I know that subaru prides itself on it reverse engineered parts, and good percentage of overall "compatibility". But, has anyone swapped a tranny only into an rs? Preferably an upgrade from the stock one:cool:

The transmission tunnel in the new body style is bigger than on teh GC/GF/GM chassis cars. I'm sure you could make it fit, but I'm equally sure it will require cutting some of the transmission tunnel. Not worth the cost/effort, IMO. Custom work like that is sure to be $$$$$$$$.

I have one in my 99RS . You don't have to cut out the tunnel. Just a little "tapping" to clear the shift mechanism. ;)

Only major modification is either shortened the stock RS prop shaft or get the 6-speed one. I opted for the first, it cost me $150 Cdn. to shortened and re-balanced.

I came across a one-time deal for a new JDM 6-speed. I had it planned for a while but the funds were low. I love the 6-speed, considering I had a Sti RA 5-speed before. Its not fun sitting at 4200rpms doing 100km/h on a long 5 hour trip !

If you had the whole drivetrain including the diff and driveshaft, it should be pretty much a drop in, exept the shift linkage clearance maybe, and perhaps a spot the put the DCCD switch if you had one with DCCD :p

I dont know about the axles... Depends on if they are a different length or not. I know they are beefier though...

Ah-ha! Just the thread I was looking for. So, mating the 6MT to the EJ25 is just plug and play, or what? I need to ditch this 4EAT, and I'd like to swap over to a 6MT with the SureTrac. Also, for whoever did this, did you just use a WRX clutch and flywheel, or what?

There are 2 different 5th/6th ratios. The JDM has the shorter ones , 5th(1.062) / 6th(.842) . So at 120kmph , I'm buzzing around 3500rpm.

Shafts , I used back my stock RS front shafts. The splines are the same. Problem with the Wrx ones is that they are longer. It may be okay, but I am not sure about the plunge distance if it would bottom out in the inner joint.

Clutch, I am actually using a stock Wrx pressure plate with a Helix 4-puck disc, center-sprung.
