View Full Version : ECU crush mod
Gary Thomas 07-17-2000, 09:00 AM I posted a question on the yahoo site and only got one response, so I would like to try it here.
When I attempted to do the ECU noise suppressor crush mod, I found my ECU apparently has no noise suppressor to crush and no wire showing it has been done. Everyshadeofblue responded that he heard that early models like his and mine do not have it. His is 5/91 and mine is 6/91.
For those who have done this mod, what is the earliest production date you have? We know that this mod is only for 92s and 93s, but maybe we could narrow this down a little.
Also, Phil North sent me some great directions on removing the ECU if anyone is interested. What we could use though, is a photo of the ECU complete with noise suppressor to be crushed.
jason_watkins 07-17-2000, 09:06 AM yeah, I agree, it would be great to get a photo of that...
I'll look at pulling mine and snapping it with the digi-cam

pardon my SVX ignorance .. what dose this do? make the car louder??
CRZ_MSL 07-18-2000, 10:52 AM Early SVX had a problem with hesitation in accelerating. This mod fixes that.
Gary Thomas 07-18-2000, 09:42 PM Thanks for the drawing RSVX, and for the concern of others.
This crush mod is a very important thing for owners of 92 and 93 SVXs. I think it would be a giant step for members of this club or others to have an actual photograph of the ECU with its black noise suppressor before the crush is done. That may be difficult to come by.
arejay 07-19-2000, 11:07 PM I plan on doing the "Crush" mod when I pull the lower part of the dash to replace switch lamps. Perhaps I can snap a photo of mine before and after. Don't know when I'll get 'round to it though.
richeich 07-19-2000, 11:53 PM Next weekend when Ray comes to town he said maybe I could help him do his ECU. (I don't know why, I've never done it!). I was thinking the same thing, though. If we do it, I'll take pictures and post them like the PCV valve replacement.

nubbsjr 07-21-2000, 12:02 PM Hey everybody,I finally had time to do the ECU mod to my car. It is a 92 with a build date of 12/91. It is not really difficult if you take your time and have the right tools. It is harder to get back in than take out because of the limited space under the dash.I took some pictures of before and after with a regular camera, don't know when I will get them on here or if they will turn out decent. It definetly makes a difference in acceleration when starting from a dead stop. I also removed the air box inside the fender well, and installed a Amsoil filter, also an improvement over stock.
Any question about this procedure let me know.

richeich 07-28-2000, 08:49 PM Hey again. Ray came by today and we had a nice visit. (BTW-that's Ray Allen from Kansas City. 'Halistan' on Yahoo). We got his tranny flushed with Amsoil Synthetic ATF, and replaced the fluid in both differentials with Amsoil Series 2000 75W-90 gear lube.
We also performed the ECU mod. (Thanks for the instructions Gary, and the link to the drawing RSVX!). Everything went well, and it wasn't too hard to do, once we figured out it was easier to install/uninstall with the panels under the steering column removed.
Like I said earlier about taking pictures, we got the camera out and took photos of the whole thing. Location, ECU board before and after crush mod, and everything. So the camera shows 20 pics taken. I figure about 4 to go. So I try to finish the roll so I can get it developed and posted, because I had already taken pictures of my Legacy on that roll and I was ready to see them. Well, it goes past 24, then on up to 36.......and past. What the....? I try to release and rewind the film so I can take it out. Guess what? There's nothing there! That's right, no film! http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/eek.gif
First of all, I've never done that in my whole life. Why start now? I mean, I didn't just do it today. I've thought for the last month or so that I had taken pictures of my new Legacy. I was just waiting for an excuse to finish off the roll and get it developed. What a MORON! http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/mad.gif I can still take pictures of my car, but I've missed the chance to have pictures of the ECU mod for everyone.
Second of all, why in the heck was the counter advancing when there was no film in the camera? It's an old Canon T-50, and I would have thought that without film, the counter should not advance. http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/confused.gif I don't know, but I think maybe the Aliens came and took my film without me knowing.
Sorry about this Ray. I know you wanted copies. At least I screwed up on the picture taking, and not on the actual work on the car. Right?........Ray?.... http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/frown.gif
Oh well, the car runs good! And I had a good time visiting with Ray and his girlfriend Marissa (sp?).
Pretty much disgusted with myself....

arejay 08-01-2000, 01:47 AM Rich, don't feel bad. I got my pics back from Reading only to find that I had used a roll of film that had already been used. My beautiful pics of 23 SVXes in a row were ghosted behind pics of the Grandkids' birthdays -- grrrr. Of course, the first shots were more prominent so my car pics were taken in vain. (yeah, finally got back in here with my ORIGINAL password -- this site doesn't want me here.)
Gary Thomas 08-03-2000, 08:27 PM Well it's up to nubbsjr to post an actual photo of the noise suppressor to be crushed. I am interested to see what it looks like in comparison to my unit. Also, there will be future members wishing to see a photo. Thanks for trying Rich. Great intentions.
