View Full Version : I know this sounds stupid but..
SubaruImpreza_power 01-24-2003, 10:46 PM Ok you know the Wrx has that wonderful "boxer" sound.. Is it amplified by the Exaust or because it's a 2.0L engine? I never heard a 2.2L sedan with the type sound the Wrx makes.. And if it's not dependent on the engine size I guess changing the exaust will get you that sound?
Kostamojen 01-25-2003, 04:31 AM I think the N/A Impreza's sound better... WRX's you hear alot of the turbo and less of the engine.

SubaruImpreza_power 01-25-2003, 09:45 AM Here in Norwalk I was behind a Black Wrx with the turbo and I had to admit it sounded real good :D LOL I got my mom into the Subaru so now she can spot one faster and can hear one now.. LOL funny thing was one day when she saw a ricey car going down the street making a loud sound going down the street... My mom asks me "Are they trying to copy the sound of the Subaru?" lol I could not help but laugh.
SubaruImpreza_power 01-31-2003, 10:10 PM How does the Stromung sound on the 2.2L? it sounds good a low Rpm's but it seems from video's and whatnot it gets a little raspy at a higher rpm..
AustinSTi 02-01-2003, 10:01 PM you should hear the scoobies in england!!! they are straight up sick
jdmimpreza 02-02-2003, 10:41 AM I have a 2.5L turbo and it has 3inch exhaust turbo back, Very quiet untill you step on it. You hear the the turbo death whine and the very nice sounding 2.5 motor roar.

hah nice! are you using the stock Exhaust headers?
Eric SS 02-03-2003, 08:21 PM Personally, I don't like the sound of the WRX's with exhaust. Every time I hear one I think it's running on 3 cylinders...

I'm not sure about the SPT, but almost every aftermarket mufller I have heard makes them sound this way.

RaceCarRiot 02-04-2003, 06:25 PM put headers on the car... :D
then you'll have the lovely offbeat turbo boxer sound, plus the cool ripping drone they make under engine braking...
plus the cool frankenstein roar the n/a engines make once you at least get rid of the intake silencer.

lol excuse the newbieness.. do you mean the intake or Exaust headers? heh I would love to hear how it sounds with the intake silencer off :)
RaceCarRiot 02-06-2003, 10:44 AM the intake silencer is in the fender...frees up a couple hp.
yep, i meant exhaust headers...isrperformance.com might still have them on sale for $295/shipped. :)

There is no header on an intake. Headers refers to an exhaust piece. :)

tuffsubaru 02-06-2003, 11:38 AM i like the RS that can smoke check the WRX....
thats when N/A is more awesome sounding.

  I should of known that after going to all those drag races with my cousin.
SubaruImpreza_power 02-06-2003, 04:19 PM I have a question... what is a Cat back used for? From what I seen and heard it's much louder..
SubaruImpreza_power 02-06-2003, 11:06 PM lol looking at Cobb's tuning site I found this..
"STAINLESS STEEL HEADER SYSTEM
The stock Subaru headers are extremely restrictive and clearly built to save costs, not make power. To remedy this design flaw, we offer the Borla Stainless steel headers. These headers feature nice, smooth mandrel bends with a much more effective layout which improves mid and high RPM torque and power. Not only do you gain performance but you also get the “boxer” sound the Subarus are famous for. This will transform the sound of the car under acceleration from a docile purr to a menacing rumble that sounds unlike any 4 cylinder engine you’ve ever heard. Sound quality at idle and cruise is increased only slightly."
Heh going to check out that Borla header then.. isrperformance.com has them for a good price $295
Here is another question.. How easy is it to change it? I mean.. will my hands be cut up from working in tight spaces? or should I be ok? I'm sure the Forester 2.5XS and the 2.2L engine layout is just about the same.
Kostamojen 02-07-2003, 02:34 AM Borla's will bolt up the forester as well, nice and burbly... But you do need something done to catback (which refers to the midpipe and muffler) to hear it.
Oh, and the headers are easy to change, probably very easy with a forester due to the rideheight. Its only 8 bolts to do the swap, but its generally easier to disconnect the midpipe from the cats and take off the headers and cats and reconnect the borla header to the cats while its off the car. Its easier than it sounds.
Takashi 02-07-2003, 02:35 AM you know, i used to have a 2.5" tanabe hyper medallion cat-back on my rs and it sounded amazing... a bit on the loud side, but not at all like a lawn mower (translation: not obnoxious). it had a deep drone to it that had a sound like no other.
SubaruImpreza_power 02-07-2003, 03:26 AM I'm 100% sure the Forester 2.5XS has the dual port headers.. I don't know about the 2.2L yet.. it seems like they changed to a Dual port a little later in the years..
From what I thought.. All I needed to do was take the bolts out that hold the Headers onto the engine.. and then the ones on the Cat.... and then just bolt on the new ones. is that right?
Kostamojen 02-07-2003, 03:34 AM Took me awhile, but heres a thread on installing borla headers: http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=236584
Darby 02-07-2003, 10:09 AM you're in Norwalk SubaruImpreza_Power? i'm right next to Danbury, i'm selling my Borla headers, they are brand new in the box, for the single port 2.2. Installation is fast and easy. You'll want to get new gaskets as well. You might want to think about getting a freer flowing cat as well, otherwise the headers will be pointless. Opening up the exhaust, just to restrict it again....in my opinion, your best bet is opening up the exhaust from the rear forward unless you do it all at once.

I would do it all at once.. But were do you get the gaskets from? Now you said it would be better to open up the exhaust from the rear forward.. So that mean the stromung Dual Tip would be pointless with the Borla headers as well?
Oh and yeah I'm in Norwalk as well.. hey.. I saw a Red 2.2L Sedan last Sunday not far from Toy r us.. I got off one of the Exits to get on I-95 south but the person in the Red 2.2 was getting off at the next exit I think... The license plate ends with "MLM"

You get the gaskets from Subaru or from a mechanic/exhaust shop (bring in the pipes to get fitted if you don't know what you need).
What I meant by doing it rear forward is if you're piecing your exhaust set-up together over time. To have the exhaust open up right from the headers just to be restricted at the cat and opened again makes no sense really. Adds stress in my mind, spend another $100 and get a high flow cat. Exhaust piping that is all the same size runs better, sounds better, and is more efficient.
With the stromung, are you getting a cat-back (mid-pipe + muffler) or just the muffler?
I put mine in cat-back(+hardened exhaust hangers) 1st, 2 weeks later Cobb's high flow cat, week thereafter -Borla headers. I did it that way so i didn't kill myself financially, you can put it all in at once if you want of course.
"MLM" wasn't me if that's what you're talking about, i've got a red coupe
-hope that stuff helps you somewhat

Intermediate Pipe is another word for Mid-pipe correct?
I'm looking at the Stromung here.. http://www.isrperformance.com/exhaust.html
So I would need the Headers $295+Rear Muffler Dual Tip Stainless Steel $449.00+Intermediate Pipe, 2.5 inch $159.00 and it should be good and better then the way i was going to do before right?
I can't do all at once I just checked.. a little too high.
oh and yea it was a red Coupe
;)
Darby 02-07-2003, 12:40 PM yeah, mid-pipe=intermediate pipe.
just curious, why are you so gung-ho on Stromung? They're good but pricey...You can get a complete cat-back for the price of just the muffler. I think it'd be in your best interest to shop around, ISR is kind pricey as well plus it'll be shipping from California. You can save money on used parts, my cat-back was purchased used and is as good as can be. -Just trying to save you some cash.
This is what's on mine:
-Kartboy exhaust hangers
-2.2 Borla header
-Cobb High-flow cat
-Brospeed Cat-back (i wanted it to be more quiet than crazy loud like all the rice boys in my town)
-new gaskets
All together it cost me about $750-800
btw, did you get your impreza yet? what'd you go with?
(oh, the reason i keep emphasizing a freer flowing cat is because you'll create a "bottle-neck" with the air flow. You'd be better off just doing the cat-back, then later on upgrade your cat, then do the headers. That'll spread out your purchases making it easier to get the stuff and you'll be able to better feel the gains your car is producing. )

Nope I have not gotten it yet.. If I'm really lucky we could get both cars the same day.. But it's very unlucky that they would have a 5-Speed.. And my mom is trying to make me feel bad about getting the maunal..... We have to sell the house so migh as well get a new car as it's on it's last legs.. I'm just waiting for the people to hand the check over and the whoever person takes the XXX amount of money out to pay the Bill colletors and get them out the way then have the left over money..
Anyway... I don't know why Stromung... I like the Dual tip over the single one.. I don't like the buzzy ricey sound.. I just want a mellow sounding car amplifying the boxer sound at a low rpm :)
Darby 02-07-2003, 01:27 PM 5speed = fun
SubaruImpreza_power 02-07-2003, 01:44 PM I found a Website For Subaru Boxer sounds.. with aftermarket Exausts.. the page is in Japanese but most of them are in Mp3 format and Real Media.. I played the one of the Legacy B4.. If I could get the 2.2L to sound like that and without the poping when letting off the throttle that would be great! I see it has a Catback on it..

The Stromung dual tip was my favorite sounding N/A Impreza exhaust, until I heard the magnaflow single tip muffler :p Alot cheaper too, probably around 200-300 for a catback instead of 500 for the stromung catback, and possibly better performance.

No link, just call your local custom muffler shop and ask if they carry magnaflow. The specific muffler type you need is the 2.25" center/offset box, as seen in this thread along with more info about it: http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=309006&highlight=magnaflow
