Im planning to get one this week as I lucked out on my allowance...hehehe, my wife got a bonus at work and sharing some dinero with me. very super cool.

so next item on the to-buy list is an intake temperature guage.
this one will also be autometer. anyone use this meter?
how is it? how accurate is it? i use a nitrous intake spray kit
along with utec so i can really use temperature fluctuation info
as setting up my utec parameters to in open loop.

i dont plan on using closed loop for now as i dont have a
egt guage and do on want to install one just yet.

for those who use it, where did you install the probe?

before airbox? after airbox before sensor? after sensor?

IAT sensors are great for measuring intercooler efficiency. I would put it between the IC and the throttle body and see how close the IC is getting the intake charge back to ambient temps.

in that case i should get a 2 channel meter one that goes

Well in theory the air in the intake before the turbo should remain at outside air temp so reading it before the turbo isn't that helpful. Ultimately you want the temp between the turbo and the IC and again after the IC. Then you can see how much the turbo raises the intake air above outside air temp and then the probe after the IC will tell you how much heat the IC is pulling back out. 100% efficency for the IC would be the temp after the IC would be outside air temp again. Plus knowing how much your turbo is increasing intake temp will help you gauge how efficent it's running if you've increased boost. I haven't done any additional intake temp sensors so am not sure how to plumb thm in effectively.

puckaveli- thanks for the info....yah, the ultimate reason why i need to get a ambient intak temp meter is because i am running openloop on the utec (i can't program closed loop yet as i dont have enough experience and do not have a egt) and i have several parameters programmed for different temperatures.

after the closed loop programming is finished (maybe next year) i would actually change the probe location to after the IC before the throttle body. i also use a nitrous intercooler spray kit so it would be a useful meter to monitor the intake charge temps.

so for my current purpose, would it be best to place the probe
before the box, after the box, or after the MAF?

i would assume in the box below the K&N drop in filter...

Doesn't the utec measure the intake charge temp at the MAF unit? Can you drive the spare solenoid using this as a parameter?

I'm currently looking at a similar idea, trying to monitor multiple temps and such. I've found data displays that cycle through ~8 sensor inputs, thermocouple or rtd type sensors. $180ish for a display, $10-20 per sensor. You could do ambient outside, ambient engine bay, several intake temps, cabin temp, etc. An example of this display is Doric 500. (http://www.omnicontrols.com/lists/doric500_series.htm)

I'm curious to know about the utec and intake temp... anyone know for sure?

tekan- yes, the utec does monitor intake temp in the DISPLAY menu, but the frikken display is too small for anyone driving to
monitor.

this is why i wanted (actually i got it a few minutes ago) the
autometer one. part number 3372 (?). it was about 200bucks.

what im going to do is after i setup closed loop on the utec,
move the probe (thermal couple) to the piping between the
ic and throttle body...but for now im going to place it probably
either in side the airbox or the piping right after the filter.

I had thrown in the low vis comment before the post got lost... I definitely don't like looking completely sideways at my laptop. I'm thinking of looking into a used pentop/slatetop on a mount in the stock clock type area. Might help with that.

tekan- exactly! its dangerous trying to watch the parameters on the notebook while you're driving. its highly not recommended and very dangerous.

so yah, i totally agree that we should get dedicated guages
mounted either on the a-pillar or cluster, or above the stereo...
even above the stereo is hard to read imo especially with a
2-1/16 guage.

got it installed. pretty cool, thought it was just going to
monitor intake temp, but it can also measure the heatsoak
that builds up inside the intake so its a pretty useful tool. :)

took me about 2-3hours total taking my time.

If you had a PSI*3 guage in your car you could read the intake temp (as the ECU uses this sensor) but not the charge temp. The guage also reads a whole bunch of other sensors that the ECU monitors. All of the sensors are allready there The guage installs in about 10 minutes

yah, i dont have one and my ultimate goal is to probe after the ic.

electronic guages take a little longer to install as you need to
wireup the module for it. other guauges that just taps into the
ecu are pretty quick... but not 10min.

okay. you caught me in a lie. It took me 15 minutes to install my PSI*3 in April. I could do it in 10 minutes now:disco:

man, you must work for a shop or something cause if i was to do it, 10min would only get me as far as getting the ECU out of below the carpet and solder up a wire onto the right harness...then it'll take me another 30min to wire it up to the a-pillar while deciding what to have for a snack after the install :lol:
