i have a imprezars cat-back exaust from larry and was wondering if i should install it myself or take it to muffler shop and pay to have it done. it is a direct bolt up that uses the stock hangers so i won't have to do welding.

anyone install their own exaust with normal tools at home?

yes you can do it your self just make sure your arms are strong!!! the two bolts that connect it to the midpipe are a biatchhh! try to get the car off the ground as high as you can get it and use a breaker bar. it will sit nice in the hangers and BAM! you have a sweet sounding systemhttp://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/biggrin.gif seehttp://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/monkey.gif

Here is the installation guide (my website): http://www.geocities.com/matsut_rpi00/stromung.html

All you need is, 2 14mm wrenches, and a pair of ramps. You need 2 wrenches because you have to hold a nut when you try to loosen the bolt. Also, WD40 may help.

When reinstalling, just tighten the bolts as hard as you can.

yeah real tight or you will have a not so pleasant sound from the bottom of the car. just like tmat saidhttp://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/biggrin.gif good luck eh. oh yeah use wd40 like a while before you do the install, because those bolts are ignorant lil thingshttp://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/biggrin.gif

Nothing is loose on mine. No locktight is used. Just tighten as hard as you can with the wrenches. Also, use a little bit of anti-seize grease or any other grease on the bolts so they won't rust in future. It will be easier to get the bolts to loosen up next time you decide to change your exhaust.

Always use grease on all bolts and nuts for less frustration next time. http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/smile.gif

Its actually spelt LOCTITE, (my good old grandfather founded the company, his father invented the glue, it was the first anerobic adhesive). Just a little food for thought.

If you want to benefit from your exhaust, yes, reset the ECU. I've reset mine twice (intake silencer removal, muffler install) and I think it also helped in just letting the car start fresh and get used to my driving style (I bought it used). My friend's driven my '96 Brighton with above mods (muffler is a cheapy from Pep-Boys) and he test drove an L of about the same vintage and said the L didn't feel as powerful, so I think just letting the ECU start fresh for each driver can help.

the "correct" way (http://www.mrtrally.com.au/performance/howresetecu.htm) to reset your ECU

won't have to wait around for the hour

haven't tried it, but thought you might want to know

I poked around under my dash to try to reset my ECU using the MRT instructions. We've got the "green" plug, but I could only find one half of the other "black" plug. If anybody finds it, let me know cauz I'd rather reset my ECU this way than pulling my battery!

I have tried every way to reset the ECU which has been posted on this board. I have a Jumptronix meter and it is immediately obvious whether or not the ECU has been reset by the voltages you see. The only way which works consistently is to pull the negative battery cable. It doesn't take half an hour though - I have reset my ECU in only 5 minutes.

maybe it's just AUS imprezas, since I, too, haven't been able to find the black plugs.

or maybe we've got it eliminated down to just one plug.

who knows.
