for the WRX? I'm thinking about ordering some from you, but I just want to make sure they are the right ones for the WRX.
Thanks,

ik22 are colder heat range plugs than ik20 ..

taken from denso site:

HEAT RANGE
The ability of a plug to dissipate heat from the combustion chamber to the cylinder head.

The heat range of a spark plug primarily depends on the length of the insulator nose.

Choosing the correct heat range is very important. Standard vehicles should use the heat range specified by the manufacturer. If your vehicle is not set to standard specifications you may need to change to a spark plug with a different heat range.

Spark Plug temperatures must remain between
450°C-900°C. Cooler temperatures won’t allow the plug to ‘self-clean’ by burning off carbon or oil deposits. This will lead to misfiring and poor acceleration. Hotter temperatures will cause overheating of the plug resulting in power loss, detonation, pre-ignition and possible engine damage.

Heat range numbering systems are different between plug brands. On a DENSO plug the lower the number, the hotter the plug so the higher the number, the colder the plug. Other Japanese companies use the same system, but European or United States companies use a numbering system that reads in the opposite way.

these plugs are what i am putting in when it comes time to get new plugs ..

$48 is a good price .. i think HKS sells these rebranded for $23 each!!

I am logged in under my personal UN because I am having some slight problems with my Internet connection.

Pete,
Like ronaldwrx said these are one heat range colder than the OE plugs. The IK20's are an equivilant heat range to the stock NGK plugs.

Kevin,
I am not sure which plugs are recommended for a turbo'd 2.5. I will look into it further.

ronaldwrx,
Thanks for answering that for me. :)

WRXGuyInTulsa,
I wouldn't count on 7 tenths. The plugs they replaced in that test must have been in pretty poor shape to degrade performance to that degree.

HongKongBeef, Subaru's recommended interval for the EJ20T is 60k miles. This is assuming the vehicle is otherwise stock though.

WRXGuyInTulsa, I figured as much. :) I was just making sure.

Latinskllz, I haven't found any info yet on the EJ25 plugs. I will keep looking though.

Anyone have gap specs on these plugs?
And can you gap these plugs like the regular ones, or is there something special you have to do?

Thanks

ronaldwrx

from the Denso Iridium FAQ (http://www.densoiridium.com/faq.php)

Q. Do I need to set the gap?

A. Generally, no. The DENSO Iridium Power plug comes pre-set with a protective sleeve over the firing end, to protect the gap from accidental alteration. DENSO Iridium Power’s ultra-efficient firing power compensates for normally recommended gap settings that are smaller than the pre-set value. In the cases of vehicle modifications (nitrous, turbo-chargers, super-chargers, high power ignition systems, etc.), some adjustments may be desired. Or, if you prefer to remain consistent with factory specifications, you may adjust. However, please be careful not to place any stress on the fine center electrode during adjustment. You could accidentally break off the very hard, and therefore brittle, tip.

not sure if this helps .. good luck!

ron

OAKOS Automotive
01-12-2003, 02:19 PM
Frank,

Thanks a lot for your order. Your plugs will be sent out at lunch time tomorrow.

Like Ron posted (thanks Ron! :)) you shouldn't need to adjust the gap of the plug. If you feel that your application warrants a gap adjustment here is another excerpt from the Denso FAQ regarding adjustment:

Q. How do I gap Iridium plugs
A. Before attempting to gap any DENSO Iridium Power spark plug, please review the specification chart to see the factory-preset gap. In most cases your Iridium Power plugs do not need to be gapped. Even with small variations in the factory set gap the ultra-efficient firing power design will compensate for those small variations. Should you decide to re-gap your Iridium Power plug, use extreme caution as improper gapping may damage or destroy the Iridium center electrode or porcelain center. To increase the gap size: Step 1 Use needle nose pliers or spark plug gapping tool to bend the ground strap up to the desired height. DO NOT LET THE PLIERS OR GAPPING TOOL TOUCH THE IRIDIUM CENTER ELECTRODE OR PORCELAIN. Step 2 Re-check the gap with a calibrated gapping tool. To decrease the gap size: Step 1 Use the same method as above, however bend the ground strap down to the desired height. DO NOT LET THE PLIERS OR GAPPING TOOL TOUCH THE IRIDIUM CENTER ELECTRODE OR PORCELAIN. Step 2 Re-check the gap with a calibrated gapping tool. WARNING: Failure to follow these directions may permanently damage the spark plug. Note: Never use a round gapping tool to check the gap or to increase or decrease the gap setting.

But what is the recommended gap for a WRX?

OAKOS Automotive
01-16-2003, 03:16 PM
The factory service manual states that the gap for the WRX plugs should be 0.7-0.8mm (0.028-0.031").

The Denso Iridium IK22 plugs come gapped at 0.8mm. The gap shouldn't require any adjustment.

Some info for people
Iridiums are the best plug they are way better than platinums or split fire types.

2.5lt motors in the US come with standard copper Champion plugs these would be great help for them.

WRX motors come with NKG Rs they are just like the Denso Iridiums, no need to replace them untill even 100,000 miles some say Subaru says inspect and posible replace at 60,000.

The only need for new plugs in a WRX is if you are changing heat ranges witch helps greatlly with modded cars with more boost.

I got these for my car at 30,000 miles and didn't need them the stock ones looked brand new.

This are a great price on these plugs I paid $18 a piece.

According to http://www.densoiridium.com the stock equivilant iridium plug for the 2.5RS engine is a IK20 which just happens to be the same plug and heat range that the EJ20T uses. So these plugs (IK22) would be one range colder than the stock plugs in your engine. I am not exactly sure which plugs would be best suited to your application but I will be ordering more soon so if you want something that we don't have I can proably order it for you. Thanks a lot! :)

Are these plugs better, or the same, as the NGKvx Platinum BKR7EVX-11. That the Vishnu (Shiv) kit uses?

Which one's are better? They both are a colder plug than stock.

D:D

OAKOS Automotive
01-22-2003, 07:08 PM
I haven't seen the NGK iridiums first hand but I doubt there is much, if any, difference between the two brands. I have even heard a rumor somewhere that the NGK and Denso plugs are of the same manufacture, I can't confirm that however. Performance wise there would be virtually no difference between equivilant NGK or Denso plugs.

I looked into what plugs are best for the WRX - What i learned from Subaru directly (Master dealer Tech) .....NGK is the recommended plug and other tend to not run right?....Of course i do not know this for sure?....I have bought the KGK Iridium thinking that they could be installed in like 10 minutes:mad: But of course this process is very involved - No disrespect intended for the vendor fo this just my worthless 2 cents:devil:

jwrx, Did you buy the plugs from me? If you are unhappy with them for any reason I would be happy to give you a full refund. :)

That "Master Dealer Tech" doesn't sound very knowledgeable. He is correct that NGK supplies the OE plugs but to say that a plug won't run right because it is a different brand is pretty ignorant.

-Dave

Some dealers just prefer OEM stuff because they are working for them.

I have had dealers tell me they used to be into performance stuff and as soon they worked for the dealer they learned their OEM stuff was better  .

Never seen any problems from this forum about using the Denso sparkplugs. I prefer to believe the people on this forum more than some "techs". The tech's may never touch the Denso's very often because most people would have to buy them themselves and then take it to the dealer and have them install it.

Just to pitch in.

$50 shipped is A GOOD deal. Those suckers are EXPENCIVE. From what i gathered mostly cuz it is extremely hard to work with Iridium.

Iridim is NOT anything like Platinum. Platinum plugs are for longgggggg life. NOT performance. It is so cuz platinum sugz as electroconductor and thus does not make super hot spark and that saves the plug.

Now, i had installed set on my MY01 (IK20 is what you need to order if u have EJ25 motor). I did it together with grounding kit. And i gotta tell ya - It is really nice. Super smooth. More power across entire powerband. Probably not much power gain as much as some power "Found". Know what i mean?

guess it all comes down to - If u want GOOD stuff for your car AND can afford it then get them. You surely will be happy.

Good luck.

OAKOS Automotive
08-14-2003, 12:29 PM
25PSI,
Thanks a lot for your input and review. Part of the high cost is due to the fact that Iridium has such a high melting point that conventional welding of the electrode wasn't going to work so Denso developed and patented a new 360° laser welding process.

http://www.densoiridium.com/images/laserwelding.jpg

Ziglabeu,
I'm sure your stock plugs are just fine for now, I'd recommend sticking with those for a while. BTW, do you know the PN for the factory plugs?

Just ordered the IK22's.

The site said something about my shipping address and I'll have to be contacted. I don't know what's wrong, I always get everything shipped to my workplace. Let me know what's going on, the address is good though.

Ziglabeu,

I'll cross reference that number to see what the equivilant Denso plug would be.

dj_noose,

Thanks a lot for your order! I'll let you know tomorrow when your plugs have been shipped. :)

The message you saw when checking out on the website is normal. This happens on any product that is free shipping or a product that has the shipping cost included in the price (like the spark plugs and also the wheels). The shipping weight for the product must be assigned as 0lbs. otherwise you would be charged again for shipping. Having the product weight assigned as 0lbs creates the message "Unable To Calculate Shipping Cost" because any shipping rate x 0lbs equals zero. I am working on a way to make it less confusing, but in the mean time there is a small notice on the bottom of that particular screen that explains the message.

Denso's site shows that the IK20's do not come gapped to the WRX's spec. They are not pre-gapped to the correct size for it. Be careful all.

OAKOS Automotive
10-18-2003, 12:20 PM
Thanks for pointing that out. The IK22's however are pregapped within sped for the WRX. There is also instructions on Denso's site that show the proper procedure for gapping an iridium plug.

Sent money for the IK22's. What is the pre gap they are set to? Also I have always gapped iridiums just like other plugs where are the instructions of the website could not find them?
Link would be great!:D

OAKOS Automotive

Rod, I'm glad to hear that they made it there quickly and safely. :)

insanesuby, thanks a lot for your order! The IK22's come pregapped at .032" (0.8mm).

http://www.densoiridium.com/faq.php

Why are the "IK" series Denso plugs so much more money than the "IT" series? I run the "IT" series in my Lightning and typically pay under $60 shipped for 8 plugs. Both are Irridium. Not meant as a slam, just curious.

insanesuby
10-22-2003, 08:45 PM
Don't know about the IT series but against reg. NGK's they smoothed out the power band nicely. As for more hp I gained 2 but that could of been the cool down period of changing the plugs. Great plugs and VERY GOOD PEOPLE to buy from.

Thanks guys, look forward to ordering from you in the future.

That 0.7 seconds is for a 250 cc 2 stroke motor, not a 2000 cc motor in a 3000 lb car.

Will you feel the difference?...unlikely

OAKOS Automotive
10-30-2003, 12:29 AM
LOL, yeah, .7 tenths is a bit dramatic. I have never made any statement about gaining power from using these plugs. If you read through the thread you will see that these plugs have many advantages over a traditional plug, but making loads of extra horsepower isn't one of them. :)

02M3power,

Not yet, Denso doesn't have a listing yet for the '04 STi and, also, they don't have a cross reference for the ILFR6B NGK plug. I'll post an update as soon as I get any news. :)

atomic, They are probably pretty much the same as the NGK's. I even heard an unsubstantiated rumor that they come right out of the same factory, but I haven't confirmed that. These plugs will definitely work in the WRX. Please let me know if you have any other questions. :)

I i order a set of ik22's, can you pregap them per specification of vehicle?

OAKOS Automotive
01-29-2004, 01:36 PM
ezparts, You shouldn't have any problems with the 22's in a stock WRX just so you don't drive like grandma (somehow I highly doubt that you do :D). A colder plug won't get as hot as the stock plugs and could fowl out if they don't get hot enough to burn off any deposits.

Beam, Thanks a lot for placing another order with us! I'll let you know later today when your parts have been shipped. :)
