View Full Version : drums to discs
donbaru 04-15-2003, 06:48 PM Thinking about converting to rear disc brakes on my 93L, and maybe use cross drilled discs.
Any suggestions on where to buy (cheap parts) for this conversion.
Thanks
schnell 04-15-2003, 10:37 PM There is a page out there by a guy who upgraded his OBS - a late 90's model I believe.
Link to drum/disc conversion. (http://wac.addr.com/auto/obs/disc/disc.html)
As for cross drilled, search nasioc and you'll find that cross drilled rotors are not that great. Slotted are better, but even then there are arguments. Regardless, upgrade the fronts before the backs, since the front does most braking.
Good luck.

PS most of this info is on this forum already, a few searches will yield many results.
stentorian 04-16-2003, 03:51 PM What setup do you plan to use for your rears? Are you leaving the front stock?
I plan to upgrade my entire brake system, Subaru 4pot front and 2pot rear, but that is when I do the power upgrade as well, heh...Otherwise my EJ18 and its lack of power with that will stop in a blink of your eye, hahaha

Aspen 04-16-2003, 07:43 PM I might be selling my rear rotors/calipers since I will be upgrading soon. I also might know a place that has rear spindles too.
linsavy 04-17-2003, 03:24 PM A couple of guys have done the swap without spindles from the disc car. They just swap the backing plate. Saves taking the axle bolt and axles out and disconnecting the strut and links.

$600 for the entire swap front and rear including rotors, calipers, pads, lines, hubs, and parking brake cable. You can go with either WRX or the Outback H6 brakes.
I actually found the front and rear rotors and calipers for much cheaper but for the record, I'm using the WRX brakes.

geronimo66 04-17-2003, 09:46 PM do they offer all this as a package or did you just request the parts from them?
If so do you have a complete lise of the needed parts?
Greg Sharpe 04-18-2003, 12:04 AM On a similar note... Those converting a FWD from drums to discs in the rear should swap the entire rear hub/spindle. This will allow you to use the commonly available struts (STi, Tein, etc.), as the FWD rear struts have vastly different mouting holes.
When converting an AWD drum setup to discs, you'll need the parking brake cables from the discs, too.

If you want a factory fit, then yes but you can also modify the existing drum brake cables to work also. This is what I did. ;)
geronimo66 04-18-2003, 02:04 AM bump for my question
stimpy 04-18-2003, 08:48 AM If you called them up and asked for the rear disk conversion, they should know what you are talking about.
It should come with calipers, rotors, and pads for front and rear, hubs/bearings and parking brake cables, and brake lines for rear.
You will want to double check this with them of course, since I didn't actually order from them. The guys there are usually very knowledgable though.
I haven't heard of people using the drum cables before, but I have heard of people using the RS/WRX disc parking brake cables or the Legacy cables.

Scoobyslack1 04-18-2003, 11:40 AM I'll be doing this on sunday, I hope :)
Also think about upgrading your lines to SS since you'll have the backs off and the fluid too.

yeah its not too bad
go buy some liquid wrench and spray them down the bolts tonight...
i also put in RS latterlinks at the same time and added a sway bar
i ended up removing the seats (all of the seats) and center consol to get access to the parking brake cable attachemnt
