im going to be selling my 98 legacy GT
i love the car but the tuner support or rather LACK of is making me see the buttery goodness of the impreza...and insurance is insane

i need a good project car to build i want 4 door and MUST have AWD and 5 speed...sunroof and power options would be nice but not necessary

im thinking of building a phase II 2.5t from the crank up to drop in it but maybe a ej20t. i want to have 300+hp

i can rebuild a right of from a salvage yard or find one thats older and cheeper or blown motor

i need to know what year and modle would best sute my needs any help would be sweet thanks.

A way to reduce labor and parts costs on a swap would be to find the cheapest MY00+ (rear LSD) RS sedan you can find. Then swap the motor only with a USDM WRX. Don't worry about the tranny, they're the same. In fact, the only tranny worth worrying about is one from an STi RA, because those are the only ones that got stronger gears. Other than that, it's just different ratios.

You can easily tune a USDM EJ20T to 300+ hp.

Be aware that the SEDAN is actually worth about $1000 more than the coupe in the used car market.... that is if the number of doors is the ONLY difference.... (at least last time I checked my car was worth more than a 2 door exactly like it)....

Yes, but mechboy specifically said he wanted a sedan and said a sunroof would be nice.

An RS sedan fits those two requirements nicely. ;)

i think i want something older than a 98 probably something from salvage. i have all the skills and tools to do all the body and mechanical work... im a machinist by trade so making stuff fit is not really a problem..ie rear rotors to disks.. i want to know what a good year to look at would be without a nasty interior and that is a good alround build up without too many hassels on interchangeability.. i also read that 95 and newer the design changed and the car is much heaver.. does anyone know about this

how can i check if i have LSD. how many LSD's are there on a AWD car.. front and rear? or just center.. or... also if you kept one side of the wheels stationary and moved the other two. would that harm the AWD system. how can i check if something did break? (for future reference.)

Not many cars came with a lsd. You can make one if you are so inclined. Get a lsd from an older turbo rx and swap the ring and pinon gears.
I don't think any usdm car came with a front lsd. I could be wrong on that though.... Most if not all the 2.5 rs's came with a rear lsd. I'm not sure about the the 2.5 rs strength of the 5mt compared to the usdm wrx 5mt. There has been much debate about this.
If you want cheap then buy an older legacy and mod the hell out of it.
