View Full Version : Intake for 99 2.2L
C17LOAD 07-15-2003, 12:33 AM I have a couple questions that I have not been able to find the answer to, so I'll just ask them here. Please don't flame for I am new to the 2.2.
I have a 99 L Sedan with the 2.2 and I am trying to find an intake. I notice when shopping that most/all of the ads specify the 2.5L motor. Is there a difference between the 2.2 and the 2.5 and if so where do I find an intake for my car? Is the best route a DIY type mod with the filter where on top of the manifold ala WRX intercooler? If so what do I need to accomplish that (besides obviously the right hood)? Thanks for any help you can give.
imprezaboi 07-15-2003, 03:51 AM First off, welcome to the club fellow 2.2L GC8 driver. 2ndly, all intakes made for the impreza 93-01 will work.
For home made intake, it isn't hard to make one but for a low costing one with good results (a nice growl) go with a PDM intake with a drop in K&N filter. You can get the PDM intake from http://www.pdm-racing.com/products/subaru_corner.html
Hope that helps
kami333 07-15-2003, 04:42 AM He needs his MAF sensor in there somewhere though;)
It's our curse, gotta get a MAF adapter and then hack up a nice intake.
AWDPilot 07-15-2003, 11:19 AM OK big word here DEPENDS
Half way through the MY99 they switched from the MAF to a MAP, so it will all depend on which you have set up.
Mine is a later 99 with the MAP sensor, but I haven't been able to get a straight answer on this either way

kermit 07-15-2003, 01:19 PM On the 1999 MY, if the car has California emissions then it has a MAP. If the car has federal emissions then it has a MAF. I hope that this helps.
AWDPilot 07-15-2003, 01:35 PM Thats weird, I didn't think my car came from CA ... since I am in MA thats a long way to travel, but with the colleges near by who knows.
I was told that the intake on my car is much like the RS's and that it was a switch half way through 99 on the L models ... anyone else clear this up?

Interesting, knew that there were both (majority I've seen were MAF) but didn't know that only the CA emissions were MAPs. Well, I don't go to CA that often so that would explain it;)
C17LOAD 07-16-2003, 07:56 PM Heres a picture of mine. I removed the snorkel (just for the growl, then was surprised by a little boost in torque it seemed) and I had no problems driving it. The PDM kit looks like it'll work perfectly for me, if anyone sees differently let me know please. Thanks guys.

P Charles 07-16-2003, 09:59 PM Well now I am curious as well.
My '98 is CAL spec as well. I know the cam timing is different, as well as the ECU, but didn't think to look at air flow/pressure sensors.
Don't know that much about them on cars, but mine has a box with some wires going across it inside. Flow meter?
kermit 07-17-2003, 12:47 PM All 1998 MY uses a MAF. 1999 Impreza and Forester's is when the change occured between MAF and MAP. 2000-present use the MAP. I hope that this helps.

PDM's intake wont work on 98-99 impreza, since we hv MAF. As the other guys said, we need more customizing on out intake system
you can go for injen intake with stock air box remove, or Ganz short ram with stock box stays on

There's a lot of misinformation in this thread. MY99 EJ25's are ALL MAF based. MY00+ received the MAP sensor, compression bump and 5V (wideband) front O2 sensor. The Cal-Spec MY99s had 2 air filters, not a MAP sensor. Remember not to confuse build dates with model year, MY00s began production in 99 but they are not MY99s.
Back on topic, C17Load (I'm guessing a GlobmasterIII loadmaster) I believe you want an intake for MY98 and previous... the MAF, EGR and breather lines were different in the pre-99 2.5's and IIRC all the 2.2s. You can make any EJ25 intake work with a MAF adapter and if you get creative with the PCV and breather lines :). Pre-turbo I had tried several and was most consistently impressed with the Weapon-R V2... the reputation sucks around here but I've had no problems and made great power with it.
C17LOAD 07-26-2003, 08:06 PM Actually, Im now working on the C-5 Galaxy, but yes, Loadmaster.
I was looking for an intake for a 1999 2.2. After all the guessing, I decided I would just remove all the snorkelling and piping that comes from the stock airbox and so far Ive had no problems. So, my decision is to go for the PDM pipe and a K&N filter.
God, you're not stuck at Altus are you?
The PDM should work fine for you if you've got the late 99 MAP based 2.2... if not you WILL destroy the MAF sensor with that setup.
k2blt 07-31-2003, 07:39 PM so for a 98 L, what exactly do i need to look for in an intake and what modifications will be needed if any? has anyone here added an intake that they'd recomend or any that you've have had problems with? any info would be extreemly helpful because this thread is making me really confused. thanks!
k2blt 08-01-2003, 03:47 PM anyone?
Albert 08-01-2003, 07:00 PM You can use ANY intake that will work on a '98RS.
Examples are,
- direct '98 bolt on [ie Weapon-R, Injen]
- modifying a MAP intake: [ie PDM, Ganzflow, Cobb]
- custom [ie buy a j-tube, maf adapter, hose nipples, hose clamps and silicone sleeves]
- only get a maf adapter and mount a cone filter to oe intake tube
- only replace oe filter with a K&N type hi-flow panel filter.
