I have a situation with my 2-car garage. I have a 4-post lift that my '95 Miata is on. What I would like to do is when I feel like driving the Miata for awhile I can put the WRX wagon on the lift and have the Miata underneath.

Is there a way to get the garage door opener to stop at a lower setting so it will not hit the WRX? I was thinking of some kind of switch, so when the roller on the door hits it, it would stop. But it cannot be a power switch because I need to close the door afterwards. More to the point, if it's a pain in the rear my wife will not like it one bit. Somehow the WRX has turned into her car! What happened to ours?

Thank you for any insight to this dilemma. :D

Hi there,

I think it depends on what type of garage door you have. If you have a newer one, there are some poteniometers that are used to adjust the up and down positions of the door. Perhaps a few turns of one of those would be sufficient. If not, then it gets a bit more complicated. I am not sure if the door has an existing switch that trips when it goes all the way up, or if the motor is set to turn a certain number of revolutions which correspond to "up". If there is a switch, then all you would have to do is move it.
Doe this make sense?

Yes, I do understand what you are saying. And, unfortunately we have an old Sears unit. I guess this is not going to be easy. But then again, nothing I do is easy.

Thanks,

You could get a small pressure switch and put in the track so when the door hits it, it closes the contacts and stops the door. I'm sure you can wire it to your existing door opener if it has any type of safety switch like that already in it.

Its actually quite easy, if you ONLY want the door to open at that one spot, Make a switch, or buy a rocker switch and keep it inline with the door opener current, keep it closed, until it hits the switch to the open position. Closing the circuit and stopping the door so the Miata can fit out and the WRX doesn't get hit... If you want to make the door open fully, just take the switch out of the track and keep it open.
Man I wish that I had those kind of problems..
