View Full Version : WRX Brakes. Should this be happening?
christoph1371 04-30-2001, 11:32 AM My front brakes, when applied heavy, give a faint wobble. I am unsure if its my tires under infated or what. as I get out i notice rings (grove patterns) on both front rotors. There are several rings and the left and right rotors are not the same. There is a slight indentation as I slide my finger nail across the rotor too.
RidinLow 04-30-2001, 11:42 AM For some reason, the scored rotors are "normal." Everybody's got them (try searching). As for the wobbling, that doesn't sound good! Have you tried asking your dealer? Are you braking heavily on uneven pavement?
Ed_RS 04-30-2001, 11:58 AM I have the wierd rings on my fronts as well, they seemed to have smoothed out though.
My tail kind of slides out when i break hard, does this happen to you?

Porter 04-30-2001, 01:56 PM I'll second the squirmy braking thing. During my test drive I had to stop unexpectedly on two occasions and I felt like the car was totally unsettled. It was absolutely terrible. It felt like the car had frame damage or something, it really wanted to swap ends. Anybody else notice this? I was dismayed.

procrustes 04-30-2001, 03:52 PM The grooves on the front rotors are due to the fact that they are full of dings - Subaru seems to have neglected to machine or turn the rotors smooth before delivering the cars. There are little chunks of metal sticking out all over - these chunks then groove out the brake pads & result in the ridged rotors. I suspect the braking could be improved by properly preparing the rotor. I wonder if the squirmy rear is due to this problem. (the rear brakes are machined ok & could be throwing your brake bias to the rear?)

rkkwan 04-30-2001, 05:54 PM I have 18" wheels with 215/40 Paradas running 35lb all around and this is what happened last Sunday:
I took a freeway exit way too hot. It's a pretty sharp 90 degree exit (not 270 degree cloverleaf), and I braked hard from about 75mph into the turn. The tires screamed and the car seem unsettled, but instead of plowing ahead, the rear came around nicely, and even though I thought I was going to hit the curb, I was pretty clear from it.
The whole thing happened very fast, and I am still trying to figure out what really happened. I drove my Supra hard for 6 years, and I never made a mistake like this. But with the WRX, it's the second time (5 weeks, 2900 miles). Maybe it's pedal feel, maybe I'm over-confident in the WRX, or maybe there's something strange with the brakes. But I don't have an answer yet.

that sounds to me like all of the weight came off the rear of the car while you were turning and came around. That happened to me at Portland International Raceway. Went too fast into a turn, hit the brakes and the rear end came around. Next thing I know I am in the dirt. (with the rubber side downhttp://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/smile.gif)
I would say slow down through the corners.
"slow in, fast out"
blkwag 04-30-2001, 09:16 PM This is an AWD system. Learn to throttle steer that baby.
SWITCH 04-30-2001, 09:59 PM I get the same feeling as the rest of you. I haven't figured out all of the suprises left in the WRX yet, but there's definately something funny going on with the brakes. I don't mind rear bias but I'd just like to know if it's suppose to be built-in?
Oh well, it still beats my 98 Blazer no matter how screwy the brakes arehttp://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/smile.gif
rkkwan 04-30-2001, 10:04 PM Yes, Akiata. Thanks for the reminder. It was a mistake of mine with that speed on an exit that I'm not familiar with, and on a car that's still rather new to me. I think the WRX has more of a front weight bias and pitched more in heavy braking than what I am used to. Shouldn't make that mistake again.
christoph1371 05-01-2001, 12:02 AM yeah a tad. Overall I am not too imprezed with the braking on the wrx. Something is not right with the cars braking. Perhaps thats cause i am used to my rs with the fhi setup.
Yes , i know uneven pavement makes the car brake funny. But i am refering to even pavement.
Samirr76 05-01-2001, 12:03 AM Mine slides out too if im in a turn....its the RE92's....try increasing you inflation pressures a few lbs. make the rear tires closer in pressure to the fronts...
derrick7d 05-01-2001, 12:44 AM That's pretty scary and unsafe. Take it to the dealer and let us know what happens
