View Full Version : Need Help BAD!!!
WRXGuyInUSA 03-22-2003, 12:05 AM I was just out driving my car, and all of the sudden it will no longer let me rev past 4k RPM without hesitation/backfiring. I'm not sure what it is, but it almost feels like you're hitting the rev limiter, only at 4K instead of 7K. There's NO odd noises 0-4K RPM, and it feel normal until I hit that.
I already tried resetting the ECU, and that didn't help...
ANY IDEAS!!?!?!?
munkis 03-22-2003, 12:48 AM Check Engine light on?
Sounds like a blown MAF.
Jay
WRXGuyInUSA 03-22-2003, 02:47 AM I tried swapping the MAF with a buddy on his stock WRX... nothing...
I'm damn confused...
WRXGuyInUSA 03-22-2003, 12:33 PM Could it be my uni-chip?
mofoporn 03-22-2003, 02:43 PM bad wire or plug
deadbolt 03-22-2003, 03:53 PM Sounds like what happened on mine when the ceramic on the plug developed a tiny crack, almost invisible to the naked eye. You messed with the plugs lately?
WRXGuyInUSA 03-22-2003, 10:46 PM Haven't checked the plugs yet... good idea.
here's what I've checked... most parts were swapped with a buddy...
EGT probe (uppipe)
Limp Mode (reset computer, now no CELs)
Crank angle position sensor (I think that's what its called)
Uni-chip (unplugged, back to stock)
Boost/vacuum lines (all secure)
O2 sensor on exhaust (swapped, still nothing)
Car sounds good, drives good, until 4K...
I think I'll give the plugs a shot...
hpracingwrx 03-23-2003, 01:26 PM yep i had the same problem, how are your egt readings? r they really high? mine were, this is what i did: i replaced my plugs with denso iridiums and it still didnt go away, next on the list will be swap the injectors, i did that and it went away for a day then came back
next on the list will be to check ur compression, which u might jump ahead and do that while ur swappin ur plugs,
well when i checked my compression, i had 54 lbs on cylinder 4 and 58 on cylinder 2 a big thumbs down
i think im gunna go with the cobbtuning 2.2 stroker
jdmimpreza 03-23-2003, 01:42 PM Plug or wire happend to my friend, dealer fixed it under warranty.
Jon [in CT] 03-23-2003, 07:41 PM Sorry, as the original problem that started this thread may have been solved, but
WHAT WERE THE TROUBLE CODES?
doogdog 03-24-2003, 02:37 PM I had a similar problem last week, had a CEL. Turned out the TPS was partailly unplugged, scared the hell out of me. Plugged it back in and problem solved, good luck.
DD
hpracingwrx 03-25-2003, 09:31 PM i was throwing P0302 and P0304 constantly and consistantly
k_thaosta 03-26-2003, 11:03 AM it's a vapor lock on the turbo... had it before... can cause probs to the injectors if not fixed soon...
WRXGuyInUSA 03-28-2003, 08:08 AM Sorry for the delay, been away from the computer.
Well, put brand new plugs in(stock replacements), and it runs better than before, but NOT good. It will rev up to redline, as long as it's slow, but as soon as I get into it, NO power, and pops/hesitation.
Today I'm going to take out the fuel pump, and make sure the sock isn't dirty, then after that,.... I'm stumped.
What the hell is Vapor lock on a Turbo?
Any other ideas?
BTW, checked the CEL codes... Mis-fire in cylinders 2 & 4
k_thaosta 03-28-2003, 08:52 AM hope this isn't too much for ya...
When i had this happen to me, it was described by the dealer tech as the turbo/engine not being cooled down properly, so the fluids would "congest" the water/oil lines going to/from the turbo, leaving the fluids in the turbo, it's bad cuz the fluids won't go anywhere since it is kind of a vacuum pushed by pumps.. just to keep it lubricated it good enough.. therefore it would create a hesitation with the engine that can be felt.. as you said, you got new plugs, so that would kinda relieve the problem becuz removing the spark plugs would enable air pressure to relieve the fluid lines... i don't know how the dealer fixed it, so i wouldn't know how to tell ya..
my fuel pump seem to of failed on me at the same time, and sometimes still does cuz you can hear a "bubbly" noise (like when you drink through a straw and just about done with a drink) sucking up the gas when you turn the ignition, not yet starting the car, therefore causing more hesitation and the CEL to come on with the misfire codes.. and yes, i've had a few times throughout the range of the gas being full, empty, half way... how i fixed that, i ran a gauge 4 amp wiring to the ground in the front to the rear... i was gonna put a system in my car had it all wired myself, but since the car doesn't really handle high audio power with stock options, i just hooked it to the ground..
weird solutions for me, but it helped me out and worked for me.. hope everything works out for ya..
