Several weeks ago someone set up a SVX mail-list thingy on eGroups. When this forum was created someone (don't recall who) asked why we did not just switch to eGroups, which had threading, a search function, etc. etc.
My reasons for not wanting to switch to eGroups are:
eGroups is a commercial enterprise with CMGI being the primary VC. (http://www.cmgi.com/companies/egroups.html)
Thier mission is to deliver "email advertising solutions". Sounds like spam to me. They filter out spam from others, but that does not mean they won't spam you. They have to make money somehow and if they don't charge for services they MUST charge for targeted advertising. (or have unhappy investors)
eGroups may disappear if they are not able to find investors during thier next round of funding. eGroups must grow, or die.
The owners of Impreza-RS.com probably hope to make some money off of it sometime in the future, but there is no pressure to IPO, no staff to pay, no concerns about business plans, no investors to keep happy. In the months before the SVX forum was created, the users of this board made donations that allowed the purchase of a server to host the web site.
I'm pretty certain that impreza-rs.com is operated with the concern of the users first.
eGroups.com had better put the investors concerns first, unless they don't plan to IPO and don't need any additional VC funding, which I doubt they will get from CMGI anyway.
And that, in several nutshells, is why I did not switch to the eGroups SVX list.
Besides, the Impreza-RS baord uses such a pleasant shade of yellow.
