View Full Version : GB for DOT compliant 4pot BBK that fits the OE 16x6.5" wheels!
iON Performance Inc 01-29-2003, 04:53 PM These brakes fit all Imprezas, Legacys and Foresters equpped with OEM 16x6.5" wheels.
These are the largest DOT compliant 4pot/rotor combo that will fit underneath your stock 16x6.5" wheels! So instead of going with a larger BBK which requires new wheels and tires, you can save your OE wheels for track rubber or for winter use. :)

subysouth 01-30-2003, 12:19 PM What happened to the other BBK you were offering? Is this the same one? You hadnt mentioned the caliper manufacturer before?!?
Tanx

iON Performance Inc 01-30-2003, 07:45 PM subysouth - this specific brake kit was designed as an "advancement" to the last one, as the calipers used now have dust seals.
As well, rotors are now 0.98" thick vs. 0.81" in the older kit. Not to mention, the directionally vented rotors were optional on the previous kit, whereas these are standard. X-drilling or Slotting comes optional @ no extra charge, whereas the previous kit was extra.
This brake kit is fully DOT compliant, whereas all the other kits on the market (ie: Wilwood, etc) are not. This new kit also comes with Ferrodo Sport pads vs. the Hawk HPS, and also includes AP Racing fluid and F&R SS brake lines :)
As an additional bonus, the total weight of the BBK drops another 2.0lbs :) vs. the other BBK
rs-scooby 01-30-2003, 09:07 PM Hello
I am interested in this kit but do you have any pictures of it?
Thanks
Ryan
iON Performance Inc 01-30-2003, 11:58 PM rs-scooby - pictures posted. Note that the full kit shown is the full blown race version using a 13.5" rotor, and requiring minimum of 17" wheels.
The 2-piece rotor shown is one for the Dodge Viper, shown w/ optional slotting.
Redline8k 01-31-2003, 03:50 AM Do you have to rebuild these if they are used in the snow and salt? I live in Chicago and need a all-weather system. I know some of the other system on the market needed to be rebuild after time. Just wondering.
thanks
-nick
omahasubaru 01-31-2003, 09:12 AM I think that is what he means by DOT compliant. They have dust seals thus no need for a regular rebuild.
I'm interested in this kit, but I'm in the process of changing cars. Once that's done I should in the market around March.
I must ask as I've been shopping for brake kits that would clear the OEM 16x7" wheels... How does your kit compare to the kit from Rallyspec? DO their calipers require a rebuild? I'm looking for a no service kit, just routine maintenence (pads, rotors, occasional re-bleed of the system).
Thanks - Jon
iON Performance Inc 01-31-2003, 11:58 AM Redline8k - eventually these will have to be rebuilt. However the frequency of requiring a rebuild would be similar to that of an OE caliper. So once every couple of years would be sufficient.
iON Performance Inc 01-31-2003, 02:08 PM omahasubaru - are you referring to the Subaru 4pot kit? If so, those will eventually require new seals as well.
Generally, if you use your brakes under extreme weather and load conditions really often, it's always a good idea to do a rebuild after 2-3 years, with a brake system flush once every 12 to 15months (depending on the fluid you use). Keeping your brake system healthy will be able to extend operating life as well as performance
Is there any testing on these brakes? I am courious as how much better these work.
iON Performance Inc 01-31-2003, 04:02 PM 128d - here's some imperical testing data.
The following data was collected under the following conditions:
(1) Vehicle tested - MY98 Legacy L w/ OE 16x6.5" wheels & RE92's.
(2) Conditions - ~10C (50F), clear sky, overcast, no wind
(3) Elevation is ~3/4 above sealevel
(4) Braking distance (stock) according to R&T is 136ft from 60mph (96.56km/h) *note this braking distance was measured on the GT, which is equiped w/ 2pots & 10.7" rotors up front. The "L" had a front GT brake conversion, and thus braking distances are shorter then it would be for a stock Legacy L*
Tests were done on a straight piece of road using light standards to measure distance. Each light standard is 10m (32.81ft) apart.
Vehicle was brought up to speed and cruise control set (to have a comparitive standard). Braking started at the same lamp standard which was marked.
(w/ ABS activated)
Baseline tests w/ OE 2pot brakes, OE pads, OE 10.7" rotors and AP Racing Dot 5.1 fluid. (average of 10 stops) *note brake fad started to occur ~ 6 stops into the test*
Stopping distance from 100km/h->0 (62mph->0) was recorded as ~142ft (43m)
Test after BBK installed: (average of 15 stops, note on slotted rotor version, no brake fade was felt)
Stopping distance from 100km/h->0 (62mph->0) was recorded at ~122ft (37m)
(w/ ABS switched off)
Stopping distance after the BBK was installed was ~110ft (33.5m)
*note this was an average of 10 runs*

BIGSKYWRX 02-02-2003, 11:25 PM Nice looking kit. AP Racing has a great reputation. What piston sizes? Also manufacturer of the rotors? Last question, are the Feroda pads the DS2500's.
Thanks.

Just saw the piston sizes above- Doh! Other two questions stand:)
Thanks
Big Sky
iON Performance Inc 02-03-2003, 03:44 AM BIGSKYWRX - the rotors are custom made here in Canada by KVR for us :) Yes the pads included in this kit are the Ferodo DS2500's

youthanasia 02-03-2003, 06:38 PM Will this kit fit the Speedline SuperTurismo ET55 17" wheel? I have trouble finding BBK's that fit under these. So far, I only found the Prodrive 330mm Alcon kit and the Brembo 328mm kit fits.
iON Performance Inc 02-03-2003, 07:11 PM omahasubaru - PM'd/email'd you :)
youthanasia - these should fit the Speedline Super T's w/ the +55mm offset. Reason is b/c it'll have the same maximum clearence of the stock wheels (16x6.5" that is).
iON Performance Inc 02-05-2003, 03:06 AM omahasubaru - just got confirmation that the calipers used on that kit have not dust seals. Also, no fluid is included, nor rear lines.

iON Performance Inc 02-05-2003, 03:07 PM We've up'd the specs again from our pre-production kit! :)
Instead of 300mm x 25mm rotors, we've upped the rotor size to 310mm x 25mm! :) All this without increasing the weight more then 1/4lbs! :)
So instead of 11.8" it's now 12.2" :)
iON Performance Inc 02-06-2003, 07:31 PM Very shortly we'll have a matching rear upgrade available too :) Projected price will be $300-$400US less then the fronts. Ofcourse w/ a GB even more :)
thebusiness999 02-06-2003, 08:11 PM [RANT MODE]
Life can be so cruel...There's this great GB for the ideal brake upgrade and my wallet is empty. AP calipers, fit under a 16" wheel, 2-pieces rotors, great weight savings.
This thing is perfect for anyone who wants both track and gravel duty out of their Impreza. It's adequate for the track days and canyon runs, while still being able to fit under the 16" wheels when you decide to go offroad.
ION, I don't know when I'll have the money, but when I do, you'll be getting a call!
[/RANT MODE]
:D
This may be the answer a lot of people have been looking for.
Do you have any pics of the kit installed? with and without a wheel on?
iON Performance Inc 02-07-2003, 12:41 AM thebusiness999 - well, that's too bad ;) however, if you want to be one of the people to help get the price down to the 25 person price, you could sign up... and perhaps use your CC via paypal to pay, as that'll allow you to have an extra 3 weeks or so :)
As mentioned, this kit is designed for maximum street performance with the ability to go on the track no probs :)
Dude - we never took any pics of the pre-production version with the 11.8" rotors, however in 2 weeks or so time, we'll finish up the production version with 12.2" rotors, and then we'll be taking some pics :)
The rears are currenty still in development :) Should be done shortly :)
rs-scooby 02-07-2003, 12:58 AM I really want this kit but I am afraid I wont be able to afford it unless it gets to the 25 people mark

I guess go ahead and put my name down pending 25 :-D

iON Performance Inc 02-13-2003, 02:52 AM chrislehr - the pics will soon be available. Waiting on the new 12.2" rotor, we had some pics of the 11.8" one from the pre-production kit :)
iON Performance Inc 02-13-2003, 02:54 AM OK guys, here's more info about our upcoming matching rear 2 pot upgrade:
- AP 2 pot calipers
- DOT compliant
- 2 piece vented rear rotors (size to be determined)
- retains stock parking brake mechanism

iON Performance Inc 02-15-2003, 08:43 AM Arnie - check your msgs. Would you like to be put down on the GB?
I'm having a heck of a time finding a nice brake kit that will fit 18" Rota Sub-Zero's. Any idea if these will fit? Assuming they will I may just be tempted to have my name added to the list! ;)
thebusiness999 02-15-2003, 04:43 PM Add it! add it! add it!
iON Performance Inc 02-15-2003, 05:13 PM RooK - they should clear the 18" Sub Zeros. If you have a stock wheel, use 2 rulers, one that is flat on the hub surface, then the other at the closest spoke position. Measure how much room you have, then if the Sub Zero's have equal or more room, then they will fit :)

iON Performance Inc 02-21-2003, 02:35 PM ronaldwrx - we're waiting for the rears to be completed and then will be doing photos of both together. The new 12.2" rotors will be ready early next week.
Arnie 02-22-2003, 12:18 AM Any estimates on the rear rotor size?
iON Performance Inc 02-24-2003, 05:11 PM Arnie - looks like the rear rotors will be 300mm (~11.8") :) so that's about 1.1" larger then stock
Arnie 02-24-2003, 07:24 PM !!!!! Very cool. I want these. Let's get some more people!

Thanks - Jon

Everyone is going to hate me. But you should all hate my boss like I do.
I've been given two weeks to find work with in the company or get "down sized". i.e. I have to go from manager to manager begging for work. Since I know that even if I do find something, it will most likely be temporary, I have been re-organizing my finances. I can no longer justify increasing my debt as planned with this GB.
Sorry, please take me off the list.
Anyone need a mechanical engineer with 8 years in the aerospace industry?
iON Performance Inc 03-17-2003, 07:25 PM mdot - no problem, we understand things can happen. However, would you like to be put on the "contingent" list? At least that way if we're close and you find another suitable job, then perhaps you can get these :)
Arnie 03-17-2003, 11:16 PM MDOT, stay on the list! It will certainly be some time before this group buy meets our ideal 25, more than enough time for all of us to save our pennies and for you to find a job. Out of the 44000 odd WRXs and North-Ursalia-knows how many RS, Legacy's, etc. sold; I'm sure we can get another 10 people interested! I'm patient.:p
thebusiness999 03-18-2003, 12:02 AM I myself am hoping this takes a few more months to fill. Like you Mdot, my financial situation has taken a turn for the worse...things should be better by the time we get 25 (I hope ;) )
I appreciate the support guys.
I was thinking too, that if it takes another month or two to get to 25, things will probably be better for me. But if they didn't and we hit 25, and I back out then, you would all hate me. So i figured it was more polite for me to bow out sooner than later.
I'm sending out resumes. So When I get a hit, I'll jump right back on list.
Thanks, and sorry, guys

thebusiness999 03-21-2003, 08:37 PM I have an MY02 WRX. I'd like slotted rotors :)
Arnie 03-22-2003, 01:52 AM Great news about the rotors!
02 WRX Wagon-slotted rotors please.
So how are you guys testing for proper brake bias for the calibration of the piston sizes? Is AP helping out there? And when are you getting us some pretty pics!:p

iON Performance Inc 03-22-2003, 03:11 PM Arnie - Yup, AP is helping out there. In addition to piston bore sizes, altering internal fluid channel sizes etc will affect brake bias :)
teiva-boy 03-22-2003, 04:32 PM So tempting, but so broke. Free bump for iON
turboICE 03-24-2003, 11:43 PM How much time until you close the group buy? I am thinking hard about this one.
What type of braking balance are you targetting with the front and rear combined relative to the stock balance? (forward, neutral, back?)
iON Performance Inc 03-25-2003, 12:00 AM jehcpa - Well this GB should end close to the end of April beginning of May. Might as well put yourself down on the list to help it get to 25 people :)
As for brake bias. With the front kits, we're slightly shifting bias rear-wards. It will be even more neutral with both F&R kits on.
turboICE 03-25-2003, 01:48 AM Thanks for taking the time to quickly respond to me both on and off the board. Very helpful.
The best I could go right now is contingent & pending 25.
The contingency is how much I am going to owe on my tax return.
If you are OK with contingent rather than committed for now -
MY 03 wagon, slotted (w/o cross drilling)
I will confirm well before the end of the GB 4/15 at the latest. LOL

also what makes these brakes better than the stop techs and willwood 6piston brake kits that r currently cheaper than thses??? r they not complete kits?
id prob go for the slotted on my02 if i decide to get on this

The great thing about this kit is just what is said in the thread Subject line - it fits under the OEM WRX 16" wheels. This is good news for folks that want to retain the stock look but want better and more consistent braking performance. The StopTech kit needs a 17" rim, and even then not all 17-inchers will work. They also don't have to upgrade to larger wheels and more expensive 17" or 18" tires, just a stickier tire upgrade at the stock size should be the one necessary upgrade to complete the brake package.

The components are at the start of this thread. I can't think of anything else you would need - looks complete.
Benefits,
Can use the stock 16" X 6.5" OEM wheels for winter / rally setups.
The first and only true 4-pot up-size upgrade for 6.5" OEM wheels.
Rebuild will be much less frequent than either of those kits.
Stop-tech doesn't offer a rear solution to keep brake bias properly balanced.

I really, really like this kit & the ability to fit not only WRX 16x6.5" wheels, but likely Legacy GT & Forester 16x6.5" wheels.
Thanks - Jon

To be fair to Stop Tech, the front BBK's they offer are properly balanced/biased with the stock rear brakes.
turboICE 03-26-2003, 10:30 PM My apoligizes (sp) if I mispoke. I certainly don't know from experience, but had read differently about many BBKs (this kit included and the writer happened to speak highly of, recommended and sold S-T). Maybe those comments were meant to induce the purchase of someone elses rear kit from the same vendor as well. I have personally experienced dramatic changes in bias on other vehicles when doing BBK on the front and found the statement credible. But again I have no personal experience with this BBK on this application to support my prior comment.
iON ...
I am assuming that this comes with sufficient fluid to replace and flush the entier system. noob question I am sure feel free to beat around the head and shoulders.
Also, are those DBA rotors, private label, or ...?
Bump.
iON Performance Inc 03-26-2003, 11:01 PM topgrinder - yes these are complete brake kits. The rotors are finally in (the casted part). So once we reach the magic # it shouldn't take more then 3 weeks tops to get them to everyone's doorstep (ofcourse depending on where you live shipping may take 1-4 days longer).
omahasubaru - there should be some pictures by the end of the week. It will be a picture of the kit bolted up to the suspension pieces on the "jig" with and without the stock wheel on. Yes this kit will clear the Legacy 16" wheels as well as the Forester ones :)
jehcpa - the rotors are made here in North America (actually in the US :) ) They're made by one of the manufacturing facilities that Brembo N/A uses as well, however they're a custom part # for us :) Yes there'll be enough brake fluid to replace the stock stuff. Just make sure whoever is doing the job doesn't waste any! *lol* :D
turboICE 03-26-2003, 11:09 PM I do it myself and waste not, want not! Thanks for your prompt replies.

iON Performance Inc 03-31-2003, 06:31 PM Update - We've negiotiated a new deal with AP Racing for the calipers. We can now provide the 25 person GB price at the 20 person levels! :) This means we're only 6 people away! :)

iON Performance Inc 04-03-2003, 02:37 PM jehcpa - We were going to take some pics of the assembled kits on Monday, unfortunately the rotors that came in were for our Mazda BBK's. Everything else is here, just waiting for the 12.2" rotors to arrive to finish assembling the new kit.
The rear hats are out being CNC fabricated right now. All the testing turned out great. It'll retain the stock parking brake mechanism.
turboICE 04-03-2003, 03:06 PM iON - Good to hear thanks for the response.
Baked Cookies welcome aboard - the 25 person pricing is now available at the 20 person level - so that is our new target! Let's get there.
bump.
imprezwrx 04-03-2003, 10:17 PM Damn it!!! If the price would've been in CDN $$$ I'd certainly would've jump in:mad: Or at least if the 1625$ meant that we got the rear kit as well as the front kit...
wr wagon 04-04-2003, 04:05 AM So what is the price if you want to do front and rears? Sounds like an interesting GB, price dependent, or course.
:)
turboICE 04-04-2003, 04:19 PM For those who don't read the thread. This group buy is for fronts only. Once we get to 20 peeps, the price is $1625 for the fronts.
They have started a list of those interested in the rears when they have been developed and put in production.
Originally posted by iON Performance Inc
Very shortly we'll have a matching rear upgrade available too :) Projected price will be $300-$400US less then the fronts. Ofcourse w/ a GB even more :)
Now of course hopefully - when the backs are available they don't do a group buy for front and back together that results in a lower price than when we buy the backs seperately after having been in this group buy. :)
iON - can you express your intent on how the back brakes will be priced for those that participated in this front group buy?
Thanx,
Ed.
wr wagon 04-04-2003, 07:38 PM Actually, I did read the thread. And whenever anyone asked about rear pricing, they either got the estimate you quoted or they got a PM about the price. Since some got a PM, I was asking if there was an actual, final price on the rears--especially since there are people on the "list" for them. I myself cannot commit to buying something of which I only know the ballpark price.
turboICE 04-04-2003, 10:34 PM Don't think I singled anyone out, several people asked about rear price. Since it is still in development I doubt one is available. I must have missed where a price on the rears had been PMed to others. Also my understanding is that everyone on the list for rears is price dependent - the rear list is not a commitment to my knowledge. Can't consider anyone commited when an offer has not been made and offer can't be made without a price.
iON Performance Inc 04-05-2003, 01:15 AM imprezwrx - that'd only cover the cost of the calipers and lines. That wouldn't account for the 2-piece rotors, shipping, fluid or anything else. If you were to pick up just a set of DBA 2-piece rotors that'd run close to $1000CAD.
wr wagon - the rears will come in a couple hundred less then the fronts. Since we still haven't finalized all details, we can't negiotiate w/ AP a better price yet for the rear calipers.
However, if you get in on the GB for the fronts, there will be a GB for the rears at a later date. And regardless, both will add up to the same price as if you got in on them together now.
jehcpa - When we do a GB for the rear kit, it will work out to be the same price if we were to set-up a GB for both right now as well. So regardless, it'll work out to the same price.
turboICE 04-06-2003, 08:10 PM Good to hear kind of figured you would! ;)
Bump - 6 more to go!
HabsaWRX 04-06-2003, 09:38 PM Hey I'm very intersted in this group buy. I was thinking about the Stoptech brake upgrade but they wouldn't fit under my 16 inch wheels I use in the winter. So just to make sure This will fit under my stock 16 inch wheels? I don't think there will be a problem under my 17 inch Subzeoros. Oh yah and this will work with a 2003 WRX and it's ABS?

iON Performance Inc 04-06-2003, 10:42 PM HabsaWRX - yes these will work on the MY02 & MY03's. They're designed to work with the space constraint of the OE 16x6.5" wheels. So any wheel that has at least the same inner constraints will work.
iON Performance Inc 04-07-2003, 07:09 PM Ok guys, we're nearing the 20 person mark. We're going to start taking deposits of 50% of the kits now. The other 50% will be due when the kits are ready to ship. Deposits are due in by April 23rd, 2003
We're going to base everything on the 20 person mark ($2437.50CAD shipped (~$1795US shipped @ today's exchange rate 05/06/03)).
Methods of payment are the following:
(1) Money Order, Wire Transfer, EFT (if you want to do it this way, please email us for more details -> info@ionperformance.com)
Deposit is $897.50US.
(2) Credit Card is only via Paypal (this is subject to a 5% charge) thus total via Paypal is $1706.25US shipped, so for the deposit it's be $942.38US. Our paypal ID -> Sales@ionperformance.com
*note paypal charges this 5% regardless of whether or not the funds are from CC*
We have the shipment of calipers coming from AP, and should arrive in Canada in ~4weeks-5weeks time tops. In the meantime, the rotors etc will all be assembled, so once the calipers arrive, the kits will ship.
Kyle Jones 04-07-2003, 08:06 PM Will a bank issued cashiers check mailed to IP work for you, if so how long do we have to get the money to you.
Thanks, Kyle
iON Performance Inc 04-07-2003, 08:12 PM Kyle Jones - yes a bank draft or a cashier's cheque works as well. We'd like to recieve all deposits no later then the 23rd of April, 2003. If you're choosing to send in a cheque etc. Please send it via USPS Priority post (3-5 day service). Otherwise, it could take up to 3 weeks time.
turboICE 04-07-2003, 08:26 PM Thank you for the info for mailing payment.
What is the cut-off date on this GB?
What will be the process if you don't get deposits on 20 by then?
What is our recourse if these are not shipping in "5 weeks time tops"?
All the reviews on iON are good, but there are not many and they are pretty old. And I don't want my "deposit" sitting out there for months.
I guess my point is I am looking for assurances this is not the typical group-buy, for example:
Extending the GB again and again.
Apologizing that the product has not been received yet, please be patient.
Again your reviews are good and if I had any reason to think this would happen I simply wouldn't be here. I guess I am looking for the terms of this GB and reassurance. :)
HabsaWRX 04-07-2003, 08:52 PM I might have mentioned that I have a place in both Countries. I understand that if you ship to Canada I will have to pay the lovelt GST tax. But if you ship to the US I will have to deal with customs, and pay the tax here in the U.S
What are your experices with customs in both countries?
iON Performance Inc 04-07-2003, 08:56 PM jehcpa - If by the time the calipers arrive from England (in about 4-5 weeks) there's not enough for 20 people (ie: if we're about 3-4 people off) we'll pick up the slack of the 3-4 kits.
The time frame is for the calipers to arrive from AP in England to us here in Canada. It will take about 5-7 business days to have the kits fully completed from the date the calipers arrive to us. We're going to try and partially assembled some of the stuff, so that you won't have to worry about any special tools to do so. Hence the slight delay from the arrival of the calipers.
We will be announcing when the kits will be ready, and as such, the people who first have their kits paid in full will have their kits sent out first.
iON Performance Inc 04-07-2003, 08:59 PM HabsaWRX - We're shipping out of Canada. These should be exempt under the NAFTA agreement, you won't really have to be concerned about customs/duties. We haven't had any trouble in regards to customs/duties for our previous GB's for rotors & pads etc.
turboICE 04-07-2003, 09:06 PM Thanks for being so responsive, you'll receive deposit in a few days.
And they definitely are exempt under NAFTA.
Duron 04-07-2003, 10:37 PM I'm interested. What will the price be in Canadian dollars and what will we have to pay in terms of taxes? PST and GST I would guess?
iON Performance Inc 04-07-2003, 11:07 PM Duron - the cost in Canadian is -> $2608.13 shipped w/ GST. If required, then PST maybe added as well. Deposit will be 1/2 of that, and remaining balance due when the kits are ready to ship.

turboICE 04-10-2003, 06:41 PM Sweet! Can't wait to see the directional slotted w/o the cross drilled.
Anyone know of a good caliper paint that is close to the WRBlue?
iON Performance Inc 04-10-2003, 10:02 PM jehcpa - These calipers we're using are not the older style where it's just a thermal enamel covering the surface. These are actually fully teflon coated on the whole surface of the caliper to maximize resistance to corrosion from debris etc.
You can try using caliper paint, not sure how well it'd stick though.
thebusiness999 04-10-2003, 11:03 PM Sorry guys, but i gotta drop out of this. I simply can't go any further into CC debt right now. I can afford the first half of the deposit, but not the second half coming in within a month. The worst part is I'll probably end up buying them next year at the normal price (I don't think I'll have the needed funds before then :( ) because I want them so bad.
If my situation some how changes before this buy is closed, I'll rejoin it. At this point, I'm looking for some more stuff to sell.
Have fun with the kits guys, I'm sure you'll love em.
Paul
iON Performance Inc 04-11-2003, 12:53 AM thebusiness999 - Paul, check your email. I think you'll be interested in reading it ;)
Arnie 04-11-2003, 02:16 AM nice pics. errgh, i knew i shouldn't have checked in on this.:(
iON Performance Inc 04-11-2003, 09:04 AM Arnie - hopefully you can join in w/ everyone else. Just let me know how the situation is. You've got till the 23rd for the deposit to get in.
iON Performance Inc 04-12-2003, 12:38 AM Since most people so far want the slotted rotor set-up. All the rotors will become slotted. This will speed up everything, as the rotors are directionally casted, and changing set-up between x-drilled and slotting takes alot of time up which could be better used to assemble the kits faster.
HabsaWRX 04-13-2003, 08:18 PM I guess you should get my money order by this thursday. I sent it via US comfirmed priority mail. To tell you the truth I'm a bit nervous about being ripped off. I have been ripped of before and my 2002 WRX was stolen in January. I replaced it with a 2003. So can you please send me some positive customer feedback. I would also like to use another email. mudflip@mac.com
Thanks.

I can understand your concerns, some GBs have been disasterous especially a few recent ones. I think if you give Jack a call and talk to him even for a little while I think you will realize quickly that his knowledge, abilities and business is for real. That is how I got comfortable with entering into this GB. He isn't going to risk his business on this. I also think you will find that his time tables for delivery and such are conservative rather than aggressive like most GBs.
And after this GB is finished we should all make sure to post reviews in the vendor section.

subarumantoo 04-16-2003, 11:24 AM These look like the brakes I have been waiting for! Do you have any pictures of the rear kit yet? How much for the full kit, front and rear? For a 2000RS...
iON Performance Inc 04-16-2003, 12:19 PM subarumantoo - We're waiting for the rotors to come in from casting for the rears. We've already gotten the hats, calipers, brakets etc all done. Once those are available, we'll be able to bolt together the rears to show under the stock WRX wheel.
Well, being that we're targeting 20 people for the front kits, that's $1625US shipped there.
For the rears, there'll be a GB when those are ready too.
The target GB price will be anywhere between $1250US-$1450US. It'll totally depend on how things fully pan out first. We've already commited to at least 10 sets of the calipers from AP for the rears in addition to our 20+ sets for the fronts.
subarumantoo 04-16-2003, 02:39 PM Thanks for the fast response! Get some pictures posted of the rears when you can please...
iON Performance Inc 04-16-2003, 11:54 PM subarumantoo - don't worry, there's lots of people in line waiting for the rears too ;)
In the meantime, would you like to be added to the Front BBK GB list? We're almost to 20 people :)
Regardless if you wait for the rears to buy both, or buy the front now and buy the rears later, they'll work out to be the same price. We're going to do this so no one will be dis-advantaged.
Not to mention, if upgrading the fronts only give you the ample braking you require, then you won't necessarily need to get the rears either :)
turboICE 04-17-2003, 12:19 AM I am assuming these calipers don't come with speed bleeders.
Do you know what size they would take?
Thanks,
Ed.
subarumantoo 04-17-2003, 12:20 PM Yes sir, sign me up for the front kit with the slotted rotors. I would still like pictures of the rear kit though! I have a 2000RS...
The price is going to be $1625 correct?
iON Performance Inc 04-17-2003, 02:36 PM jehcpa - nope calipers don't come w/ speed bleeders. They're optional :) We've got lots of those available for the caliper. The cost is ~$20US/pair.
If you want to get them elsewhere, these calipers use a standard size. M10x1 is the correct size.
subarumantoo - no problems. The pics for the rears will be posted once ready :) You've been added to the list :)
Yup the cost for the fronts is $2437.50CAD shipped (~$1795US shipped @ today's exchange rate 05/06/03) (for MO/EFT/Wire, CC payments only via Paypal, and have a 5% charge). You can for convience pay the deposit with Paypal, and then just send in a MO for the remaining balance. Or you can just use Paypal now and send in the whole payment.
iON Performance Inc 04-17-2003, 02:37 PM Our server is experiencing some problems right now, so hence if you've sent us an email within the past 12hrs we have yet to get it.

subarumantoo 04-17-2003, 04:45 PM You mean it is $80 more to pay buy credit card??? Why is that?
iON Performance Inc 04-17-2003, 05:06 PM subarumantoo - the reasons are as follows:
(1) Paypal charges 3.5% right off the top for recieving any payments. (cc or bank funds)
(2) Paypal also charges a conversion premium when it's withdrawn, as they won't allow the use of US Fund accounts in Canada. So they convert to Canadian currency before transferring. Paypal is consistently 4.5-8% less then what a bank would pay for an exchange from US->Canadian funds.
So hence, to have the exact same value as $1625US via MO, a payment of the same amount via Paypal is only worth $1547.62US. Hence to offset this, any payments made by Paypal are subject to a 5% charge to offset this, such that it is of equal value in the end.
We suggest that only in the event you must use CC to pay via Paypal, and just so for the deposit. This will give you an extra CC billing cycle for you to pay off the deposit. Then just pay your remaining balance via MO.
On average, the cost of sending a MO via USPS priority should be between $15-17.50 or so.
We decided to go with Paypal for CC payments as it will provide us with CC fraud protection, as well as provide our customers who pay via CC the assurance that there's no fraud on our end either. ie: like an insurance policy. As you'd (as a customer) have a dispute mechanism if anything arises.
iON Performance Inc 04-17-2003, 07:12 PM Ok guys, looks like the rears will now be 310mm x 20.5mm directionally vented for the rotor dimensions :) Also, no need to remove the backing plate in the rear to fit the kit :)
turboICE 04-17-2003, 07:18 PM Great, you got mail. :) if server is up.
Arnie 04-17-2003, 08:27 PM Will the rears fit without modification of the rear backing plate or will one need to bend it back a bit? And the rear is vented as well?! that is fantastic!:disco:
iON Performance Inc 04-17-2003, 10:03 PM Unfortunately the mail server is still down. ISP is working on fixing it. So in the mean time for those who need to get ahold of us please use -> ionperformance@hotmail.com

Arnie - no mods to the backing plate :) Yes the rear rotors are directionally vented like the fronts as well :)

teiva-boy 04-21-2003, 06:11 AM Oh boy I wish I wasn't moving this year... If I wasn't I'd love to drop $2k on a brake kit like this. Well then again when I do move I wont have to pay the outstanding shipping charges to Hawaii ;)
subarumantoo 04-21-2003, 09:34 AM I am gonna have to back out of this group buy. I will try to get in on the next one...
iON Performance Inc 04-21-2003, 11:34 AM teiva-boy - so where are you moving to Mitch?
subarumantoo - please check your PM's/email
wighti 04-22-2003, 12:24 PM Sorry guys I gotta drop out too.
I'm gonna pay off my Ccard instead.
btw...Do you know how this kit compares to Endless brakes?
iON Performance Inc 04-22-2003, 01:59 PM wighti - you do know that it's only the deposit that's due by the 23rd right?
The Endless kits are not DOT compliant. There's 2 versions, 4pot and a 6 pot version. Neither of them will fit underneath the stock 16x6.5" wheels. Both of them are also hella expensive.

I posted a few weeks ago that I might be loosing my job and would have to pull out of this GB. Well, instead of getting fired, i got transfered (temporarily). ie my job status is still uncertain. under these circumstances, i can not increase my CC debt as I would have, had my job been more certain.
Sorry. I'm cannot join this group buy.
Andy
C'mon folks, lets make this group buy work. Some of us really want these brakes. Can anyone recommend a vendor(s) for compatible pads? I'm guessing the local Autozone/NAPA/etc. is unlikely to have pads in stock for this caliper? Thanks.

iON Performance Inc 04-24-2003, 05:13 AM robp - the caliper is AP Racing, model CP5100. The manufacture pad # is CP3345. So you can use the CP3345 to cross reference with other pad manufacturers.
Hawk's pad # is : HB192.620 should come in the various Hawk pad compounds ie: HPS, HP Plus, Grey, Black etc.
HabsaWRX 04-24-2003, 10:33 AM Sorry if this was talked about before. I was just wondering if the stock spare tire will fit under this brake kit
iON Performance Inc 04-24-2003, 03:49 PM HabsaWRX - the spare in the car right now may not fit. We'll soon find out. Worse comes to worse, it will fit a OE 16" steel wheel from the Forester :) It's a better idea to carry a full sized spare anyways, rather then that little donut in the trunk.

turboICE 04-28-2003, 12:44 AM No the stock spare will not fit - just swap a good back wheel forward and put the spare on the back in a pinch.
But boy do they look and feel good. The stainless do everything for pedal feel that everyone has talked about. Still bedding and breaking in the pads. I will update next weekend after they are settled. The only thing that will arise I think is that I am going to have to get rid of the stock tires even sooner!
Check them out though on my baby WRBlue.

iON is running a great GB here (unlike some others we know about) - need to make sure we are good customers to the good vendors we need more like iON around.

Kyle Jones 04-28-2003, 03:55 PM Jack,
I had a great weekend, your kit is on and I gotta say it is very impressive both in appearence and performance. Thanks
Kyle:)
turboICE 04-28-2003, 09:30 PM KJ, So where is the pics in a better light than my garage afforded? :)
Anyway the brakes are setting nicely. I even had an unfortunate test of them today.
Normal NJ rush hour from 65 to a sudden stop. They were stopping nicely (and I left extra room anyway to avoid the need for emergency stops during the break in) and the guy in front of me panics and stops even faster than the traffic in front. I apply more pressure and get great bite from the pads and rotors. Then I see this driver behind me not paying attention and decide I better move. Slow brake release and I am moving up on the guy in front of me again - heck with it just pull onto the shoulder and let the woman behind me ABS right up to my passenger window and almost into the guy in front of me.
Well anyway not quite fully broken in about half way there and they performed great even on stock tires.
turboICE 04-28-2003, 11:48 PM iON - I guess you can update Kyle and me to installed and estatic!
turboICE 04-29-2003, 12:02 AM This is not a technically difficult install - however if you have never replaced calipers and brake lines I would seek assistance or someone else to do it. You should at a minimum watch and learn though and definitely learn to bleed and flush the brake lines. (And take it to someone who knows the proper WRX order RF, LR, LF, RR)
For the stainless steel brake lines follow their instructions - start at the caliper and work back towards the brake line.
The calipers and rotors are a snap - follow the directions on the blue sheet regarding which way the vanes are supposed to flow.
The only thing you need to know (that might throw an installer off) is that the mounting bracket installs on the opposite side of the bearing case as the stock bracket does - with the bolts entering from the opposite side and threading into the bracket. The recessed side of the bracket faces out (the caliper holes are not centered and if you don't put the bracket on this way the rotor will not sit flush against its seat).
The backing plate has two indentions at the top and bottom - there is nothing behind them so I have no idea why they were pressed there. Beat them flat. Bend the lip flat with pliers. There is an indention in the center of the arc of the backing plate. The tie rod knuckle is behind that part - no matter how good you think you are with metal you can not work it to fit - you will have to cut this part off. Modified in this manner the rotor will clear all parts of the plate.
useful 04-30-2003, 05:11 AM Is this deal still going on? If so, please put me on the list.
I have a 2002 wrx sedan. I want the slotted rotor version please ^_^
Many questions though:
Who do I contact for this sale?
E-mail? Web address? Phone Number?
Just confirming this was for $1625 shipped (Soo.... Free Shipping and Handling), any insurance??
How do I transfer funds?
And just double checking, this will find under the stock WRX 2002 rims?

iON Performance Inc 05-07-2003, 04:05 PM Guys, got off the phone w/ AP Racing in England. The calipers should be arriving the week of May 26th. The rotors are fully built already, so once the calipers come in, it should ship by the 30th of May
Nicotin2 05-07-2003, 04:53 PM does your BBK clear 16" Rota Slipstreams on the 02 wrx?
iON Performance Inc 05-07-2003, 04:58 PM Nicotin2 - yes they should clear the Rota Slipstreams in 16". We're waiting for Rota to get some in stock to double check the fitment of their Slipstreams.
topgrinder 05-08-2003, 06:13 AM im eagerly awaiting my kit .. my stock brakes r complete junk .. april 30th... whew long time.. i was hopin sooner my rear pads r almost toast too
Umm, that should be May 30th shouldn't it? Or do we really have to wait a whole year for our brakes.
iON Performance Inc 05-08-2003, 01:43 PM topgrinder - once they're done being manufactured in England, they're coming via DHL world freight, so if they ship on the week of the 26th, they'll arrive within 3-5 days tops from the date of being shipped. Since you're in Canada, UPS ground would take at most 5 days to get out to you.
robp - yup it's May 30th, not April of next year :)
iON Performance Inc 05-12-2003, 12:16 AM Those who are still interested, there's only 9 spots left to get this GB pricing. After that, it's going back to the NASIOC discounted price.
turboICE 05-14-2003, 11:39 PM Bump for update:
After a few weeks I couldn't be happier with my BBK. I will still be able to fit my stock wheels for winter!!! (sorry just excited about that and still able to have a great braking kit)
For a more substantive addition - under several hard braking sessions I have experienced no deflection from the calipers or flex in the mounting bracket. The arc along the crossover is very long and plenty beefy to provide good support on these light but well engineered custom aluminum calipers. The mounting brackets are equally well designed and you are more likely to get flex from the bearing housing. (OK a little tiny bit of an exaggeration but you get the point.) So this is real performance weight savings - you are not losing brake performance by losing the amount of unsprung weight and improved heat disappation of aluminum calipers.

useful 05-23-2003, 01:42 AM -bump <-- dunno what bump means but seems like everyone uses it.
Hey Jack,
Is there going to be a Group Buy for the rear brake kits?
Thanks,
U.
iON Performance Inc 05-23-2003, 02:17 AM useful - the price of the kit is $1450US shipped for the rears. This is for those such as yourself who have the fronts as well. This is such that it's fair for those who want to get in on both at the same time, the total GB prices will be exactly the same.
Check your email :)

XT6Wagon 06-02-2003, 04:01 AM Not a problem. just thought I'd offer incase your supply of teh stuff was limited for quite a while. I wasn't expecting to give up the spot though...

topgrinder 06-18-2003, 04:19 AM so what does that mean concerning my order??????????????? where am i on priority and when will my kit ship out??????????? i cant drive my car since my rear pads r squealing up the block and my fronts r toast as well.. i need these items asap man
iON Performance Inc 06-18-2003, 02:32 PM topgrinder - you're kit is scheduled to ship tomorrow. You should get it next wednesday or thursday @ the latest.
iON Performance Inc 06-23-2003, 01:20 PM In regards to the calipers, the new style bodies have yellow lettering. These are the right calipers, so no need to worry
turboICE 06-23-2003, 03:22 PM Will my front and rear lettering not match? Where do you stand on sending out the rears?
iON Performance Inc 06-23-2003, 04:27 PM jehcpa - all the guys with the white AP lettering will have the matching rear calipers.
Those who have the ones w/ the yellow lettering will have yellow lettering for the rears as well.
iON Performance Inc 06-24-2003, 09:05 PM For those who are installing the brakes, please remember to use locktite! Torque to between 65-70lb-ft torque.
turboICE 06-24-2003, 09:08 PM ^ on the caliper and support bolts - not the pads or rotors!
useful 06-24-2003, 11:47 PM excuse the ignorance, what is locktite?
useful 06-24-2003, 11:53 PM never mind! Found an article on loctite......
Duh...
Ill stick with the blue stuff...
http://motorcycles.about.com/library/tips/bllocktite.htm
turboICE 06-24-2003, 11:55 PM Yep I would go with blue - still removable with hand tools.
By the way - the support bolts are 19mm. The lug wrench makes an excellent breaker bar for tightening or lossening in the confines of the wheel well. Then I check with a torque wrench.
iON Performance Inc 06-26-2003, 01:06 AM FYI guys, we'll be at Pikes Peak, CO. this coming weekend for the hill climb. So updates and replies between now and Saturday will be delayed
Can anyone explain to me why I got a bill for $31 from UPS?
Johnny5 06-28-2003, 06:37 PM Yea, I just git one too. Some sort of Brokerage Fee for $31. I though shipping and handling was included?
acuratech 06-29-2003, 02:25 PM I also got this customs charge of $31 from ups
Johnny5 06-29-2003, 04:50 PM Anyone else having an install issue? The passenger rotor and caliper is grinding on the very outside edge of the rotor. This happens when making a left turn and the rotor flexes a little into the caliper. I have the calipers with the yellow lettering. It looks like the tolerance is off for either the caliper or rotor and once the rotor heats up, it grinds against the caliper!! Let me know if anyone is having this issue.
Thanks,
John
I just put the brakes on this weekend, so the only driving I've done with them was to bed the pads. I noticed after a few stops I heard a metal on metal grinding sound as well. I'm not sure what it was though. I also get the same sound when turning all the way left or right. Just looking at it afterword I couldn't find any place where it was noticeably wearing though.
