I'm thinking of getting this Bulldog alarm/keyless entry for my new impreza: Bulldog 5002 (http://www.jcwhitney.com/productnoitem.jhtml?CATID=81726&BQ=jcw2)
-OR- I guess it's possible to put the legacy security kit into the impreza and all you need to do is rewire the ignition cutoff?
Which would you reccomend?

*shrug*
i use the OEM factory alarm...
and i keep my RS garaged... <--- i suppose that helps...
I think any aftermarket alarm is going to do the trick...
Just make sure it's installed properly...
price shop... comparison shop....
good luck

I'd say....maybe a Clifford or something top shelf if you're serious about it. I have the factory alarm, but it didn't help when some scum smashed my windows. Oddly enough it never went off. That irritated me, but I do like the ignition immobiliser feature.

I got the stock one here too. Gonna stick with it until something bad happens. Although it is not to sensitive. My brother has a clifford (not sure which model) and it is awesome, that would be the route i would go if I went aftermarket.

i use the upgraded stock alarm and see no reason to upgrade from it. if i kick my rims (lightly, mind you) my car detects it and chirps. i tried to break into my car for fun once with a metal ruler (to flip the power lock button) but of course that set off the alarm because any attempt to unlock the car with the keyless system will set it off, even using the key in the door. also whenever the car is left alone for more than 30 seconds with closed doors it disengages the starter. sounds good enough for me!

Kyguy:
If your Impreza has keyless entry, you can use 1997-1998 Legacy security upgrade kit. Only a bit of cut and slice, and you can't beat the cost ($31 at 1stSubaruparts.com)

It does not, and I tried getting the keyless entry stuff @ subaruparts and they said they couldn't get it.
So, it seems easier to get an add-on kit rather than getting the legacy + keyless getup in my opinion :/
edit: sorry it was subaruparts, not 1stsubaruparts!

oh, that sucks...
From which year Impreza got pre-wired for Keyless entry? I thought it was from 1997... but I'm not sure... anyway, Subaruparts.com (not 1st Subaruparts.com) sells Keyless entry kit as well as security upgrade for Legacy around that year (well, "our" year... 1997-1998.
Legacy and Impreza all used the same Keyless/alarm unit and wiring looks pretty identical (Before they started using Alpine unit. These day's model, I'm not sure about the compatibility...). So I believe you can use Legacy unit. Though, you might wanna make sure whether your car is pre-wired for keyless/alarm, otherwise the task could be a bit icky one... Furthermore, the keyless unit for Legacy at Subaruparts.com cost $170. Installing a universal one at some shop might be cheaper... (and remote on old Subaru kit doesn't look as good as others...)
I'm not being much of help, am I...? Sorry... :p

I just found out pre-wiring was from 1999... Okay, I admit. I'm no help...

Well, looks like I'm going to be installing that bulldog one then, it seems like the most straightforward and cheap ($59) solution now! and it comes with keyless entry.
I can see that this project is getting bigger and bigger for me to do by myself, but as a former electrical engineer I should be able to handle it ;)
