Hey ALL,

I changed out the factory headlamp bulb about a year ago, and have just recently found out that the bulbs have melted my plugs. I searched through the forum and learned that there are headlight harness upgrades that I could buy.

I was wondering if anyone has upgraded their light harness for their WRX?

if so, Can you please let me know where you've purchased this, what brand (or model number), and how much paid?

One other thing, If you've had any problems with the kit or install?

Thanx in advance

Ray

What was the wattage of the bulbs that melted the harness?

i work for a subaru dealership in Kansas. and i have seen about 2 maybe 3 of this same thing happening. the bulbs are melting up the harness. our advice here is to not change the bulbs at all. i haven't heard of an upgrade harness. but, being a wrx owner myself i would like to know of one, or some cool blue bulbs that wouldn't melt my harness

you can get an upgrade harness from www.suvlights.com

I've had it in my old Civic, and it worked great!

Yikes, I've been looking for that exact same thing (suvlights page), but $45+$8 shipping, the relays and relay harnesses are about $6, there's got to be someplace that sells those H7 connectors reasonably, now if only I had a diagram of the Wiring for the headlights so I knew how to wire up the relays, that whole switched ground thing has me concerned. I'm a mechanical engineer, I leave the electrons to the sparkies.

This is a little better (http://www.prolightstar.com/lightbulbs/wireharness9007.html)

But I don't know what's in it.... Ugh, guess I'll call em.

Does anyone know where I can get the male and female connectors that would attach to the factory (into car) plug and to the bulbs? I am thinking that if those parts aren't too expensive (<$10 for 1 male and 2 female) I can make these things for under $20.

As for the wiring...

-Wire the switched ground (which is really just 12V+) for both the High and Low beam (one relay for each) to the 86 of the relay. I would use the Male connector to plug into the harness.

-ground wire on 85

-Power from Battery on 30

-Power to Lights on 87 (One relay wired to both High beams, the other to both low beams)

Did I make any errors?

Does anyone still know how to get those connectors? Someone told me it was a PX29t type base, but that search on google prooved fruitless, anyone have some friends at amp/tyco?

Anyone have any ideas where I can get (Male and Female) plugs for 9007's?

i don't know where you can get the male and female plugs for the lights, but i am thinking the same thing you are (i can do it better, with better parts, for cheaper).

something i'm thinking... why even have the moulded plastic/rubber boot on there at all? what's the harm in not having it there? corrosion? i don't think it's water/splash proof, and you could certainly smother your exposed connections with some high temperature grease, which would probably work better at keeping the contacts clean.

it seems to me that some male/female spade connectors could be made to work. a side benefit is that being exposed will probably keep them cooler.

personally, i think the moulded plastic/rubber things are just there to make plugging and unplugging the harness a bit more idiot-proof.

thoughts?

i have some good mail order sources for 40A sealed automotive relays w/mounting tabs.
