Straight from July'03 Edition of Motor Trend

Subaru's sleek four-door pickup gets a power boost with 2.5l/210horespower, turbocharged and intercooled four based on the new WRS STi Engine. Avaliable with a five-speed manual or a 4 speed automatic, this AWDdriver is 4 seater that goes off-road with 8.4 inches ground clearance. The combination of relatively large displacement and turo-charging should result in impressive lo-wend torque and worth top-end power...

Well here it is..

Nice that they are talking about it, now when does it get here? Now that the Snuglid is available, I really want to take a test drive.

Hey, I just played hookie and went to a dealership - a guy just came back from Arizona Sub dealer get together thingie - and he told me he confirmed there is no manual 5 speed on Baja turbo. What the ???? Is that true? Said he talked to number of SOA folks and got the same answer. Did anyone who went to NY Autoshow look at the transmission? Does it only come with a pathetic 4-matic transmission? Please tell me he is wrong... Also it'll be in Colorado in Sep. By that time, I may have XT in my driveway. Daddy already told his daughters he was gettign a beach car for them. Now I'll be a lier! Subaru of America amazingly find ways to intercourse in bad manner with subbie enthusiasts who actually believe in them. I'm almost urinating off. BTW, XT will be in CO next week.

The Baja Turbo at the NY Autoshow had a 5 spd trans. The mini brochure lists the 5 spd as standard. 4 spd Auto w/ sportshift & VTD optional.

The dealer may be confusing the Baja Turbo with the Forester XT. The Forester XT w/ Premium pkg (auto, leather, moonroof) is auto trans. only.

Thanks, DaveM - you saved me. Let's hope the dealer guy was smoking crack and SOA didn't lie at the NY Auto Show. Daddy promissed his girls for a beach car and doesn't have a heart to distroy their dreams (or was it mine?). Thanks DaveM again!

OK, got an email clarification - the dealer guy was apparently day-dreaming at the conference - can you balme him after getting into XT? I can't...

Baja Turbo will initially be available with an automatic transmission,
however, a 5MT will be added shortly after introduction. Forester XT only
has one premium package, which must be ordered with an automatic
transmission. Sorry for any confusion.

Thanks,

rm

If you follow rob's link above, then click on "Baja" on the left, then "Turbo at a glance" and "Turbo Specs", you'll find all the cool info.

For example the engine has sodium filled exhaust valves. Why, I have no idea but it's really cool to say.

More interesting to me is the fact that it's a VTD automatic transmission. I assume that means 65% rear and 35% front torque distribution.

Also tow rating is 2400 pounds.

Nothing about when it's shipping though.

Will this the same 5mt used in the WRX or is it different somehow?
