View Full Version : Autopower Rollcage for GC8
zzyzx 01-17-2003, 02:48 AM I'm trying to get specifics on whether Autopower makes a bolt-in rollcage for a MY00 RS. I've seen one listed for a WRX, but not an RS. Anybody here have experience with these rollcages and have installed them in your GC8?
Any help appreciated!

OMP makes a nice bolt-in cage for the GC8. You can check out www.primmracing.com for details on that one.
mykrrrr 01-17-2003, 11:13 AM Beat me to it Phil.
I think Dante is selling his personal OMP cage. It does require some cutting into the IP for the A pillars.

i didn't think any of the pre-fab roll cages worked due to the sun roof..
Dobes 01-17-2003, 01:04 PM Try www.rallispec.com They can get a Sparco cage that will work. And they'll do a great job of installing it.
Edit: image is screwy. Go here for pics: http://www.pbase.com/jeffdoble/rollcage

my question is... work for WHAT?
WHAT are you needing a cage for?

FYI- Bolt-in cages are no longer legal for SCCA Pro/Club Rally.
zzyzx 01-17-2003, 06:51 PM Jamie - SCCA and NASA club racing. No rally stuff, I'll leave that to you loonies. ;)
I will give Rallispec a call. It does need to be a bolt-in cage in my case. Jeff, that Sparco setup looks nice! You mind sharing cost info on this?
I know autopower builds them to suit, so I should also give IO Port a call. I was hoping I could find a cage supplier closer to the midwest, as freight shipping costs $$.
Thanks all for the info.

zzyzx 01-17-2003, 08:14 PM I talked to Dante.
He posted pics on his site at:

Scroll to the bottom.
Jeff - You're cage looks great, but it's a weld-in cage, isn't it?
- Steve
T-Bolt 01-17-2003, 10:59 PM I have done lots of business with the owners of Autopower. Give them a call at 619-297-3300 and ask for Don. He should be able to answer your questions concerning your application
Dobes 01-18-2003, 11:42 AM Yes, it's welded in. IIRC, it came with extra hardware to allow it to be bolted in. As for cost, I'd say to contact Dave at Rallispec. Since everyone's needs seem to be different your price will vary. Installation alone was twice the cost of the cage!

Before you buyany cage, especially a pre-fabbed bolt-in make double sure that it meets SCCA and NASA GCR/CCR requirements.
Many prefabbed cages for sale such as the Cusco cages are not at all legal for SCCA and NASA racing. You would not pass tech, and would not be issued a logbook.
Also keep in mind the recent SCCA and NASA cage rule change that does not allow DOM cages anymore, and no new logbooks will be issued for a car with a DOM cage.
btw - what class are you planning on competing in?
I cant think of any classes that an impreza would be legal in aside from NASA Super Unlimited, or maybe SCCA ITE (depending on your local region)
and either class, you will be extremely outclassed by big machinery
zzyzx 01-20-2003, 01:18 AM Hm, I have the 2002 GCR and it says DOM is allowed. Did things change for '03? I have a very good local source (Midiv board member / roll-cage builder) that will be able to determine whether the cage in question is legal and plan to consult him prior to any purchase.
And yes, ITE. In Midiv, ITE will accept any vehicle legal for any professional series and it's ruleset. There are two obvious choices: World Challenge / Touring, and USTCC.
And who said anything about being competitive? But really, I've looked up Midiv ITE and to date the assortment of cars is suprisingly in-line with where a 2.5 RS would fit.

whoops I got them mixed up, it is ERW that is no longer allowed, and yes it is a new rule for '03.

sounds great! have fun and keep us updated on your progress :)

If your looking for a bolt in cage, I've got the best one made, hands down!
I have Safety Devices bolt in cage, FIA approved, Group N legal. It's for 4 door GC8. The rear section is all pre-welded
Safety Devices sent me the wrong one so I need to get rid of it. I'd be willing to work something out with the shipping.
Let me know if you're interested.

zzyzx 01-21-2003, 01:24 AM Hmm. Sounds good, but I have a coupe. I wonder what the differances are? Shoot me a PM with specifics if you could.
Thanks,
- Steve
Safety Devices cages are top notch.
zzyzx 01-21-2003, 11:41 AM A gentleman by the name of Conrad from Safety Devices informed me that they do not offer a cage for the NA 2.5 RS coupe. :(

elgorey 01-21-2003, 11:57 AM FWIW, a good custom built cage is always better than a prefabbed bolt-in anyway.
> FWIW, a good custom built cage is always better than a prefabbed bolt-in anyway.
Yes and no.......if your goal is to have a street car or semi-race car, a good bolt in cage is the best option. I say a "good" bolt in cage because not all cages are built the same! One that's FIA approved should be your only option and will most likely be safer than barn built custom weld-in one!

There is no such thing as a good cage in a street car. Street cars should never be caged.
There is also no such thing as a "semi-race" car. The closest thing would be a track car or solo1 car, which should use a roll bar, not a cage.
This thread is about race car cages, not the bling bling show car stuff.
btw, FIA approval doesnt mean squat in the USA. SCCA, NASA, EMRA and all the marquee racing clubs have much stricter cage rules.
for example the cusco "FIA approved" cages are not even close to being legal, and are nothing more than for bling.
ask any real road racer, a good custom built, welded cage is always better than an off the shelf bolt-in.
Paisan 08-25-2003, 07:31 PM Been checking into this lately. So far all my NASA and SCCA sources are saying that the OMP and Sparco will NOT qualify for racing. I was gonna jump on the cages that primm was offering but have to reconsider now that I know they aren't legal :(
I'm probably gonna have to go witha custom setup, unless I can get Autopower to make one for me.
Any ideas if the WRX bolt-in cage would work on a GC8?

Why is everyone so afraid of custom cages? :)
One of those OMP or Sparco cages would have ended up being more expensive than a custom cage, and not be as safe.
Your local cage builder would be more than happy to build you a custom bolt-in or weld-in rollbar or cage. Mitch Piper here in No. VA has done a couple RS, he builds an excellent cage and if you dont mind the drive you could contact him about it.

very little chance, since the GD is considerably wider than the GC, and autopower engineers the cages to tuck right in as close to the interior as possible.
Evegan 08-26-2003, 11:03 AM how much are custom cages going for? I more interested in a simple 4pt bolt in cage than a full race cage. I'd like to get into solo1 and more HPDEs but would feel safer with a roll bar and to be able to use my harness on the track.

You should be able to get a custom 4pt bolt-in rollbar made and installed for less than $600, including harness installation.
There are a ton of good cage builders in NC, and prices down there tend to be less than up here, so you may be able to get one for better.
