Dealer=Van Bortel
CE light went on around 200-300 miles. Dealer on 3/21, codes:
P1443 (vent control selenoid)
P0303 (misfire in #3)
I had filled the tank with the engine running 1 day before the light came on.
CE light again on 3/22. Dealer again on 3/23 at 725 miles. This time P0303. The dealer contacted SOA and was told to swap the injectors in cylinders 1 and 3. No problem since then, currently at 1800 miles.
Both P0303 codes occured at idle. I was sitting in a parking lot in both cases.

Date: Middle of night on drive home from pickin up car in AL (March 20th).
Miles: About 400. After second fill-up.
Resolution: Tightened cap and light went off after a few miles and several starts periodically while I slept at a rest area (Had to start it to heat up cabin every hour or so for a few hours). Will have code checked at next service. (EDIT: Actually I might just wait till I get it tuned...if I remember. I'm pretty sure it was a gas cap problem.)
Dealer: Madison Square Imports, Huntsville, AL. Will have it serviced while living in MD at Heritage Motors, Owings Mills, MD.
Sorry about not having a code, but at least maybe this will help you get a count of the number of CE problems.

Update from my dealer:
The dealership brought in two techs from Subaru's tech facility in Morestown to look into the rough idling and poor acceleration. (The CEL did not come back on after the new O2 sensor went in but performance was still lacking) They started switching out parts to see if they identify the cause - which turned out to be the Fuel Pressure Regulator. One of the techs will be running to Cherry Hill on Monday to pick up a new one.

ANZAC_1915 04-09-2001, 04:01 PM ttt - I spoke with the regional (NW) SOA service person and he said he was not aware of SOA HQ issuing a TSB on this problem.
From my limited calls, dealers in this area are only just beginning to get aware of it (parts guy at Carter sounded like he just got the clue to order a few more valves, they don't have any).
It seems SOA will have to wait to see a lot of calls to the tech hotline and a lot of this part ordered under warranty to figure out there is a larger problem.
My light went off this morning.

*Carter Subaru, Seattle,WA
*Code P0303, misfire on cylinder 3
*Dealer is replacing sparkplug as I write this. I will talk to him about swapping injectors between cylinder #1 and #3 as I suspect that the plug isn't the problem.
RESULT: They replaced defective sparkplug. I now have 1800 miles and no problems with missing or CE light since fix. Also worth noting. They had to order the sparkplug and said at the time there were only 26 available in US. Hopefully this will change. So it was in the shop 4 days just for sparkplug.

Off at 2100 Miles, this I attribute to the fact that I have started the car 4 times since the light came on.

Happened the first time that I ran the AC.

* I was lucky as a Subaru Technical Rep was at the dealership when I brought my car in for the 2nd CEL. He said that the cam angle relative the the crank position is what is causing the fault code. They don't know why some WRXs have this prob and others don't but the number is substantial and they are working on fixing the problem. It is a problem but the car is in no danger of being harmed he noted. What's interesting is that the light came on under hard acceleration both times. OB2 software takes a snap shot of what the engine was doing at the time of the fault. It was at 6750 RPM @ 44 KPH or wide open in 1st gear. He didn't imply that i was doing anything wrong but did state this. I drive like this every day and this car should be able to take it! He told me to reset the computer by cycling the key on an off 4 times and that the fault codes will be stored for them to check later.
The CEL light came back on once again later that evening under the same driving style but the light cleared itself.
I hope this helps everyone out.

Today, my dealer told me that the part they ordered for me, a vent control solenoid, was not coming in because SOA says that a replacement is not needed.
Has anyone with the same code hear the same thing from their dealer?
The thing that really pisses me off is they knew about this for 3 weeks and never called to tell me that I didn't need a replacement part. It took four days of my calling before finally telling me that they never sent for a part.
SOA will definitely be hearing from me.

In all three incidents, the engine was started warm, and the car was parked in sunlight in warm weather (70-85 degrees)with no sensation of a misfire (the machine runs beautifully). I have always used 93-94 octane gas. The dealer will be taking it apart on 4/30 to run diagnostics unless they hear from SOA.
PLEASE, PLEASE don't don't hesitate in telling your dealer if your CEL comes on--I suspect that this is an ECM issue and will only be resolved with a replacement/reburn.

The tech said there are still no TSB's on this--SOA hasn't even sent out shop manuals yet. My sedan does run rough and/or hesitate occasionally between 2-3k RPM, but it is intermittent. The tech did mention that the solenoid seemed inop--could this cause stumbling or hesitation?
Later that day...CEL still off but hesitation remains. Even more noticeable when turbo is spooling up between 3k and 4k RPM. Still intermittent--seems to be more noticeable under load (accel. up hill).

Short term fuel trim 6.25%
Long term fuel trim 0.0%

Scottie 06-04-2001, 10:08 AM I called my local Subaru dealership (Mitchel Subaru - Canton, CT)and told them what code I had. They then called SOA.
SOA said the ECU had to be pulled and sent down to Cherry Hill for "Recalibration". The Service manager went on to say it had to do with an error in programming that portion of the code. Something to do with that control loop/circuit not being programmed for positive pressure (i.e. Boost). Pretty big oversight if you ask me.
Also, since the MAP sensor readings from my OBD II scan tool reach as high as 58 in.HG, it's a pretty safe assumption that the readings are absolute pressure not gage. Thus the freeze frame pressure was negative relative to atmospheric.

Scottie 06-04-2001, 02:48 PM I'm using the EASE scan tool software for Windows on an older IBM 760XL Thinkpad notebook computer.
The software comes with an interface that connects between your computer and your car's OBD II diagnostic port.
The EASE software and interface is rather expensive and not quite as useful as I thought it would be. My biggest gripe is not really with the EASE software itself, but the OBD II specifications. The more parameters you scan the slower the update rate. For instance, scanning Timing advance, RPM, Caluated Load, MAP, Throttle position, Short term fuel trim, long term fuel trim, and O2 sensor voltage the parameters only update once every 2-3 seconds. Scanning just two parameters, Timing advance and RPM, it improves to about .25-.5 seconds. Still not fast enough for some of the things I'm trying to do.
With all that said, you would probably be better off with something cheaper like the Harrison R&D scan tool for Palm OS. This allows you to retrieve most of the same data as the EASE software, just minus the fancier graphing capabilities. The link to the website is in the "Links" section.

Got my check engine light at 2110 miles went out at 2227 miles.
Brought it to dealer. I believe the code was PO1443. They gave me a loaner car. The ECU has been removed and sent back to Subaru via Fed-Ex to be reprogrammed. I was told it would take 3 business days for it to be sent back to the dealer. I was told that this was the second WRX that they have done this for with no further problems after the re-install.
Maybe this is the definitive cure for the CE Light Problem.

that the gas cap was left loose. Of course, this is sheer nonsense; the problem is a design defect in the ECU, as this thread plainly establishes. Either the dealer did not ship the ECU to Subaru because it does not want to do warranty work (possible -- Jim Reed is known for this), or Subaru has failed to inform all dealers of the defect. Either way, Subaru had better fix this problem, or they face legal action.

This time I may ask them to reprogram the ECU.

newscooby 09-13-2001, 03:21 AM I finally become a member of this sad family, this is my first!! I'm so proud:
Let's see:
5 speed Sport wagon, Silver (if it matters)
Mileage on: 3066
Mileage off: currently at 3076 and counting.
I've restarted the car twice.
It's 2 o'clock in the morning, so the dealer is not open. I'll shoot for tomorrow. BTW, the dealer is Subaru of Schaumburg.
BTW, it just might be the vent solnoid problem. I had to muck with the charcoal canister when I installed my trailer hitch. I really hope it's not P0303, misfire in no.3 cylinder. That would suck!!
I'll keep you guys updated.
Another thing:
Car was under moderate load, I was accelerating from a light, going around a gentle curb onto Lake Shore Drive from Sheridan (for those of you in Chicago). I think I was in second gear, doing about 40 mph, shifting to third gear (maybe). I'll keep you guys updated.
Car has no engine mods (yet). Although, I do have the 20 sedan rear bar, Rev-lab Al endlinks, UK 17" wheels, Bridgstone RE011 tires, and the aforemantioned trailer hitch. I don't see how any of these should cause a CEL.

Light on: 10/02/01-3012 miles
Taking to Jack Miller Subaru of Olathe on Thursday 10/4, will report what they tell me.
Car was almost on empty (low fuel light came on several minutes after CEL). Was moderately accelerating away from an intersection.
Have always thought that I was not getting the performance I expected, but didn't have anything to compare to, and thought it was pretty subjective. My gas mileage is something I have wondered about though, I drive VERY moderately, virtually no hard acceleration, maybe once or twice a tank, and I am getting 16 MPG. Maybe this is all related.
10/4/01 Aha! The dreaded 1443! Taking it back in Monday at which time they are going to whisk my ECU back to Subaru for a quick reprogramming. They did say it could be affecting my performance and MPG.
When he came out and told me they were going to send my computer back to Subaru, I said "Oh, code P1443, huh?". He looked very surprised and said, "Uh, yes."
11/13/01 Took the car in the next Monday and got it back on Thursday. Subaru paid for the rental car. A month later haven't had a bit of trouble and the performance is markedly improved. Unfortunately the improved performance has kept my gas mileage from improving because I can't keep my foot out of it.
sajohnson 10-04-2001, 01:02 AM (See earlier post).
As expected, CEL was due to code #1443. The dealership claims that there has been no technical bulletin to date regarding this problem.
I am confused as to why some users have been saying that they were able to get their ECU's replaced or reprogrammed.
By the time I got into the dealership the CEL had reset but they were still able to read the code. No work was done.

Both occured after having used the car for about 10-20km and then turning the car off and then restarting the car withing 10min of shutoff. Both times happened at idle and i did notice the car was idling a bit rough both times. Both times dealer reset ECU.
Last time (10/23/01) they told me it might have something to do with the "aftermarket" alarm system which is tied in somehow in some fashion to cylinder#3's wiring. They siad this could be causing the problem as it an aftermarket alarm (even though i ordered the car with the alarm and they either installed it themselves, or shipped it somehwere to have the alarm installed) They said the will be contacting Subaru to determine an appropriate course of action.

Filled up with Chevron 91 12/3. Light went off after fill up; CEL came back on after about 50 mi of driving (1200 mi), again on the highway. Taking it to the dealer Friday (next open appt).
Always used 91 oct. First fill up @ Shell, second @ Chevron.
UPDATE 12/7: Light was off, ASSAEL pulled code, got P0453, did emission test, found no defect.
UPDATE 12/10: Filled up gas with Shell (service director at ASSAEL said I can put any gas brand I want, as long its 91). Light came back on after about 50 mi. Took car to dlr on Tues. 12/11. Dlr claims there is short somewhere, and they need to keep car. Got Chevy Metro rental (just shoot me now) w NO POWER STEERING! I want them to fix the CEL, but I don't want to drive a POS metro.
UPDATE 12/13: Dlr called and told me something is loose in the ECU, so they ordered a new ECU. I'll get the WRX back till they get the part.
UPDATE: 12/27: New ECU is installed, 12/28 Check engine light is back on. Had dealer check it again!! This time they think it's a Fuel Pressure Sensor. New Part is ordered.
UPDATE: 1/14/02: Fuel Pressure Sensor part has arrived. 1/15: I took the car to the dealer. He quoted me 2-3 hours, but the technician says, "No Way! That sensor is in the fuel tank. We have to drop the rear driveshaft, and the fuel tank to get to it. It'll be at least a day to do it. The dealer didn't want to give me a rental for 2-3 hours, but agreed to get me a rental. Enterprise didn't have any Chevy Metros (thank the lord!) and so I got a Park Avenue. It's a far cry from the WRX, but it's nice. Hopefully this is the end of my CEL woes.
UPDATE: 1/26/02: The car hasn't been driven much because I'm driving my old MX6 to make sure stuff still works. CEL is back on today after putting gas and driving about 60 miles. AARRGH!! binderm 12-28-2001, 10:59 PM CAR: WRX Sedan
VIN# 506295
Peninsula Subaru in Gorst Washington
Occurred between 6500 and 7300 miles so far.
Transmission: Automatic
Five times into the dealership, each time I got the CEL I also had an Automatic Transmission Temp light start blinking.
Four Cures so far:
1st Replace the Mass air flow sensor
2nd Replace the O2 sensor
3rd Replace the ECM and TCM - Transmission Control module
4th Remove the mask from the hood
Since all of the problems occurred in the rain the dealership has decided that the mask is holding water and dumping water into the engine when I accelerate. This is even though the problem occurred at 20 mph with no acceleration the first time and at approximately 30 mph and slowing the last time. I am going to talk to them about getting the ECM reprogrammed. I hope that will be the final cure.
andygold 12-29-2001, 10:20 AM Trans: Manual
Date On: 12/17/01 (17K miles - came on while cruising @ 70 mph(steady throttle), blinked 3 times then extinguished. About 100 miles later, CEL came back on, but steady. CEL extinguished on it's own about 400 miles(4 days) later.
Code: vent controll solenoid...AGAIN
Dealer: Metric Subaru :)
Action the dealer took: SOA Tech re-flashed the Eprom, while at the dealer. Dealer setup date for many WRXs to gather for massive flash session. IMHO, much much better than sending ECM back to SOA. ECM had to be accessed for flashing...not done through OBD II port.
WagonMaster 12-29-2001, 10:47 AM Car: WRX 5spd Wagon
Miles: 6800
Code: P0303
Diag: Misfire in cyl #3.
The dealer reset my ECU and sent me on my way. He said it could be due to water in my gas tank or some dodgy gas. I only ever fill up with premium though...

Tranny: 5 MT
Miles: 3870
Dealership: Carter, Seattle WA
Code: p0303, misfire in cylinder #3
Action: Checked connections and cleared the code. Claimed nothing was unusual upon inspection. Fixed under warranty. I noted that the CEL came on as I was idling on a really rainy evening.
bgsntth 01-02-2002, 12:35 PM Mileage: 6342 on a Manual

Came on also while idleing in a steady downpoar. Dealer ordered a #3 cylinder coil, which is a different fix than I've read on this thread. Will update when part comes in.
CoachTim56 01-05-2002, 08:20 PM I have a 2002 WRX with 7500 miles on it....about a week ago I had an oil change, and the threads in the oil pan were toast, so Auburn Subaru helped me tremendously by changing the pan out in 24 hours...GOOD JOB GUYS!!!
Then the really bad thing happened; I was sitting at a stoplight, when the Check Engine Light came on. As I started accelerating from the stoplight, I noticed a definite lack of power...I drove home, then back to the Subaru dealer in Auburn.....now this was at 4pm on a Friday afternoon, and I had no idea what to expect...apparently the computer dropped #3 cylinder, and the code that came out told the guys in Service to send the ECU back to Subaru for re-programming. This is the first time I've had any problems with this car, and the 7500 were not easy miles.....but lo and behold the Auburn Subaru guys came through....they gave me a 99 Impreza to drive until my car gets fixed.....although it sure doesn't do 0-60 in 5.4 seconds....and it's an automatic...but at least I have a car till mine is fixed.
I was wondering if anyone else has had the same problem....I have heard about resets, but never taking the computer out to reprogram it.
Thanks...and a tip of my hat to the guys in the service department at Auburn Subaru.
sajohnson 01-06-2002, 01:47 AM You said the oil pan threads were toast--please explain. Who changed the oil previously? Why were the drain plug threads stripped?
CoachTim56 01-06-2002, 02:37 AM The first oil change at 3000 was done at a Subaru dealer in Yakima.....the last one at Auburn Subaru...when the mechanic pulled out the drain plug, he noticed rips in the threads....so I asked if I could look at the threads, as I am a journeyman machinist. I looked at the threads on the drain plug, and they were about 30% gone....the pan side showed double-crested threads, which leads me to believe it was either a factory defect, or on the first oil change, the plug wasn't threaded into the pan properly. But I would probably believe it was a defect from the factory...could have been soft steel in the plug material...a number of things could cause thread galling...unless they missed the tolerance between the plug and the pan.
BTW...the dang computer going out is the first electronic problem I've had, and I've put some hard miles on the car already.
fluffybunny 01-10-2002, 01:33 AM coach,
not me but i've heard of numerous people getting their ecu's flashed. do a search and you might come up with something.

vizor 01-11-2002, 01:57 PM * WRX Wagon
* Dealership: Austin Subaru in Austin, TX
* Miles: 11 and again at 120 (brand new car)
* Codes: P0171, P0301, P0302, P0303, P0304
P0171 - engine is running lean
P030x - cylinder misfire (x = cylinder number)
Both CELs had all the above codes; the first time the dealership thought it may just be some minor just-fresh-from-the-factory thing and cleared the codes without further diagnostics.
The second time the dealership wanted to look. A disconnected vacuum line was found and once reconnected, the engine ran better of course, and the CELs stopped occuring. The CEL has not triggered since the fix.
Being a brand new car, this was a frustrating experience but I figured it was something minor. Luckily it was!
Bugsie1 01-14-2002, 12:59 PM Oh dear God.
Almost lost count of the number of P0457 CEL's:
CEL... Reset by dealer
CEL... New Fuel Cap installed by dealer
CEL... Reset by dealer
CEL... Drain Pipe fixed by dealer
CEL... SOA reprogrammed my ECM
and now guess what, less than 200 miles after my new ECM...
CEL.
Do I have any constructive comments or advice for others?? No, I'm just really upset, my WRX is not well and SOA can't fix it.

CODE: P0303 (misfire in #3 cylinder)
The CEL was steady-on, not on-off-on
Dealer: Dellenbach Motors, Fort Collins, CO
Action: Dealer took a look, stuck his thumb in his ass (where his head was) and said nothing was wrong. He said it might be a problem with the gasoline in the winter time around here (additives and stuff). Suggested maybe a fuel injector cleanor or octane booster. Yeah right. Not gonna pay extra on top of the price of supreme gas. If something is wrong with the engine, they better fix it next time.
I'll check the spark plug wires like I've seen in other posts, and maybe get some sealant against moisture for them (although it's pretty dry here).

Reset by Wentworth- Portland OR
CEL came on at a steady 60mph. There was a pulse (loss of power) when the light came on. There was a loss of power in the high-boost range, 3000-6000 rpm, which went away after several days (without reseting). CEL light went off the day after it came on.
Wentworth said it only needed to be reset not reflashed.

I pull these quite often it seems. It is most often in hard acceleration during cornering with less than 1/2 a tank of gas. They usually reset/go off when I fill up.
This one occurred with a full tank. The service advisor told me I needed to slow down. He said it was a cam shaft position sensor going off at 6200 rpm. I said, "but the redline is 7200 rpm" He responded that I was only going 25mph. That was a bit confusing to be honest. I think 25mph is about right for that rpm in 1st gear.
We'll see how this goes.

Bugsie1 01-25-2002, 06:01 PM P0457 - Lots of them. (already logged)
Current Dealer explanation is a "blocked Fuel Ventilation system " (rear of the car?) from going off road (it was "full of dirt".)
More info as I find out.

Here's my dilemma... I just bought an AEM intake, and want to install it, but I don't want the dealer blaming my new intake for my next CEL. Do any of you guys with these CEL problems already have mods on your cars that the dealers are giving you a hard time for?
