I bet we see several monochromatic colors, as the monochromatic silver is by far the most popular color, because it helps hide the cladding. I wonder if that will be a Baja turbo exclusive? Bob LinuxGuy 04-10-2003, 10:32 PM Theres a little blub of it on the last page of drive magazine. Kevin Jon [in CT] 04-11-2003, 11:37 PM As was mentioned above, the current issue of Subaru's Drive magazine mentions the Turbo Baja (see http://www.mypersonaldrive.com/Spr03_NewTurbos.htm):COMING SOON ... Subaru has just announced plans to produce a turbocharged version of the Baja. Look for more information on this exciting new model in future issues of Drive.I wonder where and when this announcement was made. Can anyone point me to a Subaru press release about the turbo Baja? mh_WRX 04-14-2003, 08:38 AM The Turbo Baja will be at the NYAS. Subaru has already planned it's debut. Pictures and specs will be out that Thursday. NeoGeo 04-14-2003, 10:49 AM Autoweek says it'll go on sale this fall. I assume this engine is similar to the STi? If so, subaru is really expanding their turbo engine line! Would this mean cheap 2.5L turbo swaps? bluesubie 04-14-2003, 11:10 AM Originally posted by Jon As was mentioned above, the current issue of Subaru's [i]Drive magazine mentions the Turbo Baja (see http://www.mypersonaldrive.com/Spr03_NewTurbos.htm):I wonder where and when this announcement was made. There was a blurb in an interview with someone at SOC (I think), then I saw a link on subaru.com where they mentioned it in a story about SIA. -Dennis AGscooby 04-14-2003, 01:53 PM Originally posted by NeoGeo Autoweek says it'll go on sale this fall. While the 2.5T would boost sales no doubt, I think it would have as much to do with the monotone color scheme if that's what we're getting. How much more overpriced will the Baja Turbo be over the Baja? Anyone see $27k in the future? AG May the GT-B with you! mh_WRX 04-15-2003, 12:58 PM Subaru Introduces Baja(TM) Turbo at New York International Auto Show What: Subaru of America, Inc., the only manufacturer to have all-wheel drive as standard equipment on every vehicle they make, will introduce the Baja(TM) Turbo at the New York International Auto Show. Baja Turbo is the third version of the brand's unique crossover vehicle that blends the versatility and ruggedness of a compact 4-door pickup truck with the driving dynamics, safety and comfort of a passenger car. Who: Bill Cyphers, Vice President of Sales, Subaru of America, inc. to present When: Thursday, April 17, 2003 -- The reveal is scheduled for 1:25 p.m. ET Where: Subaru Booth (level 1), Jacob K. Javits Convention center, New York, N.Y. About Subaru of America, Inc. Subaru of America, Inc. is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Fuji Heavy Industries Ltd. of Japan. Headquartered near Philadelphia, the company markets and distributes all-wheel drive Subaru vehicles, parts and accessories through a network of nearly 600 dealers across the United States. Subaru is the only manufacturer to have all-wheel drive as standard equipment on every vehicle they make. Subaru has been the best-selling import wagon in America for the past 20 years, based on R.L. Polk & Company new vehicle retail registration statistics calendar year-end 2002. Albert 04-15-2003, 04:08 PM Strange they would call it the THIRD version, since the supercharged prototype was never a version - it didn't even have the same name. goneskiian 04-15-2003, 04:24 PM I don't think they're counting the concept version. IIRC they already have the Baja and the Baja Sport. One with leather and one without. Not sure what else differentiates them though. Albert 04-15-2003, 08:43 PM Duh, that makes better sense. Thanks. mh_WRX 04-17-2003, 03:25 PM Subaru Introduces Baja(TM) Turbo at New York International Auto Show; Third Version of Unique Crossover Model Powered by a 210-Horsepower Engine http://www.theautochannel.com/content/news/2003/04/17/159598.1.jpg NEW YORK, April 17 -- Subaru of America, Inc., the only manufacturer to have all-wheel drive as standard equipment on every vehicle they make, today introduced the Baja Turbo at the New York International Auto Show. Baja Turbo is the third version of the brand's unique crossover vehicle that blends the versatility and ruggedness of a compact 4-door pickup truck with the driving dynamics, safety and comfort of a passenger car. Powered by a 210-horsepower 2.5-liter intercooled turbo boxer engine, Baja Turbo gives new definition to "sport plus utility," adding an element of driving fun absent in compact truck-based vehicles. Baja Turbo is the third new turbocharged model that Subaru has introduced for 2004 MY: Forester 2.5 XT was introduced at the Chicago Auto Show, and the 300-horsepower Impreza WRX STi at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit in January. These three models, along with the Impreza WRX, underscore the brand's high-performance product strategy that's reinforced by more than a decade of rally-winning experience. All turbocharged Subaru models feature a functional hood scoop that feeds outside air to an engine-mounted intercooler. The Baja models follow in the pioneering tire tracks of the Subaru Outback, the World's First Sport-Utility Wagon(R). Outback sparked the trend in crossover vehicles that combine positive attributes of a sport-utility vehicle with the handling, ride comfort and fuel efficiency of a passenger car. The Baja models deliver many of the practical benefits of a 4-door compact pickup truck, but with the kind of responsive handling and ride comfort that eludes truck-based vehicles. The practical size makes Baja easy to maneuver, while still offering cargo-carrying versatility not possible in a sedan or wagon. Baja models share a family resemblance with Outback, including enlarged front fenders, four-beam multi-reflector headlights (two-beam on Baja Sport), large foldable mirrors and integrated foglights with stone guards. In addition to the functional hood scoop, Baja Turbo is distinguished by new-design 16-inch aluminum-alloy wheels. Switchback(TM) System Gives Baja the Work Ethic of A Pickup The key to the Subaru Baja models' versatility is the Subaru-designed Switchback(R) system that provides the ability to reconfigure the rear seating area, as well as the cargo bed, to meet a variety of needs when transporting people and cargo. Subaru designed Baja with the active-lifestyle person in mind. The rear seatbacks fold down to add interior storage, and the Switchback panel between the cargo bed and interior section can be lowered to then extend the cargo area length. The expandable 41.5-inch pickup bed can handle a variety of outdoor equipment, such as mountain bikes, surfboards or scuba gear. Lowering the tailgate and attaching the optional Subaru accessory bed extender lengthens the bed to over 58 inches. Then, lowering the rear seat and Switchback cargo bed door can provide a maximum load floor length of over 90 inches for carrying long items. Subaru equipped the Baja bed for rugged usage. An integrated bed liner provides durability and allows easy cleaning, and other useful features include bed sport bars, a dual-illumination bed light and four tie-down hooks. A swing-down rear license plate bracket, carried over from the ST-X concept vehicle, keeps the plate visible when driving with the tailgate lowered. Baja also comes standard with roof rails and cross bars, and Subaru offers attachments for carrying bicycles, skis, kayaks and snowboards. The Comfort Zone Inside, Baja Turbo is more like a sport sedan than a pickup. All Baja models are configured strictly as 4-passenger vehicles. The rear seating area provides each passenger with the feeling of personal space and comfort, further distinguishing Baja models from the more utility-oriented models on the market. Dark smoke tinted rear door glass and rear window glass reinforce this ambience. A rear-seat console box in the seat bottom integrates dual cupholders. Idjiit 04-17-2003, 03:55 PM Same-color body cladding, whoo hoo! Makes me wish I'd taken better care of my WRX so I could actually sell it to someone! Doh! :D SpiderSebring 04-17-2003, 04:57 PM The cladding isn't monochrome...it's a dark gray or graphite color but looks a lot better than before. And w/ 8.4" of ground clearance, VTD, and 235 lb/ft of torque at 3600 rpms I just might change my mind about this thing. ;) Idjiit 04-17-2003, 05:06 PM Where did you pick up those other specs? Is that a Forester front end on the Baja? Black cars look so good, but I will never, I repeat NEVER again own a black car. No matter what you do, or how carefully you do it, you will get marks. Kevin Rotorflyr 04-20-2003, 11:25 PM I agree, black car's take a lot of time to keep clean, I have had more then one, and actually like black for a car, but then again, I don't necessarily care if it looks dirty, so it isn't a huge issue for me. As for the Baja, the looks of it are starting to grow on me more and more, but Im still not sure how much I really like it, and still don't think it's as practicle as a "truck substitute" as it could/should be.
