View Full Version : UTEC Removal
lumpy 04-04-2003, 11:21 PM I damn near posted this in the Newbie forum to avoid abuse. Bear with me here...
I bought a used WRX with a TurboXS Stage 1 kit already on it. The long and short is, I need to take the car in for warranty work (threw a CEL for the first time tonight) and I want to remove the UTEC before I take it in. I'm certain that this is a piece of cake, but I have no instructions for the unit (again, bought the car used with the kit already on it).
Can you give me a quick "how to" and any things to watch out for? Any input is greatly appreciated.

David@Vishnu 04-05-2003, 01:00 AM just go to autozone and get that code pulled I bet its a useless emissions code of some type. go to TXS site and download the UTEC instructions very very easy

If the only reason you're bringing the car in is because of the CEL then have autozone pull the code for you. Then if its something serious you can bring it to the dealer. Chances are high that it is just an emmisions code as stated though.
Davenow 04-05-2003, 11:59 AM I third the Autozone vote.
And taking the UTEC out is a 10 min job. Gte the tinstructions and its cake

Why are you taking a modified car in for warranty work? Sounds like you are not ready for a modified car. The CEL is most likely due to the modified parts on the car and is a fact of life. Rather then trying to scam the dealer I suggest you purchase an OBD scan tool, retrieve the code's(plural because you will get more then one) and then learn to fix the car yourself. Otherwise I suggest you return the car to stock.

Thanks for the lecture "Dad". Sounds like you're not quite ready to play judge and jury.
I would not consider a UTEC and a simple muffler as "highly" modified. In fact, the only reason that I even considered buying this as a used car is the fact that I could return it to stock easily and I know the former owner very well. Unfortunately he was transferred and is no longer in the area, or he would be glad to show me a reverse install. BTW, I could not find the area to download instructions at TurboXS. I emailed their customer service when I bought the car in December and never got a response.
I asked a rather simple question about Subarus at a forum devoted to the subject (imagine that) so that I could save time and potential headache. I did not asked to be told what I should and should not drive. Check my birthdate. Not my first car, not my first modified car, yes my first turbo car.
Thank you for your input. I agree that it is likely something emissions related (usually is). I need to get under the hood, but the first step is to remove the UTEC.

lumpy 04-05-2003, 08:57 PM Appreciate the advice and the link to the manual. It looks like a clean install and pretty tough to screw up. I've swapped Integra ECU's into and out of Civics and CRXs many times before, just never a piggyback unit like this.
I'm likely going to go back to stock for the remaining 8,000 miles of my warranty, which will only take me about 3-4 months to rack up. I have no "baseline" on the car, as it has always been modded in the time that I have owned it.
Thanks again.

I couldn't agree with you more. I hate it when you ask a simple question and you get a lecture from the high and mighties. If you want to take your car in for warranty work, then by all means... don't let one dude's superior morality  stop you.

-Bob Here's an example of yet another recent arrival to the technical forums who's long on wrong opinion and short on right answers.
