View Full Version : Free Pop-Up Killer. MightyWRX02 02-02-2003, 12:03 PM I need one desperately, NOW. Just making this thread I got 4 pop-ups. Does anyone have an sugestions? Mike~~ Strepto 02-02-2003, 12:17 PM sounds like spyware or something. grab adaware off download.com and scan your system PhlypSide 02-02-2003, 12:18 PM Download this browser. It's faster. It's free, only has a small banner add portion of it's GUI (can be removed by paying for the program), which is very unobtrusive IMO anyhow. It also has an option to block all pop-up windows "Refuse pop-up windows". lateRZ MightyWRX02 02-02-2003, 12:19 PM Originally posted by PhlypSide Download this browser. It's faster. Mike~~ gadget951 02-02-2003, 12:21 PM Check out Panicware.com there free pop up stoper has worked great for me. No ads or banners just a small icon in your task bar letting you know when it is on and when it is stopping popups. Scott Star*Child 02-02-2003, 12:23 PM I'd hit get adaware first...but then check out: http://www.proxomitron.org chkltcow 02-02-2003, 12:32 PM AdAware hasn't been updated in months and can't find the new stuff. Try Spybot: http://security.kolla.de PhlypSide 02-02-2003, 12:43 PM Originally posted by MightyWRX02 Then what, delete ie? How am I supposed to stop the pop-ups from popping up on ie? Mike~~ IE, also known as Internet Exploder, should only be used on sites that insist on using Microsoft proprietary (non-RFC compliant) modifications to the HTTP. Don't use IE unless you have to :) But it does sound as though some porn or other program you accidentally installed is sending nasty pop-up ads to you. lateRZ pjcoregon 02-02-2003, 12:44 PM freesurfer is a no nag, freeware pop up killer. Look for it at www.nonags.com. Mulder 02-02-2003, 12:47 PM Yeah it has to be spyware/adware of some kind since the NASIOC site doesn't normally load any popups. You need to get rid of the spyware rather then try to just kill the popups that shouldn't be there in the first place. And be careful in the future what you download and install on your PC. Those free programs and games often contain hidden spyware inside. I'm using Netscape which I know not everybody likes, but the latest version has a built-in popup killer that works very well. wix 02-02-2003, 12:55 PM Mike, if you have kazaa or any of that stuff running all the time, close it.. those stupid p2p programs constantly generate pop ups when you aren't doing anything. Also get search and destroy from the link above and have it get rid of all the spyware you might have on your computer. - Kevin MstrDC 02-02-2003, 01:00 PM AdAware hasn't been updated in months and can't find the new stuff. You haven't been keeping up. Ad-Aware just came come out with version 6 just a couple weeks ago. In fact they just updated their reference file on the 31st. Ad-aware (http://lavasoft3.element5.com/) Also I like Avant Browser (http://www.avantbrowser.com/). It's just an extention to IE, and it also has a built in pop-up killer. Not to mention it's constanly being updated and is only a 800KB download! chkltcow 02-02-2003, 01:06 PM Sorry, AdAware pissed me off a week or 2 ago when I went there trying to get something to clean up my boss's computer, and it hadn't been updated since September. It's kinda crappy business practice when people pay for your software, and you quit updating it just because you're working on a new version. Granted, I didn't pay for it, but it doesn't say much for the company producing it MightyWRX02 02-02-2003, 01:52 PM Originally posted by chkltcow AdAware hasn't been updated in months and can't find the new stuff. Try Spybot: http://security.kolla.de This seems to have worked so far. Thanks for the advice everyone. I think the reason it was happening, is that I accidently clicked on a pop-up and it d/l a program on to my computer. Some sort of scratch-off ordeal. Mike~~ ImprezaTs 02-02-2003, 03:25 PM how do I kill messenger popups? I have pop-up stopper now and it blocks all the browser pop-ups but not messengers messengers such as: You have been hacked please see userhacked.com DeClerq 02-02-2003, 04:40 PM POW! from AnalogX. It's the best one I've come across. You can tell it to kill only those pop-up windows you want. http://download.com.com/3000-2381-8156476.html?tag=lst-0-1 Dorkfish 02-02-2003, 05:41 PM Originally posted by ImprezaTs how do I kill messenger popups? I have pop-up stopper now and it blocks all the browser pop-ups but not messengers messengers such as: You have been hacked please see userhacked.com Get a firewall, or disable the messenger service (assuming you are running XP or 2000) If you are running XP, enablethe XP firewall. Dorkfish 02-02-2003, 05:59 PM I don't beleive in using pop-up stoppers. I have seen how much stuff that they break. The only time Iget pop-ups is when I am browsing certain web pages. If you are receiving pop-ups ALL the time (even on NASIOC) then you most likely have a spyware software installed on your machine (like GAIN from the makers of Gator). Adaware is really good, but you are right it is out of date. They are expecting a new version in ?Feb?, but until then you can try the spybot search and destroy thing. Also, with those two applications you will want to look in add or remove programs to remove any software found BEFORE using the software (adaware or spybot) to remove it for you. I hear about this a couple of times a day and it is a pain to fix. If you want some techy details here you go. Some spyware (like new.net domains) modify a registry key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\WinSock2. If you delete the files without uninstalling it, then it will not remove it's modification and you will not be browsing the Internet AT ALL! Spyware sux. I deal with it EVERY day. It breaks a lot of stuff. OK, I'm out -Fish ImprezaTs 02-02-2003, 06:10 PM Originally posted by Dorkfish Get a firewall, or disable the messenger service (assuming you are running XP or 2000) If you are running XP, enablethe XP firewall. how do I disable the messenger service? my computer is a server at home. I am using win2000 would format my hd work? gugarci 02-02-2003, 06:19 PM I use Mozilla so i haven't seen a pop-ups in months. But when i was using IE i used Pop-up stopper from panicware. The only one that works 100%of the time. Reason it works is because you tell it when it's ok to open a second window. Jimmy S. 02-02-2003, 06:56 PM www.avantbrowser.com havent seen a popup since i installed it, not a big download and loads right into your existing IE.... -SF MstrDC 02-02-2003, 08:55 PM how do I disable the messenger service? Start->Control Panel->Administrative Tools->Component Services->Click the Services(Local) tree->Scoll to Messenger->Right click Messenger->Properties->Click Stop to stop the service. Pcp03 02-02-2003, 09:00 PM Check out mozilla, it's great. It's netscape but you have an option to block all pop-ups, at least ones that come from mozilla. It won't block kazaas pop-ups, but it's still great. Mozilla (http://www.mozilla.org/start/) HomerJay 02-02-2003, 09:01 PM Try "Spybotz search and destroy" works awesome. I had problems and Adaware didn't work but spybotz did. Do a search on google. It's a free download. -JOE Impresario 02-02-2003, 09:07 PM Opera 7 doesn't have the ad banner anymore. And it rocks for killing pop-ups on websites! If it weren't for lazy web designers using Microsloth proprietary HTML it would be the perfect browser. Anyway, give it a try at www.opera.com . moss 02-02-2003, 09:34 PM Originally posted by Dorkfish If you are running XP, enablethe XP firewall. ok my turn.. how do enable the firewall on xp? Ikonosin 02-02-2003, 09:44 PM Originally posted by moss ok my turn.. how do enable the firewall on xp? To enable or disable Internet Connection Firewall -Open Network Connections -Click the Dial-up, LAN or High-Speed Internet connection that you want to protect, and then, under Network Tasks, click Change settings of this connection. -On the Advanced tab, under Internet Connection Firewall, select one of the following: -To enable Internet Connection Firewall (ICF), select the Protect my computer and network by limiting or preventing access to this computer from the Internet check box. -To disable Internet Connection Firewall, clear the Protect my computer and network by limiting or preventing access to this computer from the Internet check box. --Notes To open Network Connections, click Start, click Control Panel, and then double-click Network Connections. You must be logged on as a computer administrator to complete this procedure. If you clear the Protect my computer and network by limiting or preventing access to this computer from the Internet check box, the firewall on your computer is disabled, and your network is vulnerable to intrusions. You should not enable Internet Connection Firewall on virtual private networking (VPN) connections or on client computers because ICF will interfere with file and printer sharing. ICF cannot be enabled on the private connections of the Internet Connection Sharing host computer. Internet Connection Sharing, Internet Connection Firewall, Discovery and Control, and Network Bridge are not available on Windows XP 64-Bit Edition. subarugt 02-02-2003, 09:45 PM www.panicware.com Has a free as well as pay versions. This works great and if you want a pop up to actually work you can temporarily suspend it by htting ctrl. file_id 02-03-2003, 04:42 AM Another vote for popup stopper |
