View Full Version : Is this OK?

Call me lazy, but when I do drive my WRX, I drive it to my office which is less than a mile from my apartment. Now, when I get to my workplace, my engine's temperature isn't even up yet. Is it safe to keep driving it this way? I put about 10-15 miles on my WRX per week...is this OK for the engine to have such short runs?

Thanks..

Poor car :(
No, this is not good for it. If it is only driven on short trips in this manner the condensation and other combustion byproducts that build up in the crankcase during cold engine operation will never have a chance to burn off. Also it will always be running very rich because it is always in the cold start/warmup cycle, so unburnt fuel may find its way into the oil as well.
At least once a week take the car on a nice long trip to get it fully warmed up and burn all the crap out of the engine. This is especially important in colder weather. And change the oil often.

I had an old scooby & when I'd make too many short trips she'd let me know by hitting on 3 cyl.
I'd then take it out, get it warm & beat on it a little & she'd clear her self out...

In the "good old days" a hardly-used-at-all sports car, would be turned over to a mechanic to tune it. The mechanic would take it for a spicy drive in the mountains. These "Italian Tuneups" can be done by the owner at a much lower cost.:)

Some old timers when pulled over by the cops would say, "I was just blowing the carbon out.":D

Yeah, it's really not good for it. Take it for a longer drive, or even better, walk or bicycle to work.

Ironically, that car will probably command a premium on the used car market because of its low mileage.

Hey, thanks guys for the input! I'll drive it around more often. I've never been in this situation, so I wasn't sure as to how detrimental short-runs can be for a car. Looks like my lazy ass is walkin...

Tragedy,

You have another option, find a fun bit of road and make your commute longer. If you drive straight to work, and then take a 20 mile drive home, you'll have something to look forward to all day, and the car will be happy.
