View Full Version : EXhaust note!?!
WR-REX 03-29-2001, 09:04 AM will adding exhaust from sti or stromung make the car sound like a supped up honda civic? The tiresome "fart" noise that comes with every import racer. I hate that sound, but the Impreza stock sounded good in fact it almost sounded like it was camming at on time.
bratmantlz 03-29-2001, 09:07 AM i dont know about the sti or stromung but i have a pipe from imprezars.com and its nice and deep. boxer engine deephttp://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/biggrin.gif i havent heard one RS with a fart tip sound like a honduh.http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/monkey.gif my .02$

WR-REX 03-29-2001, 09:12 AM See that is just to big, does anyone have a pic of something like sti or stromung, or maybe something else, APS?
tmat3 03-29-2001, 09:12 AM Stromung is way different from any other I4 and V6 based exhaust system. My Stromung is very deep and loud. Nothing like my Civic's exhaust.
WR-REX 03-29-2001, 09:17 AM Loud like what? I dont want to be that noticeable but i want a free flowing exhaust with the same size tips as stock or near stock.
bratmantlz 03-29-2001, 09:19 AM then go stromung its a smaller tip and i have "heard" deep sounding. i rode in a stromung and it sounded softer than my pipe.
Subie Gal 03-29-2001, 09:19 AM subaru's...
if tuned right...
sound TONS different from Honda, Nissan, etc...
my car (Scoobysport cat back set up) does so not sound like any other... Roo's have a unique sound!

Ginseng 03-29-2001, 10:52 AM Hi WR-REX,
I have the Stromung WRX SS Dual Tip on my WRX and the sound is very satisfying. Deep, sorta rumbly, but pretty quiet compared to some exhausts I've heard. It's got nice tone at idle and sounds much deeper than buzzy Hondas at even part throttle. At WOT, it doesn't really rip and letting off, you don't get that *braaaaappp*. But overall I like it.
Cheers,
Wilkey

Need advice:
I am planning on getting an exhaust system. Here are some band name exhausts I am debating on.
1) Apexi N1
2) HKS (Hiper exhaust)
3) 5Zigen FireBall
4) HKS (Mini Drager)
Which of these gives me the most HP and beautiful tone sound?
All Your input would greatly appreciated~ (^_^)
bratmantlz 03-29-2001, 11:39 AM well alias angel i have good performance gains out of my pipe and nice deep burble when ever i want or need it. pic above is my pipe. http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/biggrin.gifi also have side shotshttp://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/biggrin.gif
Andrew 03-29-2001, 12:17 PM dont know if you guys said this, but this is to ANYONE who is worried about your subaru sounding like a Honda....It will NEVER EVER happen! I dont care what exhaust you put on it, it will NEVER sound like that. Why? Because we have a flat 4, not a straight 4.
AliasAngel, the most hp is you will get out of an exhaust is like 5 or 6hp if that. And that is the dual tip Stromung. Exhaust (IMHO) is mainly for personalizing your car (like body kits and stuff) it wont do anything unless you have a turbo but can be very very nice to listen to.
Now if you want to get into which sounds the better...well that becomes completely personal preference. Some will say go with the very quiet STi muffler, or some will say go with a Stromung for a mellow tone, and some will say forget all that and get a ScoobySport! I have never heard the ScoobySport in real life, but everyone has said it sounds awesome...but then again ALOT of people think Stromung is loud...um...I dont think its even close to being loud. If you are looking for something that will put you at gaurd when a cop comes by you have some other choices such as the grapefruit shooters. The best exhaust note I ever heard from a Scooby, was when I had the car without a muffler (yes I just disconnect the muffler and drove around) <a href="http://members.aol.com/specopsrb6/nomufflerscoob.wav">nomufflerscoob.wav</a> This was my favorite exhaust because it sounded REALLY racey and ALOT of pops like muscle cars. I cant even imagine what it would sound like with some borla headers http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/eek.gif But since I didnt want to die from carbon monoxide I had a straight flow exhaust put on and that became even louder but less racey<a href="http://members.aol.com/specopsrb6/127dbscooby.wav">127.4db from 20"</a>. Then cops stopped me and blah blah and I went to the Blitz NurSpec exhaust. <a href="http://members.aol.com/specopsrb6/scoobyblitz.wav">blitz</a>. I then put on the borla headers and it sounded really really nice <a href="http://members.aol.com/specopsrb6/borlablitz.wav">borlablitz</a> NONE of those sound files do the real thing justice. Oh yeha with the last setup, youll be setting car alarms off in parking lots at idle (not thats its like super loud, its just sooo deep and powerful that it does it wtih ease).
Of course....there is always the option of doing this http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/rolleyes.gif <a href="http://members.aol.com/specopsrb6/noheadersscooby.wav">no headers</a>
oh yeah and you lose low end torque with ALOT of these setups. Straight flow youll lose a good amount...borla headers youll lose a noticeable amount. When I put the stockers back in, you could really feel the difference.
Hope I helped some
Andrew

WR-REX 03-29-2001, 12:30 PM Does anyone have any pics of a 02 WRX with stronmung dual tips or sound clips? Does anyone have any wav files of the new WRX at all?
AliasAngel 03-29-2001, 02:20 PM Do any of you people has any of these band for exhaust system?
1) Apexi N1
2) HKS (Hiper exhaust)
3) 5Zigen FireBall
4) HKS (Mini Drager)
I would very much like to get the info on these four items above. By the way, What aftermarket makes Header for the 2.5RS? Came some of you recommend some great headers out there? I would like to keep my RS in N/A so. What configuration is best under NA condition with Header? 4-2-1? or? (It is an Automatic Trans) Thanks~
bratmantlz 03-29-2001, 02:37 PM borla makes the headers i also have the N1 style exhaust on my RS.
AliasAngel 03-29-2001, 02:55 PM Hi~ can you tell me more about your Apexi N1 system? Is it as good as you think it is after the install? How is the preformance? What about the appearance issue? Is the exhaust too big that it is hanging and may drag on the floor if driving in dumply condition? Give me your full experience on this product. Thank you Brat~ -Alias Angel

bratmantlz 03-29-2001, 03:10 PM well this is how it loooks from the side.
<IMG SRC="http://www.imprezars.com/images/mufflerclose.jpg" border=0> i havent hit a bump that touched the pipe. this is a N1 style exhaust, from http://www.imprezars.com/ its affordable and looks better IMHO than the N1 apexi sells theres is too boxy the lines on this one are ssmoother and more rounded. as for performance i am staying N/A until a affordable turbo comes my way. i went out to tune my car and with the mods i have got to 60mph by a spot me and larry ganz picked out i think he said he got to 68mph only a 8mph difference! and on the roads he said i was pulling nicely from him as he accelerated( i drive fast alothttp://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/rolleyes.gif ) so thats my experience with this pipe. very clean looking nice burble idleing and at startup, and cruising quiet enough to not attract attention from policehttp://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/biggrin.gif thats important to mehttp://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/biggrin.gif any more ?'s just let me knowhttp://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/biggrin.gif hope that helpshttp://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/biggrin.gif oops edit: its 2.5 pipehttp://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/ptitmartien.gif

AliasAngel 03-29-2001, 03:27 PM Hi Brian:
IMHO (What does this stands for?) As you can see... I am new into this Subaru stuff. The only new word I learn was Scooby.. ~ (^_~) Anyway, I was looking into that Apexi N1 for about 2 weeks now, but no one I know has one. Especially not to mention that hardly anyone has an Impreza. Anyway, I got my Scooby for about two weeks now. I wanted to do some mod on it but just looking for advice right now. My brother's Civic is looking and running hot... however, he wasn't able to give me any usable advice due to the fact that he only did research on Honda so. Here I am... I am here to be "A Wannbe Scooby Addicted"~ (^_~) Thank for your suggestion Brian. Your ride looks phat indeed. My friend want a Diamond Black as well. He is still searching for it as we speak. I am very satisfield with my Blue Pearl. (o^_^o) Say, do you have aftermarket header on your ride? Curious~ Talk to you later~ Alias Angel
Andrew 03-29-2001, 05:48 PM IMHO=In my humble opinion
Edit: AliasAngel, I read a little bit more into your post and it seems you havent done anything to the car yet....If this is true there is 2 things you definitely should do before any exhaust stuff. Get an 18 or 20mm rear sway bar. This is an absolute must. Then get rid of the RE92 tires (or keep them if you plan on getting some new wheels that are different size).

bratmantlz 03-29-2001, 06:43 PM those are good mods to do but i went with power the car already handles nice. i am actually getting a set of re92 to take the place of the rubber i have know. and am hopeing to get in on a deal on a yellow rear 18mm sway bar. tires are last on my list cuz i am here where the weather always changes.. i wouldnt mind some coilovers someday either. but i like the pipe nice deep burble and performance i love.
fellfrosch7 03-29-2001, 07:22 PM Shameless plug for the Stromung on my car... http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/biggrin.gif

Disregard the ghetto steelies, please. It's still snowing upstate New York. http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/smile.gif
remarcable 03-29-2001, 10:14 PM I know someone with a straight pipe on a 2.2L 1995 impreza L.
Haven't actually talked to him about it, but he has a ton of SWRT stickers etc etc (cough rice cough) and doesn't race. He seems to think that with the straight pipe and K&N air filter his 95 Impreza L makes 180HP.
Uhuh. Straight pipe a N/A 2.2L scooby and get gains from it? Uhuh.
Miracle Worker 03-29-2001, 10:28 PM Here is a pic Rear view (http://216.242.153.40/MembersList/ViewMemberPics.cfm?MemberID=1388&PicNumber=4) I know there's a stromung sound clip somewhere around here. It's not BIG or Too Small. It sounds throaty live a little V8. Not at all like most Import Exhausts.
kaos200 03-29-2001, 11:27 PM I must say my scoobysport sounds just plain awesome (wow been a while since I used that word!) it is the sweetest sounding exhaust IMO... especially with a turbo in the way!
HondaH8er 03-30-2001, 01:07 AM Here's a pic of the dual-tip Stromung on my car. I love it, nice deep tone to it, doesn't make much noise at freeway speeds, unless I drop the hammer on the throttle. Definitely not a Honda-like sound! I guess several different exhausts have been dyno tested, and the Stromung had the biggest gain, at about 5-6 hp. Not a gain that's super noticeable, but every little bit helps. And my mileage has increased a little bit, too. Consistently getting ~15-20 miles more per tank. Not a lot, but again, every little bit helps!
<IMG SRC="http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/image_uploads/Stromung2.jpg" border=0>
jhayzhon 03-30-2001, 05:00 AM So with a stromung or any other exhaust you'll lose some torque on the low end? Thats not very happy...well at least for me.
