Yes I've done a search, but I'd like some clarification from those of you that have installed these in a WRX......

A) Does the WRX have a factory relay and is it capable of handling these horns?

B) If I can use a factory relay, what additional wiring is needed to get these things cranking?

C) Does the WRX us a positive or negative ground for these?

As you can tell, I haven't ripped into this project yet, I'd rather have these questions cleared up beforehand so that everything goes as smooth as possible.

Thanks,

Eric

OK...Iv explained this before....

Pretty much the WRX has 2 horns..one in the front bumper, the other is off to the side behind the bumper. You can just plug the connectors from the stock horn into the hella's....connect a ground, and they will work fine. If you want them to be most effective, put them behind the grill, and use the SIDE horn connector to "switch" a relay...then do your own wiring to mount the horns on the radiator support behind the grill. It also allows you to keep one stock horn for a broader sound.

I did what DDMan did...Works great. LOUD :)
The Supertone's WILL get the attention of soccer momz with a phone glued to their ear.

I may be a little slow on the uptake, but this whole process of using the Hella relay off the driver's side horn lead still isn't clear to me. Guess I'll just dive into it and hope for the best.;)

3 questions...

1) Where did you get these horns? and:
2) How much? and:
3) What kind of tone do they have (beep, or honk)?

Thanks;)

Here's what I did:

Left the driver's side horn alone. Took the lead from the center horn and fed it into the relay for the switch.
Grounded the relay, ran the two horns into the relay by running them into a single connector.

Ran a lead from the battery to the relay for power and finally ran the grounds from the two horns back to the battery grounding point on the driver's side fender.

Dielectric grease on all the contacts and zip-tied the new "wiring harness". I left the relay unmounted behind the bumper, but I will probably pick up some double-sided sticky tape to adhere it better.

Only hangup was having to run to the hardware store to pick up a bolt to mount the passenger's side horn on to the center piece- I believe it's a smaller 7mm bolt that's pre-tapped for some reason.

To answer the previous post, I picked mine up at Rallylights.com for $69 shipped. As for the sound, it's hard to explain other than to say it's piercing.:D

Thats pretty much exactly what I was explaining to do, except using the side horn

Only reason I used the side horn was because it was out of the way, and wouldnt get hit by water or anythign when it rains (or wouldnt get hit with alot). It also keeps the one stock horn right in line with the 2 hella's so the triple blast should get anyone's attention.

I too got mine from RallyLights.com for the same price.

hey I installed my about a week ago and they are great!

I used the factory wires to plug and grounded them, I didn't use the relay it came with.

My question is, I want to use the relay because they will probably be louder than using the factory relay.

does anybody know where the stock relay is and if I can just "swap" it out for the Hella relay?

thanks

btw, I did a search and got nada.

Too much reading for me, so I'll list my install....

I used the relay from Hella, just used the drivers side horn for the single wire, added an inline fuse and hooked them up directly to the accesory port on my positive terminal (aftermarket battery terminals) Grounded them and honked in my garage... I'll never do that again. ;)

Also, I put my directly behind my grill and painted them flat black to blend in. To heavy a coat of paint will limit their effectiveness, just gotta lightly spray them. I hated seeing the bright red rings in my front grill.

arubus: We are using the hella horn as our relay, we just use the stock wiring to "activate" the relay. We use VERY little amperage from the stock equipment, and the Hella relay has all the power running through it. With the hella relay, we can wire the horns directly to the battery.

Daven: Again, same idea for the install as all of us. As for the painting, did you realize part of the grill comes off the horns? You might still have some red lettering, but removing the grill proby woulda been better on the horns.

DDMan: I got what you are saying, and I know that I could just wire the relay that Hella gave me to the stock wiring, but I was just curious if the factory relay was easily accessible so I could install the Hella relay in that location.

maybe I should just go pound sand and quit being lazy and just wire the relay and mount it somewhere.

...not positive, but check in the fuse box for the OEM relay.

I was thinking of taking the horn grills off and painting them black as well, but removing the 12 or so screws and nuts per horn didn't look like a fun way to spend the afternoon.

Besides, the look of having two red misaligned discs behind the grill has kinda grown on me.

it actually didn't take that long to do...it took longer to paint the things than take off the nuts/screws and put them back.
The only thing is that its starting to chip so it's now a 15 foot paint job. oh well, the stealth factor is cool though.

turner: thanks, I'll check that out.
