View Full Version : Need a wire that's got voltage only when high's are on

Looking for a wire either under the dash near the fog switch or under the hood that's only got voltage when the high beams are on. Anyone know of one that's easy to get to?

THanks,
Paul

There really isn't one. The headlight system operates with ground switching and common positive. If you really need a high-beam switched voltage a relay may be needed.

The high beams are switched on using the indicator column stalk right? grab a multimeter, figure out which circuit does it & go from there....

Yes but those are switched grounds, not voltage--

whether you're switching grounds or positives is irrelevant....there'll still be a voltage that exists between 2 wires....look for the circuit that switches your high beams on from the indicator stalk & use that....what are you using it for? do you want to switch your fogs on in tandem with the high beams? if so, you'll need to use relay switching...

Technically you're correct, but the original question was specifically looking for a switched voltage. If all he needs is to switch a relay with the high beams the high beam ground would certainly work, using the headlight common positive or another source of key-operated 12V.

OK already...we could go on speculating all night...

So, Snowphun, let us know what it is that you're trying to accomplish and we'll give you our suggestions on how to go about it.

Well, when I first posted I had resigned to trying to find a source to trip the relay that would allow my driving lights to be on only when the high beams were on. Then I found this thread: driving lights (http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=306666) , which talks about what I really would like to do: adjust the fog switch so it will allow me to use it to control my driving lights (again, only on if the highs are on).

Wiring makes my head hurt, and Subaru certainly handles it differently than German cars.

Thanks for any input,
Paul

If you are replacing your fogs with driving lights there is a much easier way than the method described in the post you've referenced. So, are you adding driving lights or are you replacing your fogs with driving lights?

Replacing the fogs. The big difference here is I want the driving lights to only work when the high beams are on, and the fog switch is in. That way they'll turn off when I dim my main lights.

Thanks!
Paul

or when you turn off the fog switch...
