View Full Version : Reflash options for 94 octane?

I was under the assumption that the Vishnu reflashes could be done for higher octane but after talking to them on the phone yesterday, I was told that they only tune for 91 octane. I understand their policy to do this because most people that they do work for will only have access to 91 octane and Vishnu themselves are located in a state that only offers 91 octane.

What what about the handful of us that can run 94? If I were to get a Vishnu reflash, would 94 octane increase performance, make the car run "safer" or just be a waste of money?

As far as I've been able to pick up, it looks like scoobysport-usa and Prodrive (soon) are the only US companies offering reflashes. Is the market of 94 octane users too small to justify the cost of developing a map?

The Prodrive ecu reflash is tuned for 93 octane, but from what I've heard it's set up for either a stock car or one with "light mods". So far, what's luring me to Vishnu is that they seem to have tons of maps for differant configurations. (Yet, if you are close to one of their Stage setups, it looks like they ship you a base Stage X reflash becasue the ECU can learn around it).

So, I guess my question is, "Will me running 94 octane help or be a waste of money?" and if it's a waste of money "is it worth waiting for a company to offer a reflash based on a higher octane rating?"

Hi there,

I'm the guy mapping the ECUs so here's the deal with respect to octane:

All ECUs that leave our shop are mapped to run safetly on 91 octane. This is especially important for those who even plan on living in (or even driving through) states like California, Colorado, etc,.

HOWEVER, I do leave in sufficient knock correction authority range to take advantage of higher octane gas (and even race gas). So, in essense, I'm taking advantage of the factory ECU's adaptive abilities. So yes, there is benefit to running 94 octane. As I'm sure I'll see when I'm out in NJ next week for the big reflashing marathon :)

Cheers,
Shiv

Shiv, thanks for replying - I know you're a busy guy!

I have some intercooler hoses and a pulley being sent to me from your shop (hopefully in the mail now) and I'll be calling you up once I get them installed.

Are you talking about Sunoco 94? Does anyone have any thoughts on this. I thought I read somewhere that someone said they get knock on Sunoco 94 before Mobil 93. I also seem to remember Sunoco putting alchohol in their fuel. Is this true for their 94 as well?

Doc, I had posted a similar question about 94 in another thread and somebody brought up what you are saying. It was news to me. But apparently, Sunoco adds ethynol to their gas as a cheap octane booster. One side effect that was noted was that the ethynol is very bad on the rubber (?) seals within the engine and was not recommened. Looks like I'll be switching to Mobile 93 or BP/Amaco 93.

I wish I had known this sooner... I've been giving my WRX Sunoco 94 for over a year now.
