I LOVE these cars....

Why is everybody [including the press] obsessed with the sedan?

The station wagon is the world's most perfect car!

Are there ever going to be any articles on the wagon?

p.s. you can check out my current wagon Here (http://www.williwood.com/motor.html)

It is all in your/their/my heads. I am currently driving a red OBS wagon, like the one in your link, though the WRX I ordered is a silver sedan. For some reason, the words "station wagon" just do not invoke a sporty image in my mind. SoA reinforces the perception by not offering the same bulges on the wagon, thus making it appear the more sedate of the two, even if it is not (by much anyway).

Speaking just to the difference in form, I do agree that a wagon is more practical in terms of versatility and carrying capacity than a sedan, but those reasons are not why I am buying a WRX.

CONCUR! Nice pic of MY02. Your 98 looks nice as well. My thoughts on a wagon: complete transportation beyond practical or theoretical improvement.

I like sedate. I like the stealth of it. Like when you have to merge and you suddenly surge past an unsuspecting "hot" car. I just think it's cool to have a practical, somewhat dopey looking (yet actually pretty pleasing to the eye) car, that can kick the butt of most cars on the road. (Don't worry, I'm not planning on drag racing at stoplights with Vipers - or any other car for that matter).

I of course also think that the benefits of having the wagon outweigh the loss of performance and aesthetics.

its all about what you want...i personally love the looks of the new and old WRX wagons, and the thought of a sleeper wagon is very cool, but i wouldnt *own* one... at least not when the sedan is less expensive (here in PR the wagon ended up being more expensive http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/frown.gif http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/confused.gif )

i wouldve definately considered it if the WRX wagon wouldve retained its "cheaper than sedan" state

I hope to see all you guys autoxing your wagons that would be damn cool. As for me I don't need the practicality of a wagon so I'm getting a sedan. I mean I've lived with a 2dr RS and have had no problems with room so this should be even better.

I was talking a friesnd of mine into a wagon and it looked like he was in to it.
When I checked on the weight difference and found that the wagon did not share the same track as the wagon, 1" narower than the sedan and 85lbs heavier, he changed his mind.
the weight is not that much a deal I think the narower track is. I was thinking wagon myself but I don't want to spend more money on the car just to get it back to where it should have been from the factory. Maybe later. He is now thinking Yellow WRX sedan, he has a lead on one where a person cancelled their order.I said man just go for it might as well get one of a very few out there.

The wagon is just too cool. It will be much more rare, as well. Does anyone remember the Audi S6 Avant? YOWZERS! The new S4 Avant is dropdeadgorgeous, but also dropdeadexpensive.

Following a test drive, I anticipate ordering a WhiteWRXWagon. MMmmmm . . . Wagon . . .

Wagons rule. If I get a WRX it will be a white or silver wagon. My dealer says he has one of each coming in the next two weeks that aren't accounted for. T-WRX I got to sit in a new $4 Avant at the Auto Show. Damn fine! Bright yellow tasteful chrome trim. $42K http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/frown.gif

Why is everyone always saying track is SOOO important, the difference is miniscule. There's many other variables that will affect a car's performance.

Here's the specs:

Track (front/rear): 58.5 (57.7 Wagon) / 58.3 (57.3 Wagon)

To look at it another way:
The Wagon's track is 1.36% smaller than the Sedan at the front and 1.72% smaller at the rear.

Also, the 22B has a wider track than the old Impreza model yet it's been said it doesn't handle as well.

I agree, wagons are very practical and also feel that the wrx wagon has unique look.
the sedan is very civc/corolla-ish with the exception the hood scoop.

I've always preferred wagons. More useful, low key, cheaper insurance and will surprise (and embarrass) those unsuspecting Mustangs at the stop lights. I was going to buy an S4 Avant but too much money so instead here I am. My silver wagon will be here next month. It seems like everyone I spoke to who got a wagon got a silver one for some reason.

Besides the track and the weight, are Impreza wagons equal in performance with sedans? My parents had a legacy GT and legacy outback wagon at the same time, both the previous series legacy. The wagon was too tail heavy, always sticking its rump out on turns. The sedan had the most perfect balance I've ever seen in a car.

I have another reason for getting a sedan over a wagon. Even though the wagon has more room, the thought of trying to keep the fur from my seemingly always shedding white german shepard out of the dark interior clock/carpeting is more than I want to contemplate. So, I am getting a sedan, leather and keeping the back closed off from any floating fur.

Blue wagon for me as well. That shot with the 17's is nice, but IMHO, confirms that the car should be lowered, just a tad( Prodrive style)... and that the side skirts should most definately be painted to match the car...and that it definately needs the waist spoiler( again, all IMHO http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/smile.gif )

FWIW, in the new STi Hyper Rev, they have a partial shot of a pre-production wagon with the fender blisters. Looks pretty neat, but I also like the fact that the wagon looks a bit different then the sedan( aside from the wagon part of course http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/wink.gif )

Hey the main reason I'm even GETTING a WRX is because I need a wagon in a bad way. If SOA had sold a 2.5RS wagon back in '98, I'd still be driving that instead of my coupe, and I probably wouldn't even be looking for a new car...

Yes yes, the wagon is most definately it. That one I took pics of at the auto show was beautiful. I personally think that the lines are much cleaner on the wagon, has a very avant look to it, and the smoother lines actually work better with the headlights than the sedan.

Sorry, but the blistered fenders on the sedan just look kinda goofy, especially with the tiny ass stock 16"s. Then there is that wagon body kit, and the fact that it's huge inside, and the performance diff is negligable.

White wagon for me! But this silver one was nice too, which is why I'm standing next to it!

What are you guys talking about ?! The wagon is an average looking vehicle at best. I see a AMC Pacer wagon. The back 1/2 looks OK (and maybe "avant-ish") but the front could have been designed 20 years ago ! Come on Subaru ! What happened to the design team that gave us the SVX. A WRX wagon with a longer and sleeker front would look awesome IMHO !

RidinLow
03-02-2001, 09:59 AM
I like my Imprezas short & stubby. If they went for a long sleek nose, the car would end up like a Firebird, with a 5 ft front overhang! Looks great, but not so good for rallying or your local driveway http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/smile.gif.

But seriously, yes, the front end is far from pretty, but I don't think it's because of length & sleekness. BMW's manage to pull off a great look without the lengthy look.

JaiMak
03-02-2001, 10:06 AM
In terms of looks, yes the wagon isn't going to win any design awards, but I do think it is much more attractive (and versatile) than the sedan, which I found somewhat tiny inside.

I guess I just dig the wagon because I've been living with my coupe for a while now, and while it wasn't a problem before, I'm slowly finding the need to be able to cart more stuff around.

Old design Impreza Wagon (OBS for example) has a very good looking front end but ugly back end. Now they resigned and get a ugly looking front end and good looking back end. Subaru must have a very tight design budget so they can only put money on one end not the whole bodyhttp://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/smile.gif

The wagons better weight distribution won't help its handling. The only reason it has better weight distribution is because they added weight to the back end. Thats a bad thing. To make it worse, most of that added weight is high off the ground near the roof. Plus there's the wagons shorter track and softer chassis. Granted, the real world differences between the two are probably very small and most people won't even notice. When driven to the limit the sedan may pull an extra few tenths of a G or so, but I doubt anything significant. You just can't say the wagon would handle better though. That's like saying the sedan would handle better with 85 lbs tied to it's trunk lid.

BerkshireFarms
03-09-2001, 04:34 PM
I've been thinking about the "softer chassis" on the wagon idea. I couldn't figure why the wagon would be more prone to flex than the sedan. Is it because of the lack of structure between the rear shock towers? I was also wondering if the roof rack would add any rigidity?

TIA

Eby
03-09-2001, 04:38 PM
Yea, I think its mostly because the big open area that the wagon has. Where the sedan has support from the base of the back window. You could probably make up most of the difference with a rear strut bar, but you'd loose some of you're cargo area.

Jimbo,
If you are only concerned about rain and dry, the nitto 555 extreme is a much higher performance tire than the 450, and you still get good mileage from them. They are somewhat noisier perhaps. I had the 555 on my integra. I got 40k miles including three track days, and was very impressed on their resistance to hydroplaning. Traction, turn in improved, and the ride is decent for a performance tire. The Sumitomo HTRZ II's I have now ride a bit better, are quieter, but turn in is vague, confidense level is lower, and hydroplaning is worse inspite of the way it looks.
Great idea to put new rubber on right away!

Just confirmed my love of wagons last night. Needed to utilize the back of the Jeep Cherokee to take a piece of furniture home from the store. Very glad to not be giving up all of that space to a sedan (especially one that doesn't look much better than the wagon). It may not have quite as much space as the Jeep, but for an all around utility/fun/kick-ass car, I don't think you can beat it...and I haven't even seen one in person! I can't wait till next weekend! I should probably go study for Oral Pathology...fun.
