OK. Which vendor is going to work on the first engine/transmission swap kit for the 2002-2003 WRXs with the new 2.5L STi? Will obviously require some new engine management as well differentials. Although it would probably cost the same to just buy the new car, unless they can use the old engine transmission and give decent resale swap in the deal. Seems like there would be a demand for the old engines for some of the old RSs.

Seems to me that you would just use the STi wiring and ecu (plus the gas pedal and wiring for the electronic throttle).

I am quite interested to see what people start cooking up with the Forester XT and Baja turbo motors.

I am thinking about doing a 2.5 turbo swap into an older Impreza, should be pretty straight forward and lots of fun.

The motors are not much different than the standard NA EJ25.. only they are semi-decked, better pistons, an more web support from the block. and AVCS..

I was thinking a harness conversion from the engine, and any minor mechanical mods necessary to make the conversion would make it somewhat plug and play. Work out the bugs and source the engines/transmissions, and it could be a good buisness. Any vendors looking into this?

Also the STi looks a bit heavier than the 2002. I like the look of my 2002 and I'm not ready to part with it. This would be a good option if made simple and somewhat economical. Should be a demand for the trade in engine for guys beefing up there subarus with the old WRX drivetrain.

sorry for the noob question but can you still get used engines from Japan?

I remember my dad once got one for his car and it was dirt cheap and had 30,000 miles on it. I think the Japanese have to switch them out after so many miles.

not sure of engine condition at time of purchase (i know first hand :()
across the pond shipping is slow and expensive
less torque
harness is built for the wrong side of the car
with ecutek/access ecu stock usdm ecus are easy to have tuned
oh and a usdm swap is LEGAL even in california

How big of a problem is the ECU being on the wrong side? I just bought a JDM STi engine, and I'm trying to take note of what I will need to make it work in a GC8 chassis (it's the newest engine, Ver 7?). I have the ECU and wiring and the block itself, I'll be picking up the TMIC and turbo shortly (the seller wanted to sell them seperately). Other than that, I think all I will need is STi engine and tranny mounts (why not, if it's already out), some Euro STi gauges (for the MPH readout), and a shop to swap it out.
Am I missing anything (I'm sure I am)?

How much was it? In what condition and where did you get it?

I'm in Japan right now, had a friend with a Japanese bank account buy it for me off of the Yahoo! auctions here.
It's brand new, about 500km on it, minus the turbo and IC. Paid 250,000 JPY (~$2100) for it. I get free shipping home from here to the states (perk of the military). That's why I decided to get it here, sort of a once in a lifetime opportunity to get it that cheap in that good of condition. After I get the intercooler and turbine, should come out to less than $3000.
