View Full Version : 2nd Annual East Coast Subaru Shootout date set.
Guys, just letting you know this because I know many people start putting in for time off and vacations at work now.
It will be held Saturday, Sept. 13th at Beaver Springs Dragway located in Central PA(same as last year).
Last year was our first shot at this event and it was a MAJOR success in my opinion. This year we have a few things in the works, not so much with the event itself, but with vendors and such, inlcuding a potentially major sponsor to help with advertising , a lot more prize money, things like that, so it should be good.
More info to follow in the coming months, so check back once in a while in the events section here.

alfriedesq 01-10-2003, 05:22 PM I'll be back next year to try and reach the high 10's - - hopefully with a real STI '04 this time
hotsam 01-10-2003, 05:32 PM I'm there...hopefully I'll do better than 10th place...
Although I do have a timeslip showing I ran a 8.346 @ 510.49MPH...
Damn birds flying in front of the sensor....
evorace1 01-10-2003, 06:46 PM i wish this event was more centrally located for the south and midwest guys.
Imprezd 01-10-2003, 07:25 PM I'm their already... this time I will be in a GC8 :)
EVORACE.. don't let the distance get ya...
Imprezd~
p.s. i am driving about 5 hours to go.. as well.
fastsubie 01-10-2003, 08:29 PM Great Matt! I hope we have a good turnout like last year if not better. I was just watching some of the video I shot from the shootout. I got some good stuff for the archives...

Yeah guys, we have a couple of things in the works to help promote the event a bit more this year and give out more prize money, maybe trophies, something like that. We have a possible major sponsor lined up but have yet to really sit down and talk with them about specifics so I don't want to say much in case it falls through. We learned a bit from last year though.
The location...well, the US is a huge country so naturally it's going to be too far for many but I think there are a TON of Subaru enthusiasts within driving distance of the track( a few hours ) so it works out pretty well. Similar to the DSM Shootout in OH every year.

I saw a guy tag a bird at an Autox in NJ, actually lost control trying to avoid it. He didn't get a re-run, but got out of his car and disposed of the the dead bird. I thought he should get another run myself.
This is really cool. Maybe I can take a ride down and check this out.
Any plans for elimination rounds for the folks here that have no money, but can drive really consistant and not "break out". Might draw a bigger crowd. Just a suggestion. Have a "fastest class" and then normal racing.

motoxphil 01-11-2003, 07:57 PM Matt,

I'm putting the 11sec TurboXS WRX up for sale so I NEED an STI.
Please contact me so we can work out some details about the car and I have some ideas for your event.

There is likely going to be a similar event in the Midwest, aptly named the Midwest Subaru Shootout.
Guys, the structuring of the racing this year is still "under investigation" but we'll come up with something. No one will be left out though.
Phil, sent you an e-mail. Hope you can find it!( I know e-mail is not your best contact).

The guy that was originally planning the MW thing was downshift1 on the board, Dylan. He went to the first East Coast one with a few other guys from the MW. You probably want to get ahold of him to find out where that is going at this point.

p.s. also matt quick question............tranny..............when sti gets here, will it be possible to reasonably upgrade to a sti 6? thanks in advance.
whiterabbit 01-21-2003, 09:23 PM you should check out how the Integra type R's set up their ITR EXPO. They are also holding it at beaver run in April.
whiterabbit, I actually looked at the ITR expo and a few other similar gatherings to see how things are run and each one seems to be after something a bit different. The ITR expo does look like a great event, but to be perfectly honest, a little more formal than what we have in mind. BTW, that's held at Beaver Run, not Beaver Springs Dragway ;)
As Def said, keeping it simple is the goal.

alfriedesq 01-26-2003, 01:16 AM I am so excited that I will prob be there with my STI purchased from W & L - I got my depoist in with them!! Who else would I spend my $$ with ? Any dealer who throws a show like this gets my $$ every time !
It will be interesting to see how the STi's fare against the old school WRX's !
bleuquila 01-26-2003, 10:23 AM Hi! If it's not too much trouble, could someone sort of summarize what happened at the first event? From all accounts it was the *best day ever* but I'm unclear on what a "shootout" actually entails.
For instance, is this something that people with track experience will get more out of, or would it be a good intro for someone like, oh say, me - with no idea what to do at a track, but a keen desire to learn?
thanks :D
First Annual Shootout Thread (http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=244610&highlight=Shootout)
The "Shootout", or more formally the East Coast Subaru Shootout is an all Subaru Day held at Beaver Springs Dragway in Central PA. And while you can basically have an unlimited number of passes down the track, it is more for just a day put aside for all of us Subaru enthusiasts to just chill with each other, check out a ton of different set-ups on a lot of different cars, and just talk Subaru for the day. Sure, there is prize money up for grabs in some different classes, but for the most part is just a bunch of us Subaru guys with the same intrests just hanging out for the day and getting some good racing in at the same time.
A few things made is so great last year. One were the guys that showed up. I talked to almost everyone last year and I mean it when I say everyone was cool as hell. No big heads, no "My car is better then yours" talk, nothing like that. Many people who only knew others by their tag on the then i-club finally got to put faces to the names they see every day. Everyone controlled themselves as well, which, if you've been to a big import race lately, many guys leave their maturity and manners at home. Not the case here.
But probably the biggest excitement maker was the fact that Big Al and TurboXS were going to be racing at the same track on the same day with two totally different set-ups, both going for quickest car there. If you were around last year, you'll know there was absolutely no love loss between Al and TXS, but in the end, both put on an incredible show and showed the highest level of sportsmanship one could ask for. No sore losers OR sore winners.
So, no, someone with more track experience will not get more out of the event. Maybe do better on the track, but will not have more fun then say someone there just to check out everyone's cars and such. It would be a fantastic "intro" for anyone just getting their feet wet in the world of Subaru's as there will be just about any combination there this year that you can think of. And, the wizards at TurboXS will again be there with a ton of product and knowledge for all to enjoy :)
I know there are already some verbal challenges being made between some fast as hell 02-03 WRX owners and future STi owners, not to mention everyone else going.
And there is talk of a big "The Night Before the Shootout" party down at the dealership on Friday night this year for a bit of a Car Show/Meet and Greet/Eat a ton of Pizza and Wings type event ;)
Hope this helps some.

Central PA, Drag racing only, cash prizes for top honors in classes(classes and actual prize money not determined yet) and last year the guys at TurboXS were kind enough to raffle off a few of their products as well.

8Complex 01-27-2003, 12:00 PM Cool... I had a ton of fun last year and will most definitely be showing up this year. :)
Oh, and I'll actually bring my GM6 along to represent this year.
virpacalis 01-27-2003, 08:26 PM Is there any talk of more vendors being at the event?
alfriedesq 01-28-2003, 01:13 AM Also - it was a very very beautiful area - there were green rolling hills and cows - the track is in the middle of no where - hotels were plentiful and cheap - and the guy who ran the track "Beaver Bob" really laid out teh big welcome mat for us - its a great track to visit
Prob by Sept my new STI will not be ready for any serious drag action - BUT - even if its still stock - I'll come down just to make the scene and take a few runs down the track
lastly - after so many days at other tracks sitting around ALL day just to get a few runs in and waiting in long lines while all the detriot iorn oils the track and causes long clean ups - it was VER very cool to have virtually UNLIMITED drag runs - as many as your car could handle in 4 hours - - that alone is worth the price of admittance
My only regret - is next year PLEASE make some XXXL T-shirts - I am so fat that my t-shirt won't fit me anymore after it got washed a few times
PS - i still have my www.beaversprings.com 100 mph club lisence plate on my car - and I'd love to see if my new STI could break into the 100 mph club in 100% stock form
I'm looking forward to visiting W & L to pick up my new STI in June and maybe if they won't void my warranty I'll pay a visit to beaver springs while I'm there to break the STI in the right way and see what it can do - - I also plan to drive my WRX down there while I'm at it to try out a 200 shot of NOS and 30 psi of boost t0o see if that easy street record can fall - and at least have fun blowing up something if i dont!
alfriedesq 01-28-2003, 01:15 AM PS - after seeing how close the TX's stage 4 came to my car in perormance with a much lower cost in mods and obviously much greater driveability - I am hoping that they eventually make a stage 4 kit for the STI - - a stage 4 kit a 50 shot of NOS and the 2.5 L sti would make a potent combo
I'm looking forward to visiting W & L to pick up my new STI in June and maybe if they won't void my warranty
Al, c'mon, you know better then that ;) Sent you a PM.
As for other vendors, there may be other ones there. Last year Z1 Auto and RalliSpec both game me verbal commitments and neither showed up and I have still yet to hear from either one saying why. There were a few other vendors I e-mailed last year about the whole deal, and I think Dave Buschur from Buschur Racing was probably the only one to reply back to say he had other commitments that weekend but wished us all a good time. I'm not crying about it or anything, but if someone, anyone, invites you somewhere, you should at least have the common courtesy to reply back either way. Maybe it's just me :)
I'll be contacting a few other people this year very soon, but to be perfectly honest, the guys at TurboXS more then made up for any other vendors not being there as far as performance stuff goes. But, if any vendors are reading this and want to contact me, drop me an e-mail at nzwrc1@sunlink.net

W&L Subaru Its not cool to just not show up = = Especially when you are a vendor! Both those non-show vendors are very good though and they hopefully will make up for thier bizzare failure to show up - - by showing in in full force this year
I will be there this year. Last year I went to the PSU vs Neb game and had a blast, but it sounds as though I should have been at this. My car is not the fastest nor will it be, but I hope to maybe (if I get a few more mods done) of hitting the low 13's.
Al, would you like to donate any of your parts from your car to a man in need of help? Just a thought. I could give you sob story if you need to hear one just to make it OK? My wife left me (well I actually left her, but whatever) Blah, Blah, Blah...
codean 02-06-2003, 07:15 PM I was one of the chicago guys that came out last year and I hope to make it out this year too. Not sure if I'm going to bring my car though....I always have bad luck and would most likely break something.
Mr.Freeze 02-07-2003, 03:18 PM I too am another Chicagoan that showed up last year - only one that brought an L I believe...although I didn't run it. I may bring it again this year or maybe another goody, we'll see
Last year was mucho fun, but this year should be better, with faster cars and such.
I expect some of you peeps to show up in the Midwest Shootout :D

www.turboxs.com I heard it has SIDE feed injectors and drive by wire - seems like it will need a whole new UTEC approach ! I am busy selling off all the parts from the silver bullet - basically everything has been sold - within three weeks it will be a stock WRX again and maybe ready for a stage 4 and my nos to keep me busy till they release the STI - - BTW with the lancer being pushed back a whole month till mid march and the '03 WRX's selling so poorly I just hope the STI comes out on time in june !!!!!
PS - nathan - no news on your monster - is it in play?
You know whats really amazing about my car - I've been driving it every day since the shootout - all I did was load in a low boost street gas map and I haven't touced the car once since then - i even drive it in the snow - WRX's are very tough little cars !
nmyeti 02-08-2003, 02:50 PM Originally posted by alfriedesq

Al,
I've been spending all my time working on Phil's car, which is a total beast right now even without n2o. I can't even understand how a stock block can live at his power level. More on that in another thread at another date, but let’s say we are very impressed with how some of our new projects are working out.
Anyway, we've been working hard on the hybrid in my car and I expect some pretty interesting results this spring. In any case I’d say we’ve learned quite a bit about these motors, their cylinder heads, and their willingness to rev.
I suspect you are right about needing a whole new UTEC, but when Pete built the board and speced the processor, it was done with easy upgrades in mind.
Drive by wire may lead to some VERY interesting projects, but I am most excited to play with the variable cam timing. I suspect it won't be long before the UTEC is setup to actually take control of this system.
From what we've learned so far, the drive by wire and the cam timing may make for a very interesting launch control system with the utec. We just have to get an STI here and start plugging away.

kaneda3 02-08-2003, 02:57 PM all i want to know is if anyone considered holding an event like this at a road course?
whats it cost to rent out beaversprings?
i dont know would you guys rather have a 1/4mile day
or a road course with possible rallyx ?
alfriedesq 02-09-2003, 01:07 AM Nathan - the AVCS is just an amazing spool up enhancer - the sadest thing about my project is that I was never able to activate the AVCS so far with the big turbo becuase there has been no aftermarket ecu which could operate the avcs so far
Now that all the goodies are going away to new homes - I will await the enjoyment of the 2.5 with the avcs - I can predict right now that sucker is going to hit hard in spool up at highway speeds
Seems like the Utec would woerk just fine on a stock STI leaving the AVCS in by pass mode???
Soon I will be back to a stock block WRX 5 spd also and I'm planning the NOS / VF30 utec mode to enjoy for the spring
all i want to know is if anyone considered holding an event like this at a road course?

Having something like a road course day or rally-x day would be very cool, and I believe there were already a few all-Subaru rally-xs organized by some members. Any event involving a bunch of the same marque guys usually makes for a good day, whatever you are doing.
But the East Coast Subaru Shootout will always be at a drag strip simply because it is very simple, very inexpensive for a beginner, very easy on cars(compared to auto-x or track days) and fun as hell and is as fun for spectators as it is for the racers IMHO. But, as was said from the get-go, this is just an event to hang out and check out everyones' cars, see what combo's they are running, that sort of thing and while you are there, satisfy your curiosity and see what your car will do in the 1/4 mile. Many WRX owners are interested in power(not saying that's the ONLY thing, but near the top of the list for sure), and 1/4 mile "Shootouts" many times bring out the best of the best, as was evident last year. This is a big plus for those interested in deciding what or what not to do to their own cars. In my expereince, track days don't necessarily bring out that type of crowd. Nothing against the road racing guys in the least bit, but for the event atmosphere we were looking for, Beaver Springs fits the bill perfectly.

kaneda3 02-09-2003, 02:40 AM ok thats a good response
so how much is it for people competing
for spectators(my girl)
is this open to all scoobs or just you rex boys?
mike
Although I didn't double check with the track owner this year yet, I'm almost positive it will be the same as last year which was $30 for racers and vendors and spectators are free.
The event is most certainly not just for WRX owners, you got a Subaru, this event is for you :)
Only thing we are against are "outlaw" cars meaning tube-frame cars, Rear wheel drive cars, total fiberglass bodied cars, etc. You must have a Subaru 4cyl(if it came with a 4) with a Subaru tranny -how you mod them is up to you. If you have an "Outlaw" car, you are welcome to bring and run it, but you are not eligible for any prizes from us.

I think this is the way the UTEC will come for the STI when it's first available. I do hope in the future we can actually alter the AVCS system in such a way to further improve the power band of this car. It all depends on what exactly Subaru gives us to play with.
You are really going to like the 2.5. It will spool a turbo the size of your old GT30 like a stock WRX spools a VF30.

kaneda3 02-09-2003, 05:34 PM with a Subaru tranny -
so does this mean dogboxes are out of the running for prizes?
sorry about all the questions but i want to plan for this and even though its still worth my time to come and chill with all the other subaru owners
itll be alot more fun if im allowed to compete
mike
Dog gears are fine as long as it's all within the factory Subaru transmission casing. I just don't like the idea of some top Import racers changing over to Chevy Powerglides and whatnot. Don't know anyone with a Subaru doing it *yet*, just nipping things in the bud.
BTW Mike, I was reading up on your car. Very nice. It will be awesome to have a mega horsepower GC8 car(or GM6 if you want to get technical) to go up against some of the quickest WRXs in the country. Looks like everything was done first rate. Very nice!

kaneda3 02-10-2003, 09:56 PM no thats cool show the pic if you can
im tryin to figure out a way to afford the dog box right now
but either way im gonna try and make the event
if i have a sound tranny ill be droppin it hard and goin for 10's(with a dog i think im capable)
if i dont and its on the wrx gears ill probably be babying the hell out of it
man im poor
mike
Redline8k 02-15-2003, 02:03 AM I also will be returning. I hope to have my car completed by then so I can compete... Looking forward to the drive from chicago.:D

It was great having you guys out from Chicago and hopefully you all can make it back this year.
BTW, I put up a half-ass web page for the shootout where I'll be adding more details about the Shootout(lodging, times, prices, prizes etc.). Just don't laugh, I'm no web designer :)
As of right now, we do not have an Automatic class scheduled for two basic reasons. One is the absolutely dismal turnout of automatics last year(2, maybe 3), and the second reason is that with a bit of work done to them, I really don't believe they are much of a disadvantage vs the 5spd guys. Things could change though so we'll see.
And although prize money has yet to be determined, total will be more then last year for sure and we would like to give money to the top two in each class if possible. Both the turbo and NA classes last year went right down to the wire with the top two guys and they put on a great show, so I feel the 2nd place guys deserve a bit for their efforts as well.
I'll update this thread with details as well, but the web page is there for anyone who cares.

Any media coverage (magazines?)
There were roughly 50 cars there(not everyone racing though) and about 100 people or so.
The event was not advertised anywhere but the i-club so no, no media coverage. That may change this year though.

InfamousDX 02-24-2003, 04:36 AM Damn I am definitely gonna be there. How much is it to participate?? Hopefully I'll be nicely modded come September.
LangstonSubaru 02-24-2003, 11:45 PM You guys gotta plan on staying for the import race on sunday too. Beaver Springs is a great place to race. A nice place to bring the family too. Beaver Bob has toned down his PA banter alot in the last few years. He did tell me last year, that this year we'll probably be racing for trophies, no money, he's tired of giving it all to me. I'd like to see mostly Subarus in the quick 8 for the Sunday race. Of course on Sunday, you have to drive the starting line too, he usually runs a pro style tree ( all ambers flash at once ). If you can cut a .5anything light, you're doing your part on the starting line. I plan on autoX-ing most of the year, but i'll always make time to race at the Beaver! Hope to see you there! Brian
How much is it to participate??
$30 for racers and spectators are free.
I'll get pricing for the Friday Night Street Races(for anyone coming in early for the Shootout that wants to shake the car down a bit) as well as the Import Shootout on Sunday as Brian mentioned.
It's kinda funny because like 5 out of the top 10 Import MPH's are Subarus from the Shootout last year. I heard of few of the local import guys got really bummed because in one afternoon they dropped so far down the Import MPH list :)
BTW, lodging and track info is up on the Shootout Page (http://www.wandlsubaru.com/en_US/f_MiscPage_3.chtml)

virpacalis 02-26-2003, 08:02 PM Thanks for the heads up. It's no longer full.
Gerry 02-26-2003, 08:44 PM I don't care for the rules...What's up with the no one piece noses and no RWD and has to have a subaru tranny in the car..This isn't the IHRA is it?Also the Street Unlimited should be anything goes..Also does " No tube chassis" mean no 4 links are allowed..And am I also out because I will have a ford 9" rear? Please consider changing the rules for unlimited class,Please consider changing the rules.Even though 80% of the car is still a Subaru, it infact is still a Subaru. Also if it is supposed to be a East Coast Subaru Shootout you should change the name to East Coast Subaru Street Shootout. There SHOULD be a big dog class..Thanks Gerry
Gerry, this is somewhat of a touchy matter. But there are a few reasons why we don't have an "Outlaw" class.
One reason is simply because the vast majority of Subaru enthusiasts at the Shootout just aren't going to have much in common with an "outlaw" Impreza. There is a very good chance that if TurboXS or Easy Street or Vishnu or whatever other tuner shows up with a low 10 second car, it will be using many products that those tuners sell to your average WRX enthusiast every day. That is very beneficial to the guys showing up at the Shootout with their street cars. This is not to say that an individual will not be taking home top honors this year, but if he does, chances are there will be "over the counter" performance products on his car as well.
Another reason is that I am a firm believer in "Win on Sunday-Sell on Monday". One-off hybrids are great entertainment, but that's it. Take the boom era of drag racing, say early to mid 60's to late 60's for instance. The major manufacturers sunk tons of money into their drag racing programs because they were racing cars they were selling to the public in the Super Stock class. Later, A/FX(factory experimental) came into the picture with cars havng alterd wheelbases, motor swaps(with motors never intened for the car they were in), and later the funny car was born with fiberglass flip-top front ends and later whole bodies, radically different suspension set-ups, Nitro methane, etc. And what happened? The Manufacturers pulled their major funding for these cars and put it back into the Super Stock classes because although the funny cars were exciting(and dangerous), they served no purpose from a manufacturers' point of view. Having factory racers racing cars you could actually buy off the showroom floor proved to be much more lucrative.
Case in point, compare the percentage of WRX buyers who bought or at least got interested in the car due to Subaru's rally success vs. the percentage of Mustang owners who bought or at least got interested in the car due to John Force's success in NHRA Funny Car. Another case, you would think since STi does Cusco's motor program for their touring RWD Impreza, it would be a bit more advertised with STi, but it serves no real market value for the average STi customer IMHO. While I'm not saying that Works rally cars are simply dressed-up street cars, they appear to be the cars you can buy(aka-marketing). The WRC car is a 2.0 AWD turbocharged Subaru and so is the WRX. WRX owners can relate to the WRC Impreza very easily(even easier back in the Group A days). Ever see an Impreza with OZ P1 wheels : )
As a Subaru dealership, we would much rather see individuals and/or tuners who sell parts to individuals who are building quick street Imprezas get our money then a "one-off" hybrid car. Guys who buy the Impreza because it's an awesome car and enjoy modding it on the weekends with friends and whatnot to make it even better, but still drive it to work every day.We support those guys. As a long-time import drag racing fan, I would sooner watch Sean Glazer, or Jeff Hill run in the single digits in their Talons, which look like any other modded Talon on the road, then see some twin turbo RWD Focus run in the 6s.
Don't get me wrong, it's not that I hate "outlaw" cars, it's just that there is a certain time and place for them. That being said, I reworded the general rules section on the Shootout page a bit to clear up any misunderstandings. If you have an Outlaw car, you are more then welcome to run it at the Shootout, but we will not have a class for you, thus, no prize money. Now, if somebody, anybody, wants to sponsor an "Outlaw" class and put up their own prizes/trophies, whatever, I will gladly put it up on the Shootout page.
So, the classes will remain as is, as will the name of the event. The top class is "Street Unlimited" and I'm sure there will be plenty of big dogs in that class under the current rules this year. If a few "outlaw" Subarus show up and run and the crowd goes crazy over them, then maybe things will change. Hope this helps some.

DocDetroit 02-27-2003, 12:36 AM I like the rules. The only thing I am "iffy" on is mixing guys running nitrous and those not running nitrous. I think there is a world of difference between getting into the 11s on nitrous and getting into the 11s without nitrous.
kaneda3 02-27-2003, 04:30 AM im forced to agree with doc here
I think there is a world of difference between getting into the 11s on nitrous and getting into the 11s without nitrous
I agree as well. But the main problem is that there is only so much money to go around, not to mention the problems that could arise. For instance, a guy brings his car that has nitrous. He is about .5 seconds off of the top guys running, so he says, "well I just won't spray" and runs, say, an 11.40. Meanwhile the top non-nitrous guy has been running 11.50's all day and busting his butt doing so. You don't think eyebrows will be raised when the "yeah but I didn't spray on that run" guy takes home the loot?
I'm just thinking of ways to avoid any major dilemas. It's almost a given that the top car this year will be on nitrous so those with major mods know going in if they aren't the quickest, they don't win, no confusion or room for debate. Do I think the non-nitrous guys with big turbos and whatnot deserve something, personally, yes I do feel they should be reconized for running a great time without the aid of nitrous, but again, the prize money budget only goes so far and I don't want to get to the point of dividing each class to the point where each class is only getting $100 for their efforts.
Not to mention the fact that the absolute sole purpose of this event is not to see who is the absolute quickest and fastest, it's a Subaru get-together where you basically get unlimited runs at a drag strip and hang out with other Subaru guys for the day. I do not want to spoil the event by getting overly serious about what cars have what done and then try to enforce those rules all day long. *I think* the current classes cover the three most represented groups of guys that will show up(and based on last years turnout as well).
Again, if a vendor or tuner shop would like to step up and sponsor a Street Unlimited-No Nitrous class, I would be more then happy to put it up on the web site and go along with their rules. But as I said, the classes we have set are what I think would be the most represented and again, our money only goes so far. This is a zero profit event for us. If we made a boat load of money from it, things would be different, but we make nothing.
Always open to suggestions though. This is YOUR event afterall. But, if we have 100 cars there this year, changing the classes for 4 or 5 people is simply not feasible.

500hpwrxsti 02-27-2003, 08:24 AM I believe the classes pretty fair, NO probs. from this end!!! Keep the good work up Shik look foward to seeing you this year, it will be my first year at the event!!:D
LangstonSubaru 02-27-2003, 10:00 AM Even if there's no class for what you have, bring it anyhow, there's always bragging rights! Then stay for the import race on Sunday, Beaver Bob doesn't give a hoot what you run, as long as it's safe according to IHRA rules. One year there was a 10 second beat up old RX7, it was barely safe and not at all streetable.
Vendor info has been added to the page as well as exact time.
The time is from 10-4 but you can pretty much show up as early as you want to set-up or whatever. But the racing won't start until 10am.

Kevin Thomas 05-14-2003, 02:59 PM Guys,
I'll try to be out this year. I'm am really disappointed that I didn't make it last year and missed all the fun of watching you guys run. I tried to have my wagon ready for the event only to blow a headgasket August 27th and all hell broke loose from there. My car still isn't together 9 months later.
If my wagon isn't together then screw it. I'm rolling up there in my XT6. :D It will be nice to beat on some modern day scoobies with it. :p
Guys, the prize money will be as follows:
Street Unlimited
1st Place-$500
2nd Place-$150
Stock Turbo(excludes STi)
1st Place-$200
2nd Place-$75
Normally Aspirated
1st Place-$50
2nd Place-$30
In addition, we will be raffling off prizes from various vendors throughout the day(no charge for the raffle tickets).
On another note, if you plan on coming, how about dropping me an e-mail to say so, and also let me know if you will be coming to the get-together at our dealership the evening before. I know it will be impossible to get a accurate head count, but just something to give me a general idea. Thanks fellas.

I'm talking with a vendor who may be interested in sponsoring an auto class. I know attendance will be better this year, but quite honestly, last year's auto class was a waste to even have since we had a total of like 2 cars which is why we didn't do one this year and opted to give money to the second place cars in each class instead.

Hey where's vishnu?
Rob, believe it or not Shiv and I talked via e-mail but I don't think many can blame him for not hauling a car or two 3000 miles cross country for the Shootout, although I'm sure his east coast customers would enjoy it. And quite honestly, to have a TurboXS car lined up next to a Vishnu car on a drag strip is something I'm sure everyone would pay to see. I know I would ;)
Hey Matt, what exactly is the agenda for friday.
Jorge, there are a few options for Friday night. The Beaver I'm sure will be having their Friday night street races at the track(and they do have an import class every Friday). That's from like 5:00 till whenever.
But we will also have our meet-n-greet and show Friday evening as well with food and refreshments, WRC vids, etc. probably from like 6:00pm till maybe 9-10pm or so. And for the night owls, there's a decent *club* about 15-20 minutes east of the dealership on rt.11 ;)
There is also a fairly decent mall on rt. 11/15 with a big cinema center inside, and also tons of places to eat along rt 11/15 as well as Pep Boys, Advanced Auto, etc. should you need any last minute stuff, all right outside of Selinsgrove.
We are about 10 minutes east of Selinsgrove right on rt.11(after rt 11 and 15 split). Very easy to get to.
Rui, sent you a PM.

Just updated the Shootout Page (http://www.wandlsubaru.com/en_US/f_MiscPage_3.chtml) with some basic info:
So here is the official schedule of the Shootout:
8:00-gates open(Vendors encouraged to get there around this time if you will need to set up)
9:15-9:45approx.-Race fuel will be available but only during this time frame. Beaver is a small track and the guys that run the tower are usually the ones getting the fuel for drivers as well on club days, so we don't want the racing delayed because there are 12 people waiting in line for fuel at 10am.
10:00-Racing starts
4:00-Shootout is over. Go for pizza with everyone!
Also, here are a few of the track safety guide lines(IHRA track):
Clothing- Long pants and at least a T-shirt that goes to your elbow. No muscle shirts(tank tops)
Safety-Snell 95 approved helmet for all Subarus running 13.99 or quicker. Please do not forget your helmet! It's a total pain when you have to run around asking everyone if you can borrow theirs!
All Subarus running 11.49 and quicker must have a roll cage or you can plan on making only one run for the entire day.
Also, for the automatic guys, we are pretty sure there will be a class for you sponsored by one of the vendors. Just awaiting word from the owner. On another note for the auto guys, I was asked about using a "delayed start" where after the stage bulbs are lit, there is a 5 second wait or so until the tree starts. The start system we'll be using will be the standard "sportsman" tree(which I believe is the same for both NHRA and IHRA tracks) where after the stage bulbs are lit, there is a one second interval inbetween bulbs down to the green light(about 4 seconds total). This is what the vast majority of guys are acustomed to as it is the standard across the country.

Matt I agree with Padre. We want to compete with the 5MT guys, they will stage before we do. We just need a few more seconds on the pre-stage so that we start the process of brake lock and brake torque.

I would think the answer to this would be, 'No'. If I had a stock WRX engine in a Subaru Justy, that wouldn't be fair at all. Heck, I'd probably get kicked off the track on my first run. :D

Kevin is right. Motor swaps are in Unlimited. From the Shootout page: Stock Turbo Class-"and is for 2.0 powered WRXs only"
Ouch !!!! Where is da love - where is da love???? Man you fast mo fo's better make your fast run count !!!!!!!!!
Yeap. IHRA rules, not the tracks. I would like to think any fast "mo fo's" would already know about this and come prepared if they plan on making a day of it. But then again, stranger things have happened :)
Do I need to register? If so how much? Will the racing be bracket racing or just the fastest car?
Nope, just pay at the gates($30 for racers and vendors-free for spectators). Also, just fastest cars of the day, no bracket racing. Run as many times as you want.
Matt can you please find out what is the price for C16 at the track?
From Beaver's site:
GT Plus 100 Octane $4.60 gal.
GT Plus 104 Octane $4.70 gal.
Purple 110 Octane $4.30 gal.
Blue 112 Octane $4.60 gal.
Red 116 Octane $6.90 gal.
99.9% Pure Alcohol $2.25 gal
I will double check though because I don't think all fuels were available last year.
Also, Ultimate Racing( www.ultimate-racing.com ) has come aboard and is the sponsor for the quickest Automatic WRX.
The Ultimate Racing Quick Auto Class
First Prize-$175
2nd Prize-$75

Good idea. :D :D :D If it is cash I will keep to help me pay for the hotel. HAHAHAHAHA
I don`t think that I am a big contender to be on the prize money. I have been talking to Sam at levelten and every time that I call, he is working on 500 - 800 HP WRXs. There is people out there with big HP and upgraded tranny that will kill me at the shootout. I am the only crazy 4eat in Canada, meeting other guys at the shootout it will be a great experience. My goal is to do low 12`s and have lot`s of fun. I want to drive my car back to Toronto, so taking my car to the limits it is not an option.

Regarding Toronto-Subaru-club I don`t think that any guy`s will go down with us, they are more in to Motorsports stuff like autoX and rally stuff. Sometimes I go there post my times and see if anyone want`s go get in to the Dragracing scene but I haver never seen any interest from the members.

While the prize money may go to the person with the fastest e/t, my only concern will be the guy in the next lane and that "win" in my column on the timeslip.
If you want times only, then race by yourself. But if you line up against me, as they say, "let's get ready to rumble!" You may go home with the fastet e/t, but if you can't beat me in a real drag race, well... who goes home with the bragging rights? :)

Really lookin forward to seeing what our subaru shootout will be like, this will be my first year goin to this one, went to DSM Shootout last year and our lil Midwest shootout this year and had a blast. Hopefully I have as much fun here as in ohio ;)
Matt,
I am heading to the track tonight to try and tune and see what the car can do... DO you think that W&L would want to sponsor a FMIC for me??? I would be in your debt forever... hehe (no I am serious)
While I will not be the fastest car there (far from it) I would like to get in the high 12's with my stg4... I will be open to tuning help that day... all are welcome to come and get my car running the best that it can.
I think that I need to get a clutch in this thing before the shootout. Stock one with 35000 miles on it? Not sure if it will hold up... I will see tonight.
chris
Chris, you want a FMIC, we'll get you one at sponsor-like price ;)
Guys, just as an added bonus, I'll just mention quickly that W&L Subaru sponsors the Import 100mph Club at Beaver Springs. The top five import 100mph's at the end of the year recieve nice embroidered jackets and a plaque I believe.
Since we sponsor it, we would like nothing more then to have the top 5 mphs be had by Subarus which is a VERY good posibility considering that last year we had 3 of the top five after the Shootout. So, 5 nice jackets up for grabs for the fast Subes out there. Obviously not all of you will be able to make it back to the awards ceremony at the end of the year, but we'll make sure you get the goods should you be one of the top 5. Check the link to see where you would stand right now :)

Gumpy 08-15-2003, 11:28 PM Matt,
Sounds like alot of people are going to be there. My question is where are you going to put everybody on friday night for the pizza party at your dealership? I have been to your dealership and it is pretty small. With all of the cars on the lot, there will be no room for our cars. I am definately going to be at the shootout along with one other person. We would like to come to the pizza party on friday night, but are concerned with space at the dealership. Any input would be appreciated.

Gumpy 08-16-2003, 01:23 AM Saposat,
I had a WRX. Can't discuss the details, but I am glad it is gone. My father-in-law and many of my friends, who are coming to the shootout, still have subies. I like any performance car regardless of the make, that includes Subies. Anyway, don't you all get your panties in a bunch as I am not bringing the EVO. We are coming down in my father-in-law's WRX and my friends turbo legacy.
Chad.
Chad, to be quite honest, I'm not expecting hundreds of people Friday night. I asked for an e-mail reply a while ago for those interested in coming and got.....one reply :)
But, since we did the "Stellar Performance Dealership" remodel bit, we did gain quite a bit of room. There's a lot of room out back now to stick the new cars so we shouldn't have a problem. Not saying we have room for 200 extra cars, but we have room for quite a bit. Will just take some moving around ;)
And there is no problem with anybody showing up in an EVO or whatever, you just can't run it at the Shootout as everyone knows.
I might start a seperate post concerning Friday night Shootout party attendance, simply so we know round about how much food to get.

Hey Fess,
I'm not sure if I'm coming for the pizza party yet, but right now, I'm thinking I am. Its not that far(just under 2 hours). My car hasn't changed since last year, so I don't think I'm going to race. I'll probably be there thursday night and stay till Sunday morning. PM me if you wanna share.
Sweet, I think Im only gonna be there on Friday night and the floor sounds great to me.
I don't think that my car will be anywhere near the fastest, but I will drink the night before and the night after
"Shamokin, PA....Where drinking isn't just a past time-It's a way of life" ;)
FWIW, I just got a case of Crazy Horse 40's. Now THAT is the good stuff(right behind 8-ball :) ) Chris, I'll bring some down when you decide to put a FMIC on.
Believe it or not, beer is actually allowed at the track. But it goes without saying that responsibility is priority number 1.
Safety Update
Just wanted to also mention that 11.49 and quicker cars also require an SFI jacket to be worn by the driver

Hopefully it will just be bench racing.

Well since it doesn't look like I’ll be driving anything again this year, i’ll be happy to race a bar stool around ;)
I guess I can drive the STI... actually that's not a bad idea. We could send Pete a case of vegemite to power him though an around the clock work session on the ECU. I could steal your turbo, or better yet just put the Garrett kit on it.... I might have something to drive after all ;)

Learning that 3 weeks from Japan really means 3 months ;)

See how you Canadians are? I give you excellent directions and you turn your back on me. Doesen't matter, I don't drink anyway. Now go flaunt your attitude elsewhere :furious:

So you are like me, last time I got a case of beer it lasted 1 year.
Guys if you ever need directions, how to get to anywhere in US just ask Rex, this guy is better than my friend GPS.
I hope that you can make a few bucks out of this post. :D
People will start calling you for directions, just setup a 900 # phone line.:p

Lets see... Matt is busting on my town. (but he is right there is nothing to do but drink) Also I am waiting to hear from you on a price for that FMIC... waiting.... waiting... waiting..... Oh, and by the way the clutch is the car, Thank the guys at W&L for me (shameless plug for you Matt) But I think that the throwout bearing is messed up... Jeff is looking into it for me. It has a really loud whine when I am letting the clutch out.... you need to hear it.
I don't race around in my car drunk... but if I have a VERY wide and long, open road... it would be fun. But I am more then willing to do my share of drinking the night before.
Yes, most tracks do allow you to drink, but I will not be doing that until after I am done running the car. Then I will... wooohooo
Phil and Nathan... you are welcome to come to the Wayside (local bar) in the extremely large town of Shamokin on Friday night. If you tune my car (well somewhat tune) on Saturday I will by the beer on Friday night... Oh, and you guys had better be bringing your STi. Just wouldn't be right if you didn't

Notice 2 things here...
Chris doesn't trust us to tune his car when we've been drinking (oh crap I thought that was the FUEL map).
Chris wants to buy drinks BEFORE we actually tune his car.
So he has some trust, just not THAT much ;)
-Nathan
Yea... I trust yea.
"Hey, Chris wets get a another shot or 3 and head on out to that car of yours so that we can tune the crap out of it"
I can hear it now...
I think this would be a whole new challege to the TXS crew... I could be the first to say that I got my car tuned by a "high octane" team?
The invite stands...

I am just giving you a hard time. Actually I think for the most part that while we are willing to be helpful, we will not be custom tuning any cars at the shoot-out. I will help out and make suggestions if the occasion arises, but it is my intension to have a great time hanging out with the Subaru crowd. Trust me when I say you don’t want Phil tuning your car when he is in loud talker mode.
Yea, I know that you will not be tuning at the shootout. Truth be told I really didn't expect you to. You are there for the same reason everyone else is. To have fun. But the invite for Friday does stand... if you guys head to W&L Friday before I will be there and I will be heading out after. I hopefully will have the car slightly tuned by then.
Question though? Will you guys be running deals on parts that day? Just asking so I know whether I should be bringing money for a said BOV that was talked about in another post?????
