View Full Version : i can't lose the knock, i need some help with these logs!
Tobey 04-07-2003, 06:45 PM alrighty, i am running a stage 1 right now with a greddy catback, bosst set to an even 16psi (by my defi boost gauge)......went from open loop down to closed loop, i am at 375 on my values and the abc is........ well it's set to hit 16psi! i can't get rid of my damn knock to save my life. i am switching over to a stage 2 soon with a bosal d/p and a new uppipe, but i want to get the jist of this first. i have pulled timing, added fuel, pulled MORE timing, added MORE fuel....... i think i have tried most everything and i am stumped. i am going to call txs tomorrow but i would like a wide variety of advice if possible. i clipped these from various runs so all can see the range of my knock. i can almost make it happen at will, here she is:

please tell me how to tune this CRAP out!! i am not so worried about the 1 counts, but i am getting some 8's and 7's!! :o honestly i want 0 cels forever. i am beginning to think i just have a noisey engine. any help would be much appreciated, thanks for listening.:disco:
Jduke 04-07-2003, 08:02 PM Well Im definatly not a expert with modifed maps... But perhaps your problem is with the EGT, do you have an EGT gauge? That could cause a CEL if your exhaust gas temperature is too high. Try going back to the stock Stage 1 map, and if you dont have one get a EGT gauge. And then re-tune.
Thanks,
john d.

i have an egt and my temp never goes over 1400 f unless i mash it in 5th gear, then i can get to 1500 f (which is where i usually shut the test down). on an 80mph 5th gear highway cruise or at wot i am under 1400 f...
but i think these are fairly normal temps? this is why i am baffled. boost is good, egt's are good and i am running basically a stage 1 car (should be straight forward). it's been cold here lately but a knock count of 8 kinda scares me.... should it?
Jduke 04-07-2003, 08:54 PM Tobey, I am running a stage 1 utec also, only mod is samco ic hoses, and I have never had knock. I live in the northeast area of vt, and it was 10f last night (coldest ist been since the utec install) and I've had no problems. Not sure what is going on, I guess you should just wait to hear from TurboXs, and take it easy till then. If I was to make a real uneducated guess I would think it had something to do with your greddy catback (did you have this before or after you got the utec?).

thanks for the info john. it's nice to know it is possible to run in cold temps with a utec and not knock. did you do any tuning?
this is why i think i have a loud engine. i have tried EVERYTHING! i started with a satge 1 plus injen, took it off. still knocking. added the greddy to my stock car, still knocking. took out some timing, added some fuel......... adjusted my boost down, turned it back up. this is really kicking my ass......
i have just started logging so i am hoping someone who has been there can give me some insight. i am having a hard time believeing that a stock stage 1 is knocking that bad. but what can i do? i have to beat the car to get it to knock so i can tune it out, only problem is, one of these times that knock is going to turn into a boom, then what? tobeys gets it in the pooper, that's what.
codean 04-07-2003, 09:16 PM Could you post a copy of your maps on here? I would like to know what they look like before I make any suggestions.
Jduke 04-07-2003, 09:21 PM I was just going to say we need to pm a specialist, thanks.
Tobey 04-07-2003, 09:28 PM give me 10 minutes! :D thanks!
codean 04-07-2003, 09:41 PM It looks like you are running fairly high boost for a stage one car. 15 psi would be a better number to shoot for. Also, your boost gauge might be reading 16 psi, but the utec is reading as high as 17.8 psi. One of them is off.
Tobey 04-07-2003, 09:41 PM here is my current map:

are you saying i am running at 17.8psi or are you using that as an example? how do you see that? i am curious because a lot of these numbers really don't mean much to me yet as i am just getting started. if i knew what these numbers meant exactly i might be a little better off rahter than buggin' the piss outta you guys! :p i mean, i know what 'map' stand for, but i don't know what range of number to shoot for, or what is a bad indication (using that column as an example only). i was told to go to 16psi by txs but if i am at 17.8 then something has to be adjusted!! at 4000rpms in 4th i generally spike to 17psi (by the gauge) and it hold steady at 16psi, so that's where i have kept it.
you said, 17.8 psi... wondering it that is a spike you are seeing and i am still running around 16.8ish(given a 1psi fudge factor)? which would mean i have to go down a turn on the abc at least to get under 16psi.
i want to thank you guys for the insight, it is really appreciated!
Tobey 04-07-2003, 10:00 PM i am also seeing (what i think is) high injector duty sometimes, on a stock car(basically)? is that........... right? i mean, my a/f ration is reading so rich there is no # designation for it, so i can't believe i need MORE fuel!?!?
it scares me looking at this knock readout that i am getting a '6' in 5th gear at 3300rpms @ 90% load. it doesn't seem like it should be like that (or maybe i am reading it wrong). i turned my abc down 1 turn for now it's cold out and i want to be safe. i will probably take the values down in the clb map and adjust the abc from there when i have some more time and daylight.
any other suggestions?
codean 04-07-2003, 10:19 PM ok...lets start off slowly. I personally think you are getting more boost then you think you are. Do you know how high above sea level you are?
Back off the boost a little bit. that should help out with some of the small det that your are getting.
It's a little hard to work off the log that you too because it varies so much. I would like to see a log where you start off at 2000rpm's in 2nd gear and floor it till 6800 rpm, shift into 3rd gear and go all the way to redline with your foot to the floor.

i turned the abc down 1 turn for now. i clipped and pasted from various logs so you guys could see the conditions in which my knock is happening. let me go digging in my logs and see if i can't find something that has a better range. it's funny because i can't really say it happens at such and such a time, every time, it's very inconsistant. but i'm sure the utec is seeing things and logging things that i am not seeing (obviously).
keep the suggestions coming. thanks again~
nmyeti 04-07-2003, 10:25 PM The boost is too high for sure, but in addition to that it appears that you've been trying to tune out knock with fueling adjustments when you should be reducing timing in the 80%-100% load zones.
Try this; go back to the stock stg1 map then take 1 degree out of the 80% load zone from 3000rpms to 7000rpms. Take 2 degrees out of the 90% from 3000 up and 3 degrees out of the 100% zone from 3000-7000.
Then start adjusting your fuel values. As a side note, you should NEVER see 100% load on Stg1 or 2 cars.

codean 04-07-2003, 10:25 PM Oh man.....please don't clip and paste!
No wonder I couldn't make any sence out of it!
And here was looking for shift points.
Listen to the man above me.....he knows his stuff. :D
Tobey 04-07-2003, 10:31 PM tell me: how are you guys are seeing my boost psi, so i can tune it right? the only thing i am seeing in this sea of numbers is my closed loop boost value of 375?
i am going out now to load the stock stage 1 map in and take the timing out in the 80-100 columns. i will get a better log tomorrow (snow permitting) and come back and hopefully have some better results.
please do tell how you guys are reading these numbers and what they mean. it would probably solve 80% of my problem. on a side note, i want you guys to know that i have tuned and wrenched forced induction cars before (one of my last cars was asupercharged civic si) so i'm not a complete idiot, it's just that i don't understand some of the labels, and what values i am shooting for on this animal.
again, thanks for the advice. please keep it coming!:disco:

HAHAHAHA!!! :o
sorry about that, i thought i was saving you guys from reading my logs all night!!
nmyeti 04-07-2003, 10:35 PM The 2nd number in datalog #1 is your MAP pressure.

 wow i guess my boost was too high!! how close is the utec for gauging boost readings (or map pressure)?
here's what i did tonight:
i re-loaded a base stage 1 map, closed loop, 375 values (like before) in the boost map, took -1 degree of timing from 70%-100%. i will get a full log tomorrow and see where i am at and adjust the boost accordingly, then start adjusting fuel/timing values after that. i think with these changes i will be close to 100%. i mean, if i was running boost that high that was probably 90% of the problem. i am guessing that the fiddling of fuel and timing was *perhaps* making it worse in some cases.
question though: looking at those log values, i am not hitting high boost when the big knock is coming up, can someone explain this?
nathan john and 'codean' thanks for the help so far. i will be back tomorrow (depending on mother nature and her evil ways).
bobsterswrx 04-08-2003, 12:18 AM You need to reduce the 375 down so that you get a lower max boost. I would not fool with fuel, just pull timing if you need to at the new boost level. Looks to me like you are getting knock as the turbo is spooling which is common. start with the boost level lower (appox 14.5-15psi) and work your way up carefully.
Bob
lgkahn 04-08-2003, 08:36 AM The second column map (is your boost psi) see where it when over 17.6 pounds.. this is too much boost and that will definately cause knock..
Tobey 04-08-2003, 10:50 AM most of the high boost levels are from me mashing is in 5th gear, that's why i am under 4k when the boost is high on that log (not a complete log mind you, it's clipped and pasted from various logs).
my results today are still showing knock with my abc turned down 1 turn and i pulled some timing from the 70%+ columns. i didn't have ttim to fully check them, but it looks like my boost might still be a bit high so i will bring my values down to 360ish and see what happens.
also i never altered my boost values @ certain rpm intervals, should i be tapering my boost to hit the targets specified by txs on the utec instructions? i just set it for the 4th gear @ 4000 rpm. it's hard to do 5500 rpms in 4th on public roads.....
what is the best way to log something so i can get a good idea of what's going on? i can do a 30-80 sprint on the highway but that won't even get me through third, and i'm not going any higher than that in a 65mph zone (for obvious reason, safety included). also i am seeing knock in 5th so what would be the best way to log that?
thanks again for the advice, keep it coming! :alien:
mbiker97 04-08-2003, 11:52 AM You should absolutely set your boost to hit the targeted TXS numbers. You also want to change your TPS setting so that you read 100% throttle at WOT (fourth column in logger 1).
The reason you might knock in a quick boost change scenario (like 5th gear) is that the factory ecu's short term fuel trim cannot adjust to the proper fueling. There is no way around it except to ease into the throttle more rather than just punching it.
bobsterswrx 04-08-2003, 02:26 PM Pull your boost # to 300 or below, close the abc. Start with the stock stg 1 map and see if you are knocking also check your boost. I would look for appox 15 psi with abc closed (in 3rd gear). You may need to increase the 300 up or down to get appox 15 psi (all cars are different). I am assuming that you are running at least 93 oct fuel! Dont fool with the fuel map. Once you get to 15 psi w/out knock then open the abc one turn at a time until you get 16 psi max. in a 3rd gear pull from 3,000 to 7,000 rpm. If you get knock then pull one deg of timing in the area of the knock starting at least 250 rpm ahead of the knock. If you are good at 16 psi in third then you will probably be at 16.5 psi or more in 4th and 5th. It is a gradual process, be careful! I have three maps and have not changed the stg4 fueling yet. I will wait until I can get on a dyno to trim fuel. Good luck.
Bob
Tobey 04-08-2003, 03:48 PM talked with phil from txs today for a good half hour and got a better understanding on how to read these numbers and what to change. it is a lot to absorb in one sitting, but i do think i retained a decent chunk of that info.
i reduced all my clb values to 335 and brought my abc up one turn. i am going to log my ride home and start fresh. i have not touched my fuel map so i am basically running a stage 1 map. i will post more tonight, thanks again guys~
