View Full Version : Build ups!
jdmimpreza 02-02-2003, 10:45 AM Its a very broad question.
Ever since you got your impreza, what direction do you want to go into. Forced induction? Suspension/handling? Looks?
Just want to get a vibe for what everyone is into now a days.
When I started getting into Subys, the talk of the town was Handling over Power. Then when the WRX was coming out, Its all about having a turbo.
I got the turbo(endless money pit) now I just want to build up suspension, brakes, and comfort.
Right now (my mind changes frequently)? Plans....
Power:
~220hp NA
Cobb intake
Greddy EVO catback
TWE headers/cat
Cams (Cobb or TWE)
Pulleys
Stand alone, maybe a link
whatever else I need to get there
Handling:
Looking to keep ground clearance
Eibach springs
KYB AGX struts
18mm RSB
MRT end links
ALK
Cusco F/R strut bars
STi top mounts
Brakes:
STi 4 pots up front
STi 2 pots out back
SS lines
new MC
better pads
That's the plan for now. If I get a good job out of school, I might buy another Impreza and go nuts with that one. This car I just want a car that will be fun on any road.

jdmimpreza 02-02-2003, 02:04 PM I remember reading about the impreza back in 99 quote and quote lack of aftermarket parts.
I've put in about $14,000 into my car and it never stops.
I need suspension upgrades bad, looks like everyone is going with KYB since i'm not to into coilovers. I got a set of azenis tires 225/45/17 sitting in my garage just waiting to put them on.
Hey hondaslayer how are the forester endlinks?
I'm still looking into doing an engine build up, pistons sleeves, and springs but that will be later after it blows up.
Hondaslayer 02-02-2003, 03:48 PM Nice,Better than stock,Not the best upgrade,if you are looking at buying new just get something aftermarket. They were free so I aint arguing!

Ben,
I think my friend has extra endlinks off his forester. Also I also heard about using the castor arm bushings off the forester instead getting an anti lift kit. If this is true I'm not sure, I just heard about it.
Eric SS 02-02-2003, 06:35 PM I have always gone toward handling and performance and not asthetics at all. I have some suspension and some motor ( ;) ) upgrades but hardly anything asthetic at all.
Eric
NimrodBoz 02-02-2003, 08:39 PM Basically im not worrying about getting more power...what the RS provides I am happy with. my dream is to get a 2001 WRB RS and make it look like one of these (or if ever possible, OWN one of them myself):
http://www.warrender.co.uk/jpg/wrx-ltd-4door.jpg
http://www.warrender.co.uk/jpg/imp_sti.jpg
I think some updates to suspension, exhaust, and other nooks and crannies to increase efficiency would be top priority too. But ill be the first to admit that id go for the looks of it!

You'll have to paint it then because WRB wasn't available in 2001 :)
Eric
Well I bought my car to turbo it :D Plain and simple, but since cosmetic mods and handling mods are cheaper and more reliable, that's the road I've been taking. I want to be able to push 250-300hp at the wheels(or more  ) and have the car be reliable, so I know I'm going to have either rip apart the EJ25 and strengthen it or buy myself an EJ20 and work with that. I think I'd have more fun with the EJ25... oh I want the STi 6spd tranny too :D
Keith
Kostamojen 02-03-2003, 04:44 AM Well, my suspension is mostly finished, minus possibly some bushing replacing or something which I wouldnt invest in unless the car became a dedicated track car...
Where I'm headed (starting with what will be done soon):
New tires (khumo MX or yoko AVS ES100's)
2nd cat replacement pipe (for ST-X autocross racing)
RS hood w/ stuff so it fits right, and painted to match (like the only major dress-up thing I want to do)
ENGINE! This EJ18 is killin me, I just want a EJ25 w/ ECU and wiring harness.
After that, no idea... I know what stuff I WANT but its not practical unless I had a 2nd car :p

The path I am going due to costs and oppertunites: "Almost stock" Power, "20mm rear sway" Handling, "clear lights and crappy caliper paint job" Looks
Kurt
Takashi 02-04-2003, 03:25 AM so far, i've gone for handling over power...
my 99rs is modified like this, in order:
1) 20mm rear sway bar
2) tanabe sustec front strut tower bar
3) tanabe hypermedalion exhaust (put it back to stock... piping was too big, but a great sound)
4) 17" uk wrx wheels w/kumho 712s
5) goodrich ss braklines, sti top mounts, sti ver.6 struts, and prodrive p1 springs
6) ver 5/6 grille <----- huge hp gain
(the car's handling characteristics are very different after i switched wheels and suspension.... i have not one regret about installing those items)
if i continue modifying, i'd do small visual things next:
7) ver 5/6 front lip and rear spats, paint matched silverthorne (i'd have the sideskirts painted as well)
after which, i'd try tightening things up a bit:
8) sti short throw shifter
9) sti engine/tranny mounts
10) stiffer front sway bar
if, after all that, i still have the car, i'd heavily contemplate:
11) wrx engine swap
12) 4pots up front
that's about it...
greg
Kostamojen 02-04-2003, 03:52 AM Actually, now that I think about it, I really really really want to do this when stever gets the kit finished! http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&postid=3298946#post3298946
Subi Ru 02-04-2003, 02:08 PM I've been doing mostly handling since there isn't too much you can do to wring more power outta the EJ18.
My car is my daily driver too, so I have to make sure it's reliable.
I'm not doing any power mods cause I'm secretly holding out for an engine swap! :D
RaceCarRiot 02-04-2003, 06:19 PM hmph...since i continue to dance around the swap issue, here's everything i've done in the last couple years:
MY99 RS wheels
JCS intake (recently went back to the stock intake, since it works better)
JCS lightened pulleys
prodrive WR back box
borla EJ25 headers
ghetto rigged WRX midpipe
proECM chip
KYB GR2 struts
H&R springs
cusco front/rear strut towers
STi 4 piston brakes/STi pads
FWD legacy rear disc brake conversion
ghetto fabulous short shifter w/ the swanky trust shift knob
apex RSM (so i could awe myself with my incredible cornering/braking numbers)
WRX front seats
replaced all the intake/engine breather hoses with fancy silicone ones
pink i badge
etc. etc.
not terribly fast, but quick enough and corners/outbrakes anything on the road. :D
in the next couple weeks, i think i'm going to get around to refinishing/painting my V5/6 bumper i've had laying around. i kicked my self into gear by ordering foglight covers and turn signals today, so that should be done in the next few weeks. and i ordered a roof scoop, that i will try to get to work with my sunroof, so i can have good ventilation with only cracking the roof. :D i'm trying to snag an RS coupe wing, since they're not the plain jane sedan one, but still look nice and clean, to balance the look of the car. i think i'll leave the hood flat for now. finish the exhaust by bumping it up to a stromung 2.5" midpipe and get a hi-flow cat section. get an RS rear seat so the interior sorta matches...right now it's light grey rear seats and black front seats...
it never ends...i just figured i'd finally spruce up the exterior so i do things like WASH the car once in a while.
Siper2 02-12-2003, 06:58 PM mykrrrr,
How do you like the '02 seats? With all the talk about how they sit higher in the GC, how is your experience with them, compared to stock?
Now then, as for what I want with my car. I've got a lot of it already... A couple years ago I was fortunate to have a good job, and was able to pay for a few things. Since then I've only upgraded a couple very small things, but here's what I've got so far (I'll go in approximate order of install):
- Leather seating & door inserts (from dealership, done by Classic Soft Trim in MA)
- Stereo (Alpine CDA-7940 CD tuner, Boston Acoustics RC61 front component speakers in kick panels, DEI HE-1062 rear coax. speakers, Boston Acoustics Competitor 10" subwoofer and Alpine MRV-F353 5-channel amplifier in custom trunk box, AudioControl Four.1i in-dash EQ/line driver, Monster Cable)
- Whiteline 18-22mm rear adjustable swaybar (currently set at 20)
- Kartboy short shifter & bushings
- Webkris-edition front skidplate
- K&N air filter
- Subaru trunk carpet/mat
- Sparco pedals (mounted quite crookedly)
- Trunk light upgrade
- Nokian Hakkapeliitta 1 tires for winter (195/65-15 on Legacy steel wheels)
- Tim O'Neil's one-day Winter Driving course (hey, that's an important "mod" ... !!!)
- Dual cupholder from the Legacy
- Whiteline front strut tower brace
- Homemade, North_Ursalia-pattern black plastic mudflaps
- STi Version 5 suspension (struts & springs with OEM strut tops)
- 22B hood vents
- Dunlop SP9000 tires (OEM-size) for summer
- Kartboy Knuckleball shift knob
- Kartboy exhaust hangers
- Porterfield R4-S brake pads all around
- 22B grille badge
- STi Group N engine & transmission mounts
- FrozenRotors.com OEM-sized front rotors (Brembo cryo-treated)
- Hella Supertones horns
Now, then. What direction do I want to take? :) With this particular car, I'd like to stick with naturally aspirated. Whatever I do, the car MUST be reliable. I have over 70k on my car already, meaning I do a good bit of driving on a yearly basis. Having no engine upgrades thus far, here's what I'd eventually like, though I'd like to say that my focus for this car is a little added power and smoothness, with the rest of the focus being on good cosmetics:
- Firstly I'd like to have my car PAID OFF :D
- As many performance driving courses as I can take
- STi strut tops, to round out and finish the suspension
- Maybe an RS coupe wing (which is an STi Ver.2, I think)
- STi 4-pot front brakes with Porterfield pads and FrozenRotors front rotors
- Move my Dunlops to Speedline 2116 wheels, and use my OEMs for new Nokian Hakka. 1 (or 2) tires (since I'll have to sell my 15"s with the 4-pot upgrade, or even just a WRX rotor upgrade if I go that route to save money)
- Perhaps a single-stage brake booster and heavy-duty master cylinder bracket (unimportant to me, really, but it may help)
- CAI, most likely from PDM-Racing
- Radiator baffle from Primitive: http://www.writerguy.com/primitive/motor.htm
- STi Version 6 front grille
- STi Ver.6 front underlip spoiler, rear spats, and aero mudguard kit (which I'll probably leave in unpainted black)
- Mesh foglight covers (http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&postid=3177134#post3177134)
- New carpet from the group buy
- Move my Hella horns behind the grille, instead of the OEM spot
- New cat-back exhaust (probably just a custom muffler shop job)
- STi Version 5/6/7 Momo steering wheel
- New front seats (possibly Recaro SRD or Style, or Cobra seats) in a cloth/leather combo matching my OEMs (or maybe just '03 2.5RS seats would work if they aren't too tall)
- Maybe an aluminum GC WRX hood
- Dynamat for my doors (for that nice "thunk" and less road noise)
- OEM carbon fiber trim kit, maybe the e-brake handle too (they're cheaper these days, from Subaru)
- STi 20mm rear swaybar to replace my Whiteline, which fits poorly
- Kartboy rear droplinks & Rev-Lab front ones
(The swaybar & droplink mods will probably come sooner than just about everything else. Maybe the CF trim too, but not the e-brake.)
An ECU upgrade would be cool, if I could talk myself into spending the money. Anything like that I'd take to Rallispec in NJ. I've always looked at Cobb Tuning's N/A block/power upgrades but... well... it's pricey, plus I can drive to Rallispec easily and they can work with my needs, too.
That's about all I can think of. We all have extensive "want" lists, it's just a matter of time and money before they can be met. I suppose my main focus is comfort (like new seats), cosmetics (grille, spoilers) and a hint of added power (CAI, exhaust). I've got the suspension already, so handling is knocked. Reliability is absolutely key.

Siper2 02-17-2003, 02:19 PM Tats,
Do you have all of those mods already or are they goals? Wow, pretty extensive. :)
If you haven't done the leather e-brake yet, you can get one of the upgraded leather boots from my old shift boot buy, a couple years ago, from Rick Hesel at www.ricks2k.com . $45 shipped, any color you like, any combination, too. (i.e. black leather with red stitch, blue and black alternating panels with black stitch on the blue and vice versa, yellow, green.......)
The only stipulation is that if you want colored panels, it has to be regular leather. There's a perforated leather option but if you get that, the leather itself has to be black. You can still get whatever stitch you want, though.
Maybe I ought to resurrect that baby. :) You order through Rick on that site, as well. (I was just the one who got him to do it, since I knew him from S2ki.com .)
-S2-
Siper2,
Yes...I have all those mods...the only ones not installed yet though are the AVO turbo kit, link, and AVC-R. They will go on when it get a bit warmer. As for future mods??? Who Knows........probably a p1 Suspension, Rota Formals and either a Legacy turbo rear brake conv. or 2-pot rears.
Tats.

RalliTek 02-17-2003, 07:31 PM Tats - let me know I you have any questions on the AVO kit. We have installed them before.
DoinkMobb 02-17-2003, 11:28 PM Handling > Power
Power and EJ18 do not belong in the same sentence, so I'm not even going to bother with it. My gas mileage is good and I'm not about to spend $$$ for a few more HP. However, by spending the $$$ on my suspension, I can exponentially increase my car's handling abilities.
Done:
- WRX rims
- 205/45/16 Yokohama AVS ES100's
- WRX front brake swap
- FHI/JDM clear corners
- de-pin striped
- took off IMPREZA sticker on rear
- various weight reducing measures
Planned:
- KYB GR2 struts
- Whiteline Control springs (1 - 1.5" drop)
- Whiteline ALK
- WRX 20 or 17 mm rear sway bar
- quality endlinks
- ver. 4 front bumper
- lightweight pullies
- racing seats or WRX seats
- STi engine/tranny mounts
- aggresive street alignment specs
My stock suspension is floaty and unresponsive. On tight turns it feels like my car is grinding into the ground. Hopefully in the near future, I'll have the struts and springs done. Wheel gap = bad.
The stock bumper looks so boring, and I'd like some big, yellow fog lights to go with it. The lightweight pullies are the only power adder I'm interested in at this point. An engine swap or turbo is the only other power option I'd consider. As for the seats - my driver side seat is dying and it needs to be replaced.
Hondaslayer 02-17-2003, 11:33 PM Just added to my list
STi ver6 typeR seats
Finally got the last bit to my turbo kit:devil:
steve_d 02-18-2003, 09:50 AM BIG ASS wing mounted to factory wing,
