View Full Version : More support from Flatirons
MarkW@Flatirons 01-24-2003, 09:03 AM Hi all,
My name is Mark Willemsen. I am the Subaru Service Manager at Flatirons Subaru. I have joined this forum to continue building the relationship with Subaru / Impreza owners. This relationship started when several of our employees (Bret Carter, Troy Fankell and Jon Eric Ferguson) took active interest in the Subaru performance market.
First off, I would like to thank you for your business and for your praise of our dealership. As you all know, the performance aspect of Subaru is relatively new to the American based market. Flatiron's embraces this trend (where as most other dealers have only shown minimal interest at best). Flatirons has been fortunate to have Bret, whom through several beatings has gotten me to recognize not only the amount of enthusiasts, but also the need for a modification friendly dealership.
Secondly, I would like to touch on some concepts regarding our operations. As a dealership, we have to follow the rules set forth by Subaru. Currently those rules are not very specific on modifications that affect warranty. This can be both a benefit and a detriment. When trying to repair a vehicle, we are not looking for modifications that would render a repair as 'non-warrantable' (as many other dealerships do). Understandably, when a vehicle comes in for an unusual or dramatic failure we have to try to pinpoint the cause. When these unusual failures occur, we're required to contact our district service representative for an approval on the warranty claim. Of the many questions asked, maintenance and service history is weighed heavily. Often times we have no service history, which can affect the outcome of the service rep's decision. This is where you come in.... Many of you come to see us when you are having problems with your vehicle, yet very few are coming in for routine maintenance or other services. This situation makes it difficult to get the required approval. Being able to show that our dealership has properly maintained and addressed a vehicle's problems helps 'smooth the road' tremendously in getting warranty approval when a car has been modified.
Finally, the amount of phone calls Bret receives is increasing, taking away from time spent in the shop. I'd like to offer my assistance with this. Knowing now that I am in full support of what he is doing, please feel free to contact me with any questions or problems. I cannot offer you the same level of technical expertise (this is all relatively new to me as well), but I can set up appointments with him, field questions, just about anything to help keep him working on cars.
In closing, I'd like to thank you again for the praise and helping our business to grow. I hope that this post was in no way taken negatively. My final gesture in this long-winded post, is that I would like to offer you all 10% off of labor performed (this offer does not include discounted or coupon items – sorry for the disclaimer). I look forward to assisting you in the future and hope that all continues to go well. Any suggestions or responses to this post would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you,
Mark Willemsen

Skimann20 01-24-2003, 09:26 AM No negativity taken in this e-mail, you were just saying it the way it was. Also, thanks for the support that your dealerdhip has shown me even though I did not buy my car there. You Guys have always treated me with respect. Thanks Alot! I'll see you on wed. 830 i'm having my door handle looked at.

rupertberr 01-24-2003, 10:08 AM I guess I need to move to Boulder.
I'll just wait until after "your either with us or against us" Bush nukes Boulder for voting against war with Iraq!
Seriously thanks. Wish there was someone like that in Denver.
T-WRX450 01-24-2003, 10:09 AM I wanted to also to add my 2 cents to Mark's post...
I know that we are the most proactive dealer in the region and as more products are introduced we shall see them at one point or another. We try very hard to understand all of the performance products and how they interact with your Subaru as well as trying to have everyone come away with a pleasant feeling and a confidence that their car and they themselves were treated with respect and the problem was taken care of. Mark raises a lot of good points and I also would like to offer my assistance with any questions because not very many questions are new ones and no question about your car is dumb or irrelevant... the whole point of this forum, isn't it?
Also, if you need Genuine Subaru parts I'll try to match any verifiable quote for a new part.
My number Direct is (303) 402-5142 here at Flatirons.
Thank You

Dolphin Overton 01-24-2003, 02:21 PM rupertberr: I drive from denver every time I need anything subaru related... It isn't that bad of a drive, and it is WELL worth it.;)
Rexwell 01-24-2003, 03:03 PM Mark,
Thank you for the awesome post and your honesty. I have hesitated to sing the praises of Bret for fear of getting him in trouble...but I finally had to post a few days ago in that other thread.
Bret understands the value of excellent customer service, and I'm delighted to see that his boss is on board now as well! Bret is the reason I'm buying my STi from Jon Eric and you can bet I'll be bringing it back to you folks for regularly scheduled maintenance.
I am so happy to see that Bret wasn't scolded or fired for wanting to take care of 'his own' in the Subaru community. His actions equal profits for Subaru in ways that aren't easily visible.
Depending on the price of the car I am really wanting the 10yr 100k warranty if it is offered and I look forward to a great long-term service relationship with Flatirons.
Cheers!
Rexwell
davidm_sh 01-24-2003, 04:01 PM Thanks for the up front and honest post again. Sorry I don't bring my car in for routine maintenance but I do have some valid reasons as to why I don't :)
1) I live in Colorado Springs [heh]
2) It would cost me substantially more if I did bring my car in for regular maintenance like oil changes becuae I change my oil every 3,000 miles with full synthetic oil. Which for the filter, crush washer, and oil alone costs me $20.
3) I do plan on bringing my car in for my 60k and 90k services however if that helps any?
I would say I am MUCH more anal about my car and wouldn't trust it to the dealership BUT I whole heartidly trust it with people like Bret at Flatirons. Again the main obstacle is simply the distance to your dealership. But it should go to show how highly I think of it becuase that is where I chose to buy my WRX from.
SiouxBe 01-24-2003, 04:37 PM I'd like to thank all who have showed their loyalty and support for Bret, Troy and myself here at the Dealership as we have all worked hard to show our support for the community by our active involvement. We are fortunate indeed to have been able to combine our livelyhood with our interest in AWD Sport Compact Performance. I speak for all of us when I say that those of you like JJ, Paul and Harvey and many others too numerous to mention make us always try harder because of your show of appreciation, support and loyalty. If I can be of service, let me know by calling me at 303.443.0114 Thanks, Jon Eric
hoodwho 01-24-2003, 05:19 PM Jon Eric,
We will be coming in soon to get a WRX of some sort... (STi or Standard) depending on what the insurance does for Todd's Totaled WRX. but we will be making ANOTHER 40min trip to Flatirons driving past 3 subaru dealers to get there. ;)
not sure when, but Todd wont own anything else. and wont buy from anywhere else again.
hotrod 01-24-2003, 11:54 PM Mark:
Thank you very much for your up front support to auto enthusiasts. I think I speak for many that for a large percentage of folks, the reason they do not come into dealerships for routine service, aside from the obvious economic issues and their being do it your selfers, but many are afraid of the potential problems if they go to the wrong dealership with a simple issue and end up in a battle royal to defend their warrantee.
We understand that there are limits to what you can do all the performance community wants is a fair shake. I think as you monitor this and similar web sites that the community actively tries to police itself and will in no uncertain terms let folks know if they are abusing the system.
SOA and corporate level folks need to clearly express to their dealers, that dealerships cannot, and should not deny warrantee claims for frivolous reasons. In the long run it is a simple economic equation. For every questionable warrantee repair they avoid, they lose several times as much money in routine maintainence fees, new car sales, not to mention the intangible of customer good will.
I know from the tone of your post that you and your staff understand this.
Rest assured if I ever need major service or a new subaru (my 88 GL is getting a little old so it is a current issue for me.) Your agency will be the first one I go to. This will be directly traceable to your staffs efforts to take good care of their customers.
I currently need a replacement RR tail light housing. I have been looking for one in the junk yards, but due to this post I will be buying a new replacement from you parts department.

gvmelbrty 01-25-2003, 04:03 AM Wow, I've never been there, but it sounds like you guys at Flatirons are really doing it right - starting with w/ a good attitude toward the customer and ending with quality work out the door (hopefully at a competitive price). Subaru should feature your shop in a training course for other dealerships around the country.
As soon as the Forester turbo is out, I'll definetly make the drive up from the Springs to talk w/ jon. This will be my first new-car purchase - I just wish you were a little closer. Do you have loaners available in case service requires an overnight stay?
-tom
wrxlvr 01-25-2003, 07:10 PM I have been given a loaner car anytime my car required service at Flatirons. Green or White Legacy wagon baby. :)
MarkW@Flatirons 01-27-2003, 08:46 AM I appreciate the responses and also the support you are all showing for our dealership. Please feel free to contact me directly at (303)402-5155 if you have any questions or concerns. If any of you have any suggestions on how we here can make you feel "safe", please post them. I am interested to know what your fears and concerns are.
Thank You,
Mark Willemsen
p.s. We do have loaners available (by appointment) for overnight stays. Green or White Baby!!:D
Ronin2121 01-27-2003, 11:58 AM Damn hoodwho,
whenever I see your post, I have to run to the garage and check to see if my rex is still in one piece  .
shout out to Bret and Troy. I have driven from Aurora to have Bret work on my baby and it was well worth the long drive!
Todd
DjRez4 01-28-2003, 11:18 AM Flatirons is the ONLY place I will bring my WRX for service. Keep up the good work, guys! Mark, it's great to see a service manager with an attitude like yours. I've worked in a Subaru service department and I wish you had been my service manager there (won't mention where it was....you guys should already know).
I only have one complaint: Troy keeps making me buy stuff! :D
hoodwho 01-28-2003, 12:04 PM ya sorry about that Todd...
:D
now to find out if the 02-03 Prodrive springs work on the 04....
ImprezaRS dot com 01-29-2003, 02:14 AM sticky...
imprezawrxsti.com 01-30-2003, 10:28 PM I have said it 1,000+ times, but I will say it again- Bret, Jon, Troy, Mark, and everybody else I have worked with has been GREAT at Flatirons.
I take my RS there for service regularly, and of course we all know what badge my STi will be wearing when I get it, and where I will take it for maintenence. :)
FWIW, I think that Flatirons is making and has made a great business decision in trying to be THE PLACE to go for Sube's, especially those of the performance nature. They have and continue to succeed in this area.
I just really can't say enough. :)

wrxnate 01-30-2003, 10:42 PM Mark,
Recently my car was brought to Flatirons with a stripped tranny, I have a bolt on turbo (VF22@15psi) and an exhaust (BPM)...maybe 50hp over stock. I was denied warrenty even though SOA admitted the faulty transmisssion and has a recall on clutches and 1st/2nd gear syncros. Needless to say I am still very offended that my warrenty claim was voided by SOA when we and they know that the 5 speed fails mod or not! Should I take this up with SEMA? SOA? I know a number of WRX drivers that have had the same failure and the warrenty was honered due to recall......please advise, as I know other WRX owners are worried after my failure. I can only say that I have had numerous WRX owners contact me for the details of my failure, and we all feel that SOA has used my "slight mods" as a scapgoat to a recall. I am not asking for money....or anything else, I just feel that business has ethics, and SOA is poor and I will keep my WRX with a smile on my face....but honestly, they have lost a customer. I have owned numerous VW products and have boosted the HP wayyyyyy beyond 50hp above stock.....no failure to speak of. Is this not a rally based car? I will move on to other manufacturers after this vehicle (Audi, VW, BMW, Volvo) I know they will handle 50hp
BTW: I bought the car from Jon Eric, thumbs up on he and Bret "the subaryu masta"...those guys are priceless to your dealership!!!
My car is on the road......2002 w/27k miles, new tranny/clutch/flywheel/pressure plate/throwout bearing.
all of the above have been recalled...I paid Out Of Pocket.... F#@* SOA
please advise...as you are so "mod friendly" elighten myself and my friends here on the RMIC
Nate
I also feel like what Nate said needed saying. Nates car is VERY mild in comparison to mine (at least 100hp difference) and my transmission is running fine. I might need a clutch, but thats about it. I understand that Subaru is a business and that they are protecting their bottom line by minimizing overhead and maximizing profits. Subaru built a fine automobile in the WRX which is overall well engineered, designed, produced and sold by a network of dealers I consider to be some of the best in the world.
At least I used to think that.
Lately, I am beginning to hedge from my undying love of Subaru because of some of the things I am hearing. Denying warranty converage to someone with basic mods like Nate because he happened to be at the dealership when the regional SOA people are there is pathetic. I know for a fact that there have been cars covered at that dealership for that very repair which were far, far beyond the level of modification of Nates car. Some of these cars have big turbos, standalone engine management, Nitrous, even stroked motors and they are still being covered under warranty? No offense to either party involved, but either these cars are being covered when they should not be or SOA is having "selective memory" gangster ethics when it comes to the standards set for service.
There is a documented history of drivetrain issues with the WRX transmission, clutch and flywheel which has been manifested in a series of recalls which are free if you are still under warranty. I believe Nate's problem was most likely related to this issue, but now we will never know because some sanctimonious turd from SOA swooped through during the diagnosis of his problem and denied him warranty. So, in addition to never knowing exactly what his problem was, SOA is saving a few bucks and losing a customer. Great job, guys!!! Yea for the Subaru team!!!
I gotta say I agree with the praise for the guys at Flatirons - especially Bret, but enough is enough. If some of these guys with 400hp WRX's can go up and get a transmission/synchro/clutch and flywheel rebuild under warranty, then Nate's case should be no different. I just have a problem with there being a double standard for anyone, especially someone who has put every possible bolt on mod on their car and expects their warranty to be just like it was a stock vehicle. Gimme a break.
If you modify a car you will pay the penalties eventually. I know my car is starting to show signs of wear in the drivetrain, and I am absolutely going to go and PAY Flatirons to do my work, not try to cheat them out of some free service I know I dont deserve. Nate and I are tuners and we know what we got into by adding performance parts to our rides. I would advise anyone else in the same situation to do the same thing. Give honest money for honest work and everyone, including the dealership, will be better off for it.
Cheers
JaMa
PS - To anyone who cares, I am cancelling my Sti order and giving it to a buddy of mine because I dont want anything else to do with the SOA Company. I am buying a Volvo, which I know will at least have fair warranty coverage if I decide to put in a K&N air filter.
wrxnate 01-31-2003, 12:07 AM After examining my teeth that were drained from the plug, they were heat damaged...changed in color and obviously "warn". I looked over the gears with may father a long time mechanic and former crew chief for Porsche efforts in SCCA. He said the failure was manufactuter related and the tranny would have shelled no matter how it was treated or the horsepower applied. There were even stress cracks in the teeth!
Thanks again to my friends who assisted me in my tranmission swap...I will never forget and I owe you bigtime!
Nate
Judah 01-31-2003, 09:20 AM When trying to repair a vehicle, we are not looking for modifications that would render a repair as 'non-warrantable' (as many other dealerships do).
Straight from my customer invoice: "customer states that brakes fade and give way"
cause: "due to backpressure from aftermarket exhaust"
MarkW@Flatirons 01-31-2003, 10:47 AM You guys keep mentioning a recall on wrx transmissions. As far as I know ( I have logged a call to subaru to verify if I am right or wrong and will post accordingly) there is no "recall" on any components of that drivetrain aside from the park rod (effecting auto trans only) They did come out with a bulletin regarding clutch noise when downshifting. We have also done some transmission syncros for grinding but neither have been under a recall. Judah, please call me with your last eight digits of vin so I can recheck that ticket (in all honesty it doesn't make a whole lot of sense). Nate, I am sorry that we could not assist you with your transmission. I would reccommend you hold on to all of your invoices regarding the transmission in case Subaru deems there to be a flaw with the wrx transmissions sheering 1st and 2nd gear teeth off. I need to reitterate the fact that we are trying to do the best we can. I cannot guarantee that every repair will be covered. I also have a modified vehicle still under warranty (non-Subaru) and I do understand everyones frustrations in having my own warranty "voided". I urge any of you that we have not been able to help to call me with your last eight digits of your vin and I will relook into your tickets and see if I can get any assistance. Now, with that offer I again cannot guarantee anything and I hope that everybody who calls will not only understand that but will call with proffesionalism (i.e if you are going to call just to scream/ yell about how you think this is bull****, please don't call). As always I apprecaite all the props for Bret and hope that the Flatirons image continues to grow stronger in the wrx community.
Thank You,
Mark (303)402-5155
P.S. As a request, when you guys come in here for whatever reason I would like you to stop by and say hi or leave me your screen name. I would like to put faces with names. Thanks Again
As always Mark, thanks for acknowledging all of us. We appreciate a dealer paying any attention to us at all.
However, those issues you mention I would consider transmission issues, whether they are recall related or not, which I thought they were.
I hate to put Bret on the spot here, but IIRC he said "The WRX transmission is a ticking timebomb." I believe he said that directly to Nate. Now, I dont know what that means, but Bret is a damn good Subaru mechanic and if he thinks WRX transmissions are failing because they are inherently flawed or not built to handle the load of that turbo engines, I would tend to believe him.
What Nate said earlier is true as well. I was a VW guy before this, having owned 3 GTI's, 2 of them with more than double the factory horsepower. Now, other than replacing a clutch, which is a perfectly reasonable thing to do in a car with that much power, I NEVER had to do anything else to them drivetrain or transmission related. Dont you think its time for SOA to "fess up" and admit that they put a cheap, generalistic transmission in these cars which is not meant to handle the load of the turbo engine? I believe this transmission is very similar if not the same transmission used in either the Forester 5 speed or the 2.5RS or both. Now, anyone who has been around Subarus for any period of time knows that those cars even have transmission reliability problems so I can only interpolate that this "underbuilt" tranny is going to have even more issues on a car with 40% more horsepower from the factory.
My 2c,
JaMa
wrxnate 01-31-2003, 12:52 PM Mark,
Thanks again and I do appriciate your team at the dealership...they are all outstanding!! My frustration is not with you or your organization, but rather SOA. If you do a search on tranmission failure on this board you will find this is a trend on many WRXs. Like I said, I am not seeking reimbersment of any kind, just want to see if there is any action I can take at a National level to help all WRX owners and your organization.
Nate
MarkW@Flatirons 01-31-2003, 01:20 PM Jama,
You could be 100% correct that transmissions MAY be underbuilt. Currently Subaru test show that their transmissions are designed to handle "factory" settings and power. As everyone knows any manufacturer runs field test on equipment. If the equipment passes the test it goes into production. For a component to to be redesigned after it passes field test it requires a certain percentage of common failures (I don't know the actual percent). A perfect example of this is the clutch noise situation. Original test showed no problems. After the wrx release several comon complaints of noise on decel started showing up, now, we have an update. My "hopes" would be that IF the transmissions start to show common failures then they also would have an update. Untill or if that happens we handle transmission issues on a case by case basis following the existing Subaru guidlines.
Thank You,
Mark

What are you trying to accomplish JaMa by posting against the grain here? By your own admission you are through with SOA, and since you've modded your own car heavily the warranty issue is moot for you.
Why ruin it for the rest of us by calling Bret on what you might have recalled him saying!?!?
Help me understand here...because I *do* plan to continue dealing with Flatirons partly because of the very candor you are working to destroy.
You say 'enough is enough' but nobody is forcing you to read this praise. What has SOA done to you? You modded your car with full acceptance that warranty claims may be denied, you claim that folks with mods who get warranty repairs are abusing the system...why are you complaining? Your car still works and you haven't been denied a warranty claim at all!
Sounds like whining for no good reason other than to soapbox...and enough is indeed enough.

My WRX put Mark and myself through "tranny hell" over way too many months. Through the whole thing he was a great to work with. I am very happy with Flatirons and pissed with SOA at this point.
Keep in mind that that there are limitations on what Mark and his staff can do. Lets not put pressure on them for the faults of others. It is great that they are here.
It seems that SOA moves slowly. It took over a year for the recall on the parking issue. Logging issues with SOA and NHTSA may help.

OK, let me back up here. My primary source of frustration over this whole series of events has nothing to do with Bret or Flatirons. If that was not clear, then let me make it clear. Bret is a helluva guy and I appreciate what he does for the Subaru community.
HOWEVER..... IT IS UNJUST that someone like Nate who has not abused his car and has no crazy mods can have to go get a completely rebuilt tranny etc. because someone from SOA swoops through and says "boost controller, no warranty for you." That is crap. total crap. Bret never said any of that stuff to me, he said it to Nate. If Nate wants to come in here and defend himself he can. I tend to be more outspoken that he is, but I dont think he is ANY less irritated with this than I am. I dont think the stuff Bret said was in confidence. I certainly would not repeat something like that, but I dont think it was. If it was, I apologize for "exposing" it but thats the way it is - out in the open now.
Yeah, youre right I did choose to modify my car and that has nothing to do with this. I already said I was planning to PAY to get work done on my car, in fairness of business. This dosent have anything to do with me or with Flatirons, it has to do with Nate getting hosed on his transmission because someone saw a modification at the wrong time at the wrong place. Sounds like a call to SEMA.
So, if this sounds like a rant, thats partially because it is. It fumes me that Nate had to get an entire new transmission when some other people have got -similar- treatments for nothing.
Sorry if you dont agree, you are entitled to your opinion. But, dont try to make it sound like I am the bad guy here. I was just sticking up for someone I think got the shaft, BUT NOT by Bret or Flatirons, but by SUBARU. If you want to get in someones face, get in Nates - hes the one that got the $1000 bill for something that probably should have been warranty work.
 back at ya baby....
JaMa
wrxnate 02-02-2003, 04:51 PM Bret just told me that this is an inherient problem with the SUbaru 5spd, he has even seen the normally aspirated cars do this same thing. He did tell me "The 5spd is a ticking time bomb" and this is why he changed to dog gears immediatly......no seceret there. My only point is that I am not the first to have this failure and SOA denied me coverage because they saw my MBC. and blamed it on me.

I think this is the "particular" difference and point in question though. Nate's tranny had gears with missing/stripped teeth while the "other people" have gotten warranty work done to their transmissions when things like the synchros were going out, me being one of those people, and their gears were fine.
That's all i wanted to add to this post .
David,
Thats a good point man. I believe Nates transmission was defective from the factory and that is EXACTLY the point Ive been trying to make here all along. He had what I believe was a legitimate factory claim to warranty work and someone denied him for something stupid which probably had nothing to do with the problem.
Is this fair? I dont think so.
JaMa
WRX Harvey 02-02-2003, 05:55 PM That sux Nate. Not to bring this back on point here. I do feel for Nate. But the point is that Flatirons is by far the best Dealership around whether or not your car is modded. I wish that they could keep the SOA guys out of the bays but I don't think that will happen. Maybe we can help train their service guys on how to do some sleight of hand or psychological misdirection (Black Ops). Or we can steal some of the building materials from the new Acura side and build a secret dyno bay out back that locks down when SOA guys are near. Just Kidding.
This thread seems to have become more about the unfortunate nature of SOA and Nate. I'm sure that Mark and Bret did everything possible to help Nate with his lemon. So once again I gotta say.
HOORAY FOR FLATIRONS!!!!
I must say that I at times have felt like sneaking in to talk to Bret or Troy and not telling the guys behind the service counter anything about my mods. Warranty Fear. But I am so excited by Mark telling us that he supports the tuning community. With everyone on the same page I am sure we'll see more people approaching Mark and Troy with inquiries. Feeling not at all guilty about bringing in your modded WRX for an oil change. The paranoiac in me previously worried the service guys might take note of mods for warranty denial at some point, but I see that this was never the case. I promise to never go to the Grease Monkey again. I always checked my drainplug and dipstick anyhow.
I will be buying a Turbo Forester at some point in my mythical future life, as well as a set of (stronger) MRT drag or roadracing gears from Flatirons as they have a relationship with Mr. Middleton down under. Great prices and Stellar service guys.
Thanks, Mark for starting this thread and showing support for us.
But Flatirons really is an excellent dealership. My wife purchased her Legacy Outback from another dealership some time ago. Since Flatirons is close, we have always taken it there for service and have been incredibly impressed with them. At one time, she was stranded due to a blown belt (early, snowy morning) and they came out and picked her and the car up, provided a loaner, and had the car ready the next day -- all at an extremely reasonable price.
So, the time had finally come for me to part with the S4 (nogaro blue) and the WRX had my nod. The entire purchase experience was perfect, with no pressure whatsoever (somewhat annoying actually .. I needed just a little nudging :) ), and a good deal on both sides.
Six or so months later I get the urge to upgrade the car, so I go speak with my original sales rep (John Baron - one of the best reps I have ever dealt with!) who points me to Troy, who answers all of my questions. I placed my order shortly after that.
Of course, it has been a while since the order, and still no parts (aside from wheels), but I am patient. I am sure it will be worth it. Although I do hope the poor person who is carrying my exhaust from Oz makes it through the snow. I mean, there must be a person carrying it, given the amount of time it is taking to get here. MarkW@Flatirons 02-03-2003, 04:20 PM WOW!! I don't check in for a couple of days.....I will probably say it till you guys are tired of hearing it but thanks again for all the praise. I am glad to see "some" of the fears fading about coming to a dealership and I am glad that you guys are choosing Flatirons. Nate, again, sorry. Hold on to ALL your invoices. Brad, don't be too patient, call and harass Troy :D . I was also wondering how many of your might be interested in a meet and greet/show/bragging day here. For example..some Saturday (reps don't work on the weekends) I could have the used car pad cleared off and all you proud owners could display, meet other members and myself. Please post if you would be interested and I can see what else I can arrange (i.e. food, prizes). Again, let me know if there is anything I can do.
Thanks,
Mark (303) 402-5155
wrxlvr 02-03-2003, 04:51 PM You just said the magic words.
1. Food
2. Prizes
Set it up and I'm sure you'll have a good turnout.

MarkW@Flatirons 02-04-2003, 07:57 PM Allright. Things I have in process for meet. Food (getting est. from traveling hot dog salesman). Some door type prizes have already been decided on. Contemplating a show type system where you guys vote on which cars you like best for a 1st-3rd placing with prizes and maybe even trophies. Still trying to figure out a date, but will be a Saturday. If you guys have any ideas of anything else that would be of interest (within reason of course) please post them soon so that I can try to get additional things arranged.

So, if this sounds like a rant, thats partially because it is.
Your rants are just as welcome here as anyone else's. Even your newly formed bad-attitude is. But perhaps a thread of praise about Flatirons is not the best place for it...especially since you have no problems with the service there.
Cheers!

MarkW@Flatirons 02-05-2003, 11:15 AM Rexwell,
I do very much appreciate your praise and defense of Flatirons and I hope that your high regards continue. However, I did not start this thread to merely here about how great I am (it is nice though :D ). Jama and Nate have points that I need to hear and know about so that I can monitor conditions with these vehicles. Now, I do agree that perhaps they are continuing to voice their opinion a little too much on the subject, but that is their right and I will continue to read it and continue to help where I can (which currently isn't much). I started this thread with a "here I am, hit me with watcha got" theory so that I could better understand and try to assist in impreza owners concerns and problems. So far I have recieved some good feed back and a very good sense that you all appreciate this. I guess what I am pretty much trying to say is that while I definately appreciate the praise and hope that I continue to see/read it, I also need to see/read the negative things so that I know where my support is needed.
Thank You,
Mark
P.S. by the way Rex, I am very glad that you are on my side!:D
RK Performance 02-06-2003, 02:52 PM Count me in for a meet!
And count me in for an alignment! Troy MADE me by some Prodrive springs, so now I have to get the Prodrive specs dialed in. You guys willing to do that, and how much?

OK, I think I speak for both myself and Nate when I say that this is not about Flatirons as a dealership, but more about how Subaru treated Nate. We ARE on your side Mark - I dont know how you got the idea we were not.
I dont know that we said anything here that was not true, either. Look at it this way..... Nates transmission died in Aurora, while he was on his way to my house. Flatirons is over 50 miles away, way on the other side of Denver. Shortline, John Elway, Burt and the dealer on 104th are ALL closer and in fact Subaru roadside assistance I believe wanted to take his car to one of those dealerships. However, because we both have a great deal of confidence in Bret and Flatirons, we had the car towed all the way to Boulder. The tow alone cost Nate big bucks. Then, the most unfortunate thing in the world happened. Nate was in the wrong place at the wrong time and had to repair his car out of his own pocket.
Is this Flatirons fault? No way. Never implied that it was.
But, this board and others like it are absolutely the right place to voice problems like this so that other owners, the dealership and the company itself are aware of it.
Sorry if anyone got the idea that I was picking on Flatirons, because thats not the deal at all.
JaMa
Rexwell: Please dont take things out of context. I dont think you really know the whole situation and all the details.

MarkW@Flatirons 02-06-2003, 07:02 PM Jama and Nate,
I was not saying that you guys are against us. I was kidding with Rexwell about him being on my side because of his vocalism.(i.e better to have him with us then against us). Sorry if it was taken wrong. I was actually defending and requesting hearing ALL complaints/promblems.
Thanks,

Rexwell 02-06-2003, 09:12 PM Hi Folks...
This thread is causing me undo stress!
Here comes one way-too-long megapost, please forgive me.
Let me just start by saying that I do indeed empathize with wrxate and his situation.
I believe that the 2002 WRX transmission was engineered less than perfectly. I make this judgement based on my driving experience with the car - sounds and feel. I am by no means a technical expert on transmissions.
It is highly likely that wrxnate is an unfortunate vicitm of this less-than-perfect design. I also believe that wrxnate was well aware of the risks he was taking by modifying his car.
Subaru would not be wise to repair every bum transmission on every modded-out WRX...they simply wouldn't survive as a profit-earning business. None of us (except for JaMa maybe) would be able to afford Subarus if they made a practice out of this.
Personally I'm glad that dealers are turning away some folks....we all know that there are kids out there abusing these cars and in many cases getting fixes under warranty. This situation is a lose-lose for everyone involved but the kid having fun, and he probably didn't even pay for the car in the first place! (Believe me, I've been there - smoking out the clutch nice and hard in mom's 90 DSM turbo when it was brand newish.)
The only problem I'm having is with a certain someone who went from holier-than-thou WRX enthusiast to holier-than-thou troll in like a matter of weeks.
Don't brag about your darn Volvo or AMG or financial status in here - we don't want to hear about it!!
JaMa you march into MY Subaru 'house' and in one day call the STi I'm dying/saving for a 'rattle-trap' and also rain on our Flatirons parade. Where do you get off dude??!
I challenge you to a Sumo suit wrestling match or something dammit.
:alien:
Otherwise I will be forced to work with the moderators here and develop a way to make your presence on this board invisible to me so that I might continue to enjoy my visits to nasioc.
Wow I feel better now...but I need a drink and a cigarette.
Cheers!

I disagree with Jama, the car is not a rattle trap, the only rattles I have are my half assed speaker install  and my guage pod. Hell my wifes WRX was wrecked into a pine tree on a test drive, and it rattles less than any VW I have EVER owned. I have had 8 GTIs and 4 bugs......so I do know what I am talking about.
I am just dissapointed that SOA did'nt just raise the sticker 1-2k and give it a 6spd.
Cheers,
Nate

Are you listening to yourself? Youre getting wack over a car, an inanimate object. And by the way, what have I said that was not true?
Otherwise I will be forced to work with the moderators here and develop a way to make your presence on this board invisible to me so that I might continue to enjoy my visits to nasioc.

Just keep something in mind: The truth hurts. If you cant take it, dont listen. Its called freedom of speech folks, and this is one of those situations where people obviously dont want to hear the hard truth, like it or not. If you post a reply, dont bother posting it to me - I am out of here.

Rexwell 02-07-2003, 10:06 AM Yay!
BTW I believe the proper spelling is "whack."
The truth does sometimes hurt and I'm all for it. Perhaps what you aren't seeing here is that YOUR truth is not necessarily everyone else's truth.
The fact is you are annoying more folks than just myself. Take your own advice and if you don't like it, don't read it. It looks like you've already decided to do just that. Great.
Have a wonderful life - that is, at least after you sell your Subaru.
Where's the little trunkmonkey icon when I want it?

COwannago 02-07-2003, 11:46 AM Rexwell, the way you are presenting yourself currently is far from cool. Rejoicing in members leaving and with an arrogance you all but accuse Jama of having. Frankly I would rather not see you post than Jama.

Can we please get back on topic? NOW.

MarkW@Flatirons 02-18-2003, 03:52 PM So far here is what we have. April 12th (Saturday) is the date. Hot Dogs and drinks for up to 200 people arranged (11am-3pm apx). Do you guys want to do the "you vote" show with prizes for 1st-3rd place? There will be some little door prize things (havn't been determined quite yet). I was thinking along a time line of about 10am-5pm or so. Do the drawing/count up the votes at around 3pm. If there is anything else of interest you guys can think of please post. Let me know what you think.
Thanks,

MarkW@Flatirons 02-18-2003, 05:27 PM We are going to be clearing most of our used car and some of our new Acura cars out of the way for us to park. We also have some road side (not on Arapahoe) parking and a large back lot for vehicles not participating in the show. Oh, and for all the rally style car there is always the creek. So, there should be enough up front parking, but if not we do have overflow parking available.

TinyIvan 02-18-2003, 11:38 PM New to the area, so hello all!
I skimmed through this thread and gather that Flatirons is the place to be! I have a question for clarification though, will Flatirons install mods too, like anything from gage packages ECUs? Or is it that they're just friendly to you if you come in for service with that stuff installed?
Anyway, thanks for the info...

Timmay 02-19-2003, 03:11 PM Hey Guys,
You can count me in for the meet on the 12th. Hopefully by then it'll be nice enough to put my summer wheels back on...
I found a few free oil change coupons from Burt Subaru that I received when I bought my car or my wife's car. Since we live 10 minutes from FlatIrons, I have no use for them. If anybody wants them, send me an email and they're yours.
Mark/Bret - I'll be in Monday morning next week for some work on my WRX. I'd like to talk to one of your guys about any potential issues with installing STi lowering springs on my car (leaving everything else stock) and also what it might cost to have these installed.

C-daleRidr 02-20-2003, 11:10 AM Damn, I'll miss being around for the meet by a couple of weeks. Going to be up there for Spring Break the last week of March. Oh well, have a good time.
And, Mark, I PM'd you.
Rancid 02-20-2003, 01:06 PM Dirtiest car award?! Mark knows my car gets dirty...

MarkW@Flatirons 02-22-2003, 08:47 PM Sorry I haven't replied. Been gone a couple of days (wife had surgery) The prizes for the show aren't going to be anything super fancy (i.e no trannies). There are also going to be some little door prizes (so everybody gets a chance). Those as well won't be anything too fancy (keychains, decals, t-shirts that kinda stuff). Sorry there can't be BIG FANCY stuff for giveaways but hey, there will be hot dogs. I am glad to see the growing intrest in the meet. I think we should have a pretty good turn out and a pretty good time.
Thanks,
Mark
p.s Dolphin, you had better watch out for Rancid, he just might have you on that whole dirty car contest.:D Tim, Thanks for having you car serviced at Flatirons. Make sure to let me know when you come in on Monday and we'll get it all figured out.
Snow Rally 02-22-2003, 10:34 PM Mark, my best wishes to you for the health of your wife.
It's good to know of a local dealer to take my baby. I'm very anal about allowing someone else to put his hands on her (would you let someone else give your girlfriend a tuneup??) but I'll give you guys a try. (with the car, not my girl).
12th sounds great for a meet, now I have to try to finish my stereo in 6 weekends...
Erik
P.S. My vote is for no free food and a $10 raffle for an STi 6 speed trans installed.
ImprezaRS dot com 02-23-2003, 09:20 PM How about we raffle off 30 tries $75 each for a stage 1 turbo kit? Retail is $2599...

MAD REX 03-01-2003, 01:11 PM Hey Mark how much is the 2002 WRX 30k mile service?
MarkW@Flatirons 03-03-2003, 09:47 AM Full 30k runs $359.00++ (minus 10% for you guys/gals of course)
Thanks
Mark
MarkW@Flatirons 03-03-2003, 03:33 PM Rancid,
I just wanted you to know that I got your survey back from Subaru and I thank you very much for the kind words. Let me know if you need any thing else. Again, Thanks
THank You,
Mark
Rancid 03-03-2003, 07:14 PM Of course Mark. Also, those trim pieces that go around the door handle...how much are those?
MarkW@Flatirons 03-04-2003, 09:08 AM The inside handles? All of them? Out of curiosity, what happened to your existing ones?
Thanks,
Mark
Rancid 03-04-2003, 09:30 AM Its two trim pieces. The broke when I pulled the door off (they are impossible to get off before taking it off).
You're into work early! I'm getting ready to go snowboarding and you've already posted!
occhy 03-04-2003, 01:41 PM Mark,
I have an app. with Bret on the 12th to install my mrt cai. Is the 10% off labor still in affect? If so do I tell the cashier I am in I-Cub to get the discount. My app. is at 1:00 p.m. Wed, 12th. I would love to meet you.
Thanks,
Matt
Boomslang2000 03-04-2003, 05:37 PM Man, almost missed the post about the meet (man that would have SUCKED). Someone may want to make a new thread with a sticky. Just a thought
On a side note, I bought my WRX from a dealer that sponsored a meet this last year, so if upper-managment needs any incouragement in the future...
Thanks and see you all on the 12th
Boomslang
MarkW@Flatirons 03-04-2003, 07:23 PM Ian,
Man...I am way tooo stooopid to know which pieces you are talking about. I am going to be here tomorrow until noon and then I am off to Vegas for the weekend (i know, poor me) so if you can stop by in the morning so I can check it out or call me and descirbe it to me over the phone. Sorry about being an idiot at times but hey...nobody's perfect.
Matt,
As you read I will be gone on Wed. but I have instructed Dustin Westwood (a service advisor) to honor the 10% off labor so you just need to ask for him when you come in and remind him you are from NASIOC and he will take care of it.
Boomslang,
You are right. I will make a new post and hopefully someone will make it sticky. I was hoping that this one might stay sticky too though. Do any of you guys know how I have that done?? I don't want to lose the information/posts I am getting/recieving from here.
Thanks all,
Mark
Rancid 03-04-2003, 10:19 PM No worries Mark, I'll be fine with out them for a bit :)
MAD REX 03-05-2003, 07:19 PM Hey Mark would you guys install one step colder spark plugs on the 30k mile service?
Is that a part you guys carry or would I have to buy my own?
SubeTek 03-05-2003, 10:54 PM Louis- we can install the plugs, it would probably be more cost effective if you purchased them. We can get them if you'd like-let me know.
Bret
MAD REX 03-06-2003, 01:00 AM Bret I still need my uppipe leak silenced :(
I'll give ya a call next week
T-WRX450 03-06-2003, 04:15 PM Louis,
I got the BKR7ES-11 here in stock. You may have to hunt around for them because I eventually had to special order them from them from NGK. Just let me know.
Ian,
I looked up the parts for the handle surround and I just want to be sure I was looking up the correct parts. If you could give me a call, I'll see what I can do.

Thanks Troy, is that the part number for platinium or iridium?
T-WRX450 03-07-2003, 09:07 PM Louis,
That is the number for the standard NGK Resistor spark plug, although I'm not sure if they make a platinum or iridium plug for that number. Here is the PDF for NGK's part numbers:

Fuquad 03-07-2003, 09:15 PM Troy,
It's Matt. I recently bought some Prodrive springs from you for my WRX. I haven't had them installed yet, as I was waiting to get my Stage 0 from Vishnu and do it all at once. Since they aren't having any luck getting me a core, I was thinking about going ahead with the spring install.
One question, though. With the Prodirive springs, should I replace the struts as well? I know you said that the Whitelines wouldn't have required that, but since I got these instead I just thought I'd ask.
Thanks!
Matt

Thanks

SubeTek 03-07-2003, 11:44 PM Matt,
As for strut replacement with the Prodrive springs i'd say absolutely not. The spring rates are the best matched to the factory strut i've ever had the priviledge of installing. This setup would be my choice if i owned a WRX and is a far better choice than all the overpriced coilovers out there. I'll give you a call tomorrow-or feel free to call me at work in the afternoon.
Bret

Wow, thanks for the reply. I was thinking that was what Troy told me, but I just wanted to make sure.
I'll leave you alone at work tomorrow so you can make some money. You don't need me bugging you there. I'll talk to you tomorrow evening. Call anytime.
Thanks again!
Matt
T-WRX450 03-08-2003, 01:38 PM Matt,
There you have it... The Master has spoken. Ladies and Gentlemen, Bret has left the building.
Also, I'll see if I can do something with Vishnu on the core.

Thanks, Troy. My Stage 0 is all paid for, but the guy I'm talking to at Vishnu says he has all 10 of his cores out and no one is sending them back. I would just send mine in preimptively to get it remapped, but I can't have my car out of commission that long. You wouldn't happen to have a loaner ECU sitting around we could pop in my car so I could send mine in to Vishnu, would ya? :)
Thanks again!

joefocker20 03-09-2003, 04:25 AM Bret,
Quick question. How much would you charge to install Cobb Street Performer Cams?
SubeTek 03-09-2003, 10:56 PM Give me a call on the cam install. We'll work something out.
Bret
MarkW@Flatirons 03-12-2003, 06:47 PM Man.....Every time Bret posts something a looooooooong time seems to pass before anybody else posts again. I vote to have Bret silenced! j/k you know I love you baby! Does seem to hold some truth though...............
Thanks,
Mark
Rancid 03-12-2003, 06:49 PM So...how was the Vegas trip Mark? (was that last weekend or one before last?)

It shouldn't cost any more than an arm and a leg, or two thumbs and an eye!
joefocker20 03-12-2003, 10:25 PM Well, thats cheaper than the price of a new shortblock if I did it:lol:
Rancid 03-14-2003, 11:31 AM How much is a single DIN pocket? Thanks...
IAn
MarkW@Flatirons 03-14-2003, 04:05 PM They don't show a pocket for the WRX's but we think (I know thats a strech) That the regular din pocket should work fine. Runs about $30.00.
Thanks,
Mark
hoodwho 03-15-2003, 09:27 PM same pocket for 98-01 RS's... I know that fits.... dunno the price... I paid $20 couple years ago..

Fuquad 03-18-2003, 02:21 AM Well, I guess since I am coming up there to get my springs / sway bar installed this Wednesday (March 19th), I'd better ask about this NASIOC.com labor discount...
So. What's the deal with that discount, eh?
MarkW@Flatirons 03-18-2003, 02:13 PM 10% off of labor....just gotta let me know you are here...see ya Wednesday.
Thanks,
Mark

Um, yeah, so much for the Wednesday install. Just got dug out and power JUST NOW got turned back on at my house. I'll reschedule w/ Bret tomorrow. Thanks!!
Fuquad 03-23-2003, 12:43 AM Looks like my install will be this upcoming Thursday (3/27), barring any ridiulous snowfall. So, if all is well, I'll see you guys Thursday!
MarkW@Flatirons 03-24-2003, 10:35 AM Sounds good.
Thanks,
Mark
Fuquad 03-27-2003, 09:06 PM Came in today, got my springs and stuff installed. Great work! I am really digging it so far! Bret and the rest of service did an outstanding job. Thanks for the NASIOC.com discount, as well! See you guys April 12th.
