I just got my 1998 Impreza 2.5RS back from the dealer. My driver side rear wheel bearing failed for the third time. The last time it was replaced in October 2001, which means it was out of parts warranty. Passenger side bearing, which had also been replaced twice, still lives.
I was all set on replacing the bearing myself. I did not look forward to paying $300 to have this done by the dealer for the third time. I called Subaru customer service number and explained the situation. I wanted to see if they would pick up at least part of the bill. At the very least I was going to try to get a hold of a technical person to get some specific details on the parts and the replacement procedure to do it myself.
The customer service person was very nice and helpful. She immediately indicated that it is a known problem and that Subaru will probably pay for at least 50% of the repair cost. I was asked to fax in the previous two repair bills. I was given a case number and told to give it to my dealer.
I made an appointment with the dealer (Colonial Subaru/VW in Featerville) and explained the situation to them. They were very patient with me -- more than I expected. They promised to diagnose the problem and then to call SOA to determine if they would cover the cost of repair. They did everything they promised and SOA ended up covering 100% of the cost. I was extremely happy to learn that the car was repaired and it would cost me nothing. The whole thing was handled very quickly and professionally. This time, the proper Legacy roller bearing was installed (part #28016AA030.) I hope it will last.
I have been a loyal Subaru customer ever since buying my very first car -- a 1989 Justy 4WD RS. Since then I bought a 1994 Impreza, a 1995 Legacy and a 1998 Impreza. I still have the 1994 Impreza and this 1998 Impreza 2.5RS. I have been a believer when Subaru was bashed by everyone around, including ALL media. I coped with the possibility of SOA going bankrupt in the early 90s. Every time I hear good news about Subaru I get very excited -- I love these cars!
Kudos for Subaru for taking resposibility for their mistakes and for taking care of their customers! I hope the company prospers and continues to build such worderful cars!
2004 WRX STi is a step in the right direction :D
