View Full Version : driving light conversion

I think I'd like to convert the fog lights on the WRX to driving lights. I figure they are more practical. I do a whole lot more driving at night than I ever will in fog. I think I can count the times I've needed fog lights in the past ten years on one hand.
Does anyone know of driving lights that would fit? Most headlights are inadequate for high speed driving.

Here you go, some good stuff here from Scoobysport.

Just what I had in mind!
Thanks.

P.S. Wish those HID's weren't so damned expensive.

$900 really isn't too bad for Hella HID lights. Just imagine what they would do for your visibility at night. Can you really put a price on that kind of safety? Just something to think about.

True enough. And that is about as cheap as any HID conversions I've seen for any car. It will go on my list and might even be the 2nd change I do to the car, right after 17" wheels and good rubber.

The regular Cibies are pretty amazing, and I only have 100 Watt bulbs. I see deer all the time on my drive to and from work, so good lighting is essential.

The stock foglight location is less than ideal though, as a large part of the light is bounced off the road.

Highly recommended, and not too bad at $300-400 for the whole kit.

Rather than costly HID lamps, I think I'd go for the Hella FreeForm Reflector circular lamps. They should fit right into the stock openings and are bright! Also, I plan to replace the stock headlamp bulbs with Hello Optilux 80/100.

Anyone have these Cibies lights installed on the WRX? And how do you like em?

I have the Hell freeforms the FF200's damn they are bright as anything with just the 55 watt H3 bulbs. I just cant figure out how to mount em on my WRX... You can see really really far with them, great off road and on road. Just use the driving lights with your high beams only, regardless of angle they ar blinding to oncoming traffic. http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/cool.gif

I have ordered the 130w Cibies from Scoobysport. They should be here any day now. Will post when installed. I hope they live up to my 130w Hella 4000's on my other car.

I too drive home from work on county highways at midnight.

Tip: Wire up the driving light relay to the highbeam wire.

I don't want to get you too excited, but read this: http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/Forum12/HTML/000371.html

Wow! and only ~$450 for the pair.

I e-mailed Ken Beard about them, as they're brand new and not on his web site yet.

I'm not so interested in replacing my foglights (with the lowbeams on, they do help significantly for lighting) but would like driving lights with the highbeams on...

Any kits to do this? (Is it legal to simply bypass the relay that turns the foglights off when highbeams are on?)

With the highbeams on, I get decent enough distance, but can't see anything at all upclose, or beside me. With lowbeams, I can see pretty good up close, but can't see distance.

Jon,
Checked out that link and it looks really cool. Problem is I cringe at cutter and drilling. =)

I should have the conversion to Cibie Oscar SC 55w or 100 w in the WRX done by tomorrow.
I did my own kit using a custom aluminium bolt on bracket into which th Cibie snaps in. I did not want to redrill the bumper and plate since I am trying to keep the car very clean. Becareful as to which kit you get as the 130 w is way to hot for the extra light you get over the 100w bulb. Also the nice thing with the custom bracket and Oscars is that you can still cover them with the foglight covers by STI. I will keep you guys informed of how this all fits. It is also my intention to use some urethane rubber to keep the humidity and water out away from the light.

A little better but not much. Comet 200FF Xenons are $749 at PUMA Performance Unlimited (http://www.puma-access.com) .

Bad news. I just got the price from Ken: $764 for the kit (two lamps plus wiring). I guess the price on Scoobynet was per lamp. Ken said he'd have a pair and demo them at Ski Sawmill next Friday.

That the price for the Comet 200 Xenons?
Ouch that is painful. If they work REALLY well though then I guess it would be a long term investment. Maybe getting a group buy together? Something like a 25% discount would rock.
