Ok, everytime I go to put my car away, I get out and close the door. Everytime the car shocks me, as if it were telling me to get back in and keep driving. Why is this? How do I fix it.

Kean 03-27-2003, 05:19 PM My last car and my current WRX does this as well. Touch part of the metal on the car as you exit and you won't get zapped. Orson 03-27-2003, 05:23 PM Increased use of silicon in tires (for less rolling resistance to improve gas mileage) has created a greater insulating effect in modern vehicles. Greater insulation of static electricity is one disadvantage. On the positive side, you car is now less prone to be struck by lightening.:p TaiChih 03-27-2003, 11:37 PM shameless plug:D http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=336784 DrD 03-28-2003, 12:39 AM Originally posted by Chris51080 Ok, everytime I go to put my car away, I get out and close the door. You should move somewhere with really low humidity... like New Mexico - static electricity heaven - just maintain contact with something metal on the outside of the car as you step out and you'll be fine. armand1 03-29-2003, 05:57 AM Spray some clothing anti-static spray over the front seats. Works surprisingly well. scooberoo 03-29-2003, 03:25 PM If you wear a wool coat, and this coat rubs against your seat cloth, its creates the static electricity. Wool makes a lot of static. I get zapped everytime i get out my car. Wear another coat of different material. stanton 03-30-2003, 05:00 PM Ah, yes, this subject comes back around like clock work. From previous research and posts by others: The static is between you and the car; typically caused by your clothing rubbing over the seat fabric. It happens more in dry weather (less conduction through the air), and happens more with wool and cotton clothes (jeans). Tip: polyester jumpsuits - oh yeah! A decade ago, when the high silica content, low rolling resistance tires were first introduced, there were car-to-ground static problems, but not so much any more. If this were still the case, you would be getting shocked at the toll booth or drive-through. In the past, I would hold the metal piece of the door, even grab onto the metal part of the key and tap the door after I've gotten out, but with the WRX, I'm getting zapped through the steering wheel before I even get up. Like armand1 said, anti-static spray works. Just a little goes a long way - also gets rid of the stale beer smell ;) I lightely wipe a dryer sheet over the seat every now and then. It's easy to tuck away for when you begin to need it again. cdvma 03-31-2003, 06:53 PM I never got zapped by my car until about 3 days ago...when I bought new shoes. I put my old pair on and didnt get zapped after a drive. I can only assume there is some plastic in the sole of the new shoe thats insulating me more. I suppose you could wear a grounding strap on the heel of your shoe :) Kean 03-31-2003, 07:11 PM Originally posted by cdvma I suppose you could wear a grounding strap on the heel of your shoe :) (hmmmm.......maybe there's some money in this idea? designer ESD straps with a WRX logo.......) ;) cdvma 03-31-2003, 07:21 PM Originally posted by Kean (hmmmm.......maybe there's some money in this idea? designer ESD straps with a WRX logo.......) ;) Its the DGK: Driver Grounding Kit, guaranteed +1whp because of better chassis grounding ! CirrusWRX 04-02-2003, 12:48 AM Since I upgraded my stock fabric to leather, I've been shock-free. But my car USED to do it, and my old '93 L wagon used to do it like mad, and my buddy's old 93 Turbo Legacy was like a lighting rod to his finger  heh - at least nobody asked if the "grounding mod" would alleviate the shocking scooberoo 04-02-2003, 12:48 AM how much did you pay for leather? FatJoe 04-02-2003, 07:22 PM Oh, I'll buy one, how much!! Sign me up!! CirrusWRX 04-02-2003, 11:48 PM Originally posted by scooberoo how much did you pay for leather? Got in on a group buy - usually runs every few months for about $600.00 full interior - you do the install yourself (or pay somebody else to do it!) and I got seat heaters for $180.00 too :D tazman976 04-15-2003, 02:22 AM I have noticed this to and when i'm waring certain shoes i get shocked. My 2 pairs of Sketchers shock and my Doc Martins don't. I think it has something to do with the sole's of the shoes. Matt... Adiliyo 04-16-2003, 02:21 PM this happens to me every so often (more so in the summer..ya it's virtually a perpetual summer in so cal :p ) but only in my cloth interior cars, i usually just hold on to the metal on the door on the way out, works about 80% of the time...oh does the DGK come in STi pink? i'm in  |
