View Full Version : MAF Failure.........Again!

well it happened again today, my MAF failed, that will be number 2 within the last 3 weeks now. I guess I'll be forced to take the intake off now, which sucks because I know I'll lose some good power. Is there anyway to have some sort of an intake, but keep the MAF safe? There has to be something. The old Subaru has become alot less appealing these last few months. After having to take it in 7 times for warranty work, its starting to get old. With all of the money I've spent on mods for this car, I could have one very fast turbo SI with alot less headaches. I may have to start looking around for something that is less expensive to build and doesn't crap out every time you modify the engine. I don't know it just seems to me that the RS is just too damn delicate to do anything with. I may just have to rid myself of it, major bummer.

Thanks
Beau

What intake were you using. Remind me not to get that one.

One thing you could do is get a programmable ECU. You will get more HP and have no worries about the MAF anymore.

Are MAFs covered by the powertrain warranty? Where do you get a programmable ECU at?
My acceleration hesitation came back (I cleaned the MAF and changed plugs/plug wires). I did the above work and used the Subaru air filter for awhile and then I put my Amsoil filter back in(removed any possible excess oil). For awhile it pulled much better than with the stock air filter, but it is hesitating again. I'll try cleaning the MAF again tonight - and might have to stick with a paper filter. My problems must be with the MAF. A

Is it synched down real good? I have mine strapped down pretty tight and have had no problems. I blew one a while back but that was the result of water locking my filter while rallying. Other than that I haven't had any problems.

Have you read the thread about JCSports figuing out that the MAF failure was due to oil shorting out the film on the MAF. I suscribe to this belief anyway, cuz what is the difference on how other people attach their intakes different from mine?! Vibrations, I don't think so, unless I have a less vibrating engine than the others. Have you ever cleaned your filter? and most importantly HOW did you clean your filter? Did you soak it in oil, was it dripping? Could you shake it real hard after you sprayed it and get oil coming off the filter? Have you checked the inside of the intake tube? Is there any smidgen of oil in the tube? If there is, it's the oil..my .02cents http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/biggrin.gif

I feel your pain. But I have to support the air turbulence theory on this one. I had my MAF fail after 50,000 miles of having an intake on my 97 GT. I had already re-oiled the filter twice with no problems. My MAF failed after a pretty hard shift from first to second where I gassed it hard, changed gears while letting off the gas, then gassed it hard again . . . then BAM! My MAF died. This was around 15,000 miles after I re-oiled the filter. Failure most likely induced by air turbulance rather than oil contamination. Just my 2 cents.

Mprezive, Sorry to hear that - must be getting expensive real fast.

Since I'm using a JCS intake also, I'd really like to hear if you know what is causing the MAF failure.
