Aloooooooooooha...
Just completed my homemade intake for a MY00/01. I Will Call this a "TOTAL FLOW" intake....Total cost..Around $75 complete...

Items needed:
K&N Filter-$40
Aluminized tubing 2.5 in. Dynamax 180 Bend-$15
Rubber coupler-$5
Hose Clamps-$3
2.5in Pipe Brackets reshaped -$.50 Ea X 4
#10 3/4 in Bolts and Nyloc nuts-$.75 Ea X 4
Home Depot Rubber Gasket Material-$4
Flat Bar for Bracket Supports-$2.50

This is sooooooooo easy to make...You take the 180 degree bend and Mark it where the Bend Starts to make the curve and position the tube where the end is about at the 150 degree mark...

<IMG SRC="http://home.hawaii.rr.com/hiic/bracketintake.jpg" border=0>

Then using existing brackets from the old air box...Fabricate with the 2.5 in Pipe Straps to mount the pipe. I used a vise to bend the brackets to the required level...then cut the gasket material to place in between the brackets and screwed them down..Nice tight fit...http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/wink.gif

<IMG SRC="http://home.hawaii.rr.com/hiic/endpipe.jpg" border=0>

Then just mount the K&N to the end..

<IMG SRC="http://home.hawaii.rr.com/hiic/filter.jpg" border=0>

For a extra couple of bucks you can mount the Existing Breather hoses to the pipe..just drill and tap for NPT fittings also at the hardware store...Then with some Silicon hose you can dress it up...But thats it...

Now for how it runs...WOW..Very Similar to a Weapon R Sound or a JC Sports...It pulls VERY HARD...and the Sound is Awesome...Why Spend 180 Bucks for the same thing...Enjoy..

Sorry..Forgot the Total Picture...http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/smile.gif

wow. thats a cool idea. i noticed that you only used 2.5" tubing. the jc sports and weapon r intake uses a 3" tubing. hows the gains for your custom intake? any low end loss?

Actually with the smaller tubing...I notice NO low end loss...but you can just as easily make it out of 3 in..Dynamax has that too...
Napa, Believe it or not carries The Pipes...I plan on polishing it or you can paint it...either way...Glad you like it...http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/biggrin.gif

Nice job! Looks just like mine. One tip, the rubber connections need to be replaced with silicone. I found that out the hard way. Do you have your vacume hoses connected? I just drilled holes in my silicon connectors and tapped them into that. I have a K&N filter on mine now but it is old and needs to be replaced, I have a HKS filter on the way now.
Must be nice not having to deal with the MAF. Sinching that down was the hardest part for me. Looks great man!

Buckbomb, why your suggestion to use silicone instead of rubber? What's the harm in rubber connectors?

One only forseen problem is when you get to higher rpms, restriction will be present using te 2.5" piping rather than 3". As well, this system would be ok for MAP cars, but not for MAF. The materials that are being used will cause resonance frequencies.

Otherwise, this is a very resourceful intake! http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/biggrin.gif Personally though, I'd go w/ a JC Sports intake.

I would buy it if you ship to me in a complete kit(w/o the k&n filter) ready to go. It is easier for for you to create more since you know how to build it and find the parts inside out. It is nice!!!!!!

It looks good!

I am going to build one this weekend just to satisfy my own curiosity about the high rpm functionality (or lack thereof?) of my iSR intake.

[EDIT] Where did you source the rubber and silicone connectors from? What did you use the Home Depot rubber gasket material for? I am just trying to figure out how you got the 3"->2.5" adapter to attach to the throttle body.

Very cool, but where do you have the engine breather's going?

oh yea. forgot to mention, i went with a jc sports intake too. i'm too lazy to look for tubing and other stuff from muffler shops. hehe. are you planning to paint your intake?

HMan...No plans as of this time to make these commercially..Justthought I would share my resourcefullness...http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/biggrin.gif

SubieFL...Thanks for the kudos..But you guys can make this your self...It is easy...Really..Trust me..I ave aout an hour into it..and thats it..

Stimpy...The rubber gasket material goes underneath the Bracket to help sinch it down and not flop all around...Its the red material in the gasket...As for the Coupler..I bought this along time ago for $5 at a local shop...then used the hoseclamps to tighten it up...One tip..you make the Bracketts a little on the small side to you can tighten them down...Vise Grips do wonders on keeping everything in place...

One note...I noticed I gained 1-2 bars on my Air/Fuel...Meaning now its running richer than it was before...As for the Engine breathers...I will put the mini K&N's on those and tie wrap them down..or I Might just buy the fittings and tap it out..Don't know yet...

inpreza kid...Not planning on painting but it is an option...Actually I plan on polishing it out..should look pretty trick...I might even Wrap it with header tape...to lower the temp some..we will see...

Julian- If you look at the rubber connectors they say not to use them with heated applications. When they get hot they vent gasses and can get really soft. I used one and when it heated up, the clamp kinda cut the material when it became soft and it disconnected. My engine got real loud real quick! Scared the crap out of me.

I got some silicon hose from Compass Motorsports. Great stuff, and pretty blue.http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/biggrin.gif

Scooby South- You still haven't said where your crank case hoses are connected. Are they? My mechanic told me that the engine relies on those hoses being connected to the vacuum of the intake. He said if you don't have those connected you could experience some real problems down the road.

Is that really true? My engine breathers are not connected to anything right now becasue they just blow air.

The crank breathers dont have to be connected to the intake. All they do spout dirty oil into your intake. Which is especially sucky in this case seeing as you have no filter to catch the oil.

I will ask my mechanic again. I can't remember exactly what he said would break after a while. All I remember is that he said it is a big no-no to have them disconnected from the intake. The crank case relies on the vacuum or something. I wish I didn't have to attach them, it was the hardest part of building my intake.

Scooby South- Thanks, sorry if I sounded rude. I was just kinda concerned. Nice work on the intake, feels good to DIY doesn't it?http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/biggrin.gif
