Has anyone talked to Vortech, or at least emailed them, about getting a supercharger kit for the 2.5? I just emailed them a very lengthy letter trying to get some information because I saw that they have one for the 1999-2000 Civic Si.

Anyone care to read it?

Someone was developing a vortech kit for the RS and it blew a motor. Then they gave up on it. *shrug* It still makes me wonder, just how much belt is too much? This engine is not easy to supercharge, that is for sure.

Was that the Rimmer kit that blew the motor?

You know, I haven't thought about that car for a while but Rimmer did a project supercherged 2.5 RS a couple of years ago. There may have been other attempts by other manufacturers but the reason I remember the Rimmer is because after it blew up it was brought to Ann Arbor Subaru for disection. I can't remember for sure but I think Sports Compact Car was doing the project, anyway it was one of the car magazines. The story is that once they put the supercharger on they took it to the Chrysler Proving Grounds for some high speed testing on the oval. It's said that on one of the banks of the oval at 130 mph or so the engine seized. The cause was attributed to 1)the long, high speed, banked curve pushing all the oil away from the pick up and 2)The engine oil had never been changed on an engine with 8,000 miles on it.

OH MAN THAT'S SO GOOOOD TO HEAR!
I have been talkin to (I think it was Jason) at Rimmer, and of course he never mentioned that event! However I think their setup is pretty safe...if the right precautions are taken. Now, I am just not settled on a turbo or supercharger setup! What do you guys think?

why not do both use the super charger with say 4-6 lbs. to feed the turbo(10-13 lbs. max) that way turbo lag is reduced.

Just wait for the Eaton SC. It willl be standard on the STX. (2.5L)

Tats.

Actually the ST-X is getting the H6 from the Outback. The supercharger was only for the prototype.

I agree. I think they won't go with the supercharger on the STX as well. We all know how well these trans's hold up to boost, so if they are boosting a 2.5... they are nuts thinking they'll stay together.

I've weighed in on the STX before, but I'll do it again.

The target market for the STX is going to be different than that for the Outback.

The mild form (212 hp) of the H6 3.0 is definitely going to be in the STX. I bet the 2.5 stays the base engine, though, just to get a low price point for base models to get them on the street.

But there is going to have to be something more to go with the image - the comparison other in the wild-style 4 door pickup range is the Nissan Frontier. Supercharged, it is 240 hp.

The question is what is in Subaru's box that can get them into that image game?

Currently, nothing - even the STi version of the WRX motor is not going to be appropriate - not enough grunt down low to move a much heavier vehicle in the US market. So they will have to do something else.

Could be warming up the H6 - some VVT tricks to turn up the horses. 240ish is probably an easy do. But that really isn't Subaru's style. My guess is turbo over super, because that's where they have expertise, and training Subaru techs in the WRX carries over in the service bay. I doubt they would turbo the H6, because that's an all new R&D ballgame. I say a factory turbo on the 2.5, tuned to 250 or so hp, will be available late in the model year on the STX, and later in Legacy GT's, but never in an Impreza chassis vehicle.

At least not from the factory.
