Well, the foglights changed in 1999

OBD-II was a government mandate that started in 1996.

Not sure about the hood though. I didn't know it changed

The hood and headlights changed after 97. That it to say the 98's were the first to have the new design.

Or maybe the design change was new in 97....one of those two years though.

1998 the new air damn appears on the RS, round fogs start, clear headlight lenses

Headlights, grille, and hood changed from '96 to '97, OBDII was introduced on '95 2.2s.

I just meant on the Impreza in general, not the RS specifically. The headlights changed and the hood had a small change in contour, they were small changes that many wouldn't even notice. So the general consensus is '96 for OBD-II and '97 for the slight cosmetic changes to the hood and lights. Thanks so far, anyone else have some solid input.

OBDII appeared in 1995 2.2l/AT drivetrain in both Legacy and Impreza, and by '96 on all models.

Add: the main cosmetic change was in '97, not in '98. One style of hood is interchangeable among 1993-96, the other among 1997-2001.

Actually, 1998 was the first year of the RS and 99 was when the front end changed. close though :)

In a nut shell........

The hood:

'93 to '97 Impreza L - the hood was unchanged..... mainly flat.
'98 to '00 Impreza L - the hood added to long grove/bump type things....as seen on the RS and the front, middle part of hood has lip above the front grill
'98 to '01 Impreza RS - same as late L, the hood adds scoop, two vents, with the grove thing that passes through the two vents.

Lights:

'93 to '97 Impreza L - head lights are almost square and sideways length shorter. Corners dont reach as far back on the fender.
'98 to '01 Impreza L & RS - headlights take shape, curving down towards the middle of the car and lenses are more crystal clear. Corners reach a little farther back on the fender and have push out bump where the orange reflector goes.
