i had to take my differential protector off when i installed a new muffler. me question is in regards to the two nuts that hold the protector on, which are located towards the rear of the car. i wanted to know, now that the protector is off, if those nuts should be tightened all the way down? the reason i ask is because i used a hydraulic jack today to lift the car, and i lifted it at the rear diff. when i lifted it, the whole differential and drive shaft moved up before the car started to move up. this just didn't look right to me.

I installed a rear differential protector on a lift. When I put it on, I re-tightened the two bolts that hold the protector/diff to the frame last. By pushing up on the protector, I could make it move ~1.5". I tightened the nuts to the spec (50 N*m? I can't remember) at the middle of the travel, and haven't noticed anything since.

My $.02

thanks for the reply. i need to get some new sockets so i can tighten those bolts down. the movement of the differential just didn't look right to me when i jacked it up. hope this makes a difference.
