Ok, I've been reading countless threads about WRX swaps for 3.5 hours now. The biggest problem from my understanding is the wiring part. My question is there an easier way around this, I'm a little confused because I keep reading about JDM swaps, and the RHD -> LHD conversion causing problems. How hard is it to swap a USDM motor in and what all would I need. Anything that makes this process easier (I read something about using a Link ECU that was made for the WRX swap but didn't find much details about this???)

Thanks
Kyle

The problems you run into with RHD vs. LHD is that the harnesses are laid out backwards. There's no problem in swapping a motor from a RHD car to a LHD car except the wiring.

Swapping a USDM motor into a GC/GM body is simple except again for the wiring. You'll need to get the harnesses (engine & firewall aka dash) and splice them together.

Do a search in this forum for yamarocket630's swap. Very good information.

Some stuff you'll need for the swap are:

Complete motor/ecu
Wiring harnesses (engine & firewall)
WRX or Legacy turbo crossmember
WRX fuel pump

Man...my mind is fried right now. I can't think of what else you'd need. I've got a list that's on my kitchen table that's 250 miles away right now.

check out i-speed usa....chris has been a big help to me in understanding what I need to do.

They have a lot of good info on what you need and a break down of the time required to do the wiring.
Good luck, Micah
I'm paying to have my wiring done!!

I did exactly what you want to do. One thing that definatly made things easier was to get a vishnu TEC II kit. The TEC II makes the wiring bit about 1000x easier.

kool really?? i was thinking about getting the autronic engine management...but i know that the TEC 2 needs to be totally wired up compared to the Link's plug and play ability....was this with a JDM motor or a USDM WRX motor....i was thinking about getting a JDM and going with an aftermarket ECU....hopefully this can make the wiring part a little less painful....thanx

I'll be having the joy of doing this in the somewhat near future with my legacy. (knocking on wood anyway) I've read you can take the entire wrx harness and put it into your rs. Or you could cut and spice. There is always the option of going with a stand alone but that's really spendy and something i won't be doing. I think the last but maybe the best option for some would be cutting the old rs harness at the ecu and wiring in the wrx computer and adding a few wires. You don't have to take out the dash to do this, but then there are a bunch of wires under the dash you don't need and could take out.
You might be able to send you harness to somebody and have them prep it for you. I think if you're able to take out the dash then you might as well do it yourself and save a bundle.

Problem with aftermarket engine management is emissions. Some places may just test your OBD-II system for the emissions and if you have a single CEL then you will fail. There is only one engine management system that I know of that allows the OBD-II system aside from a remapping of the stock ECU and its not anything for Subarus.

i think it's i-speed that said they can prep your harness for install, 750 i think it cost. Good luck.

I have been doing some research about swaping a USDM EJ20 into my RS. If I can ever save up enough money Im getting a Subaru mechanic to do mine. He knows about the WRX and the RS, he said he would do it on the side. I really have no worries. I also heard from www.teaguesauto.com. Dale Teague told me that somebody was coming out with a plug and play for the RS-WRX swap. I dont know how expensive it will be.

Good luck
