View Full Version : doing 30K personally, need some advise
IA Performance 07-16-2003, 12:24 PM Ok, time for the friend's 30K overhaul. What I understand is done is:
brake fluid flush
oil/filter
coolant flush
tranny flush
rear diff flush?
Is this it?
WIth the brakes, I've done lines before as well as new willwood calipers on my wrx. Am all I am doing is pulling one of the brake bleeders and draining the system through it, making sure the brake reserviour doesn't run dry as I add more. Do I need to do this every corner?
Oil and OE filter is no problem to do.
I've already done the coolant.
Here is my other question, when flushing the tranny fluid is it essentially as simple as the oil? Just unplug and refill or is there an order of flushing? I know the bleed order when finished.
All I know on the rear diff is that the drain plug takes about 150lb ft to get off :furious: Is this a required part of the 30K service?
Did I miss anything? Thanks for any help given. I'll be doing some of this today, at least the oil/fiter.

Reply: Yes, every corner. Bleed until you can tell you have new fluid coming through. It should take just under a litre; but I have never been able to do it without getting into the second litre.

Here is my other question, when flushing the tranny fluid is it essentially as simple as the oil? Just unplug and refill or is there an order of flushing? I know the bleed order when finished. Reply: Manual tranny, I assume. Just drop the plug and drain. Fill up with 3.8 qts of your favorite gear lube -- tons about this on site. Get a funnel with a flexible extension because the filler hole (dipstick) is in a tough place. Bleed order????
All I know on the rear diff is that the drain plug takes about 150lb ft to get off :furious: Is this a required part of the 30K service? Can't remember. I got mine off fairly easily, though. Just remember to open the top fill before you open the bottom drain. If you empty the diff and then can't get the fill plug off, then you are in trouble.

IA Performance 07-16-2003, 01:46 PM Thanks for the reply. The bleed order was meant to go under the brake area :)
Lastly, I'll be recylcling the body fluids. Auto zone takes oil, what about tranny fluid? Brake Fluid?
mhbrown 07-16-2003, 05:22 PM They take them all where I am from.

I generally use a turkey baster or large syringe to suck the old fluid out of the resevior directly, then fill it up with new fluid and bleed each corner until the old fluid in the line is flushed - you want to clear the old fluid out of the calipers since as it ages and takes on water, it becomes increasingly corrosive to the internals - so you do bleed each corner, but no need to flush the entire resevoir through any of them.
armand1 07-16-2003, 11:18 PM It helps if the transmission and diff are still warm, because their fluid is thicker than normal oil. Just drain them and refill; I'd let them drain 15 or 20 minutes before reinstalling the plug.
Don't forget to flush the clutch fluid just like the brake fluid (remove old from reservoir, add new, bleed at slave until all fresh fluid).
I'd change the power steering fluid, too (sorry, haven't done that yet myself).
Also, change air filter and (if you have one) cabin air filter.
As for fluid disposal, stores around here only take motor/trans oil. Coolant & brake/clutch fluid have to go to the city hazardous waste center.
IA Performance 07-18-2003, 09:04 PM ok, this am I finished so far is:
Oil/filter change
Brake fluid exchange
Coolant exchange
Air Intake filter replaced
Fuel filter replaced
Tires balanced/rotated
I looked in the book in regards to teh tranny and diff and stated only to inspect. This is for a stock wrx (not mine) and she babies it around town. Not sure if a tranny flush is worth the time as with the diff. She is going to mexico for a year with the car though and I want to make sure every service part is done before she departs.
ciper 07-18-2003, 09:12 PM Did you replace the thermostat?
IA Performance 07-18-2003, 09:51 PM I did on mine but not hers. Hence not doijng a complete flush. CRAP. That didn't make any sense till I hit reply. Is that what you meant?
What is the dealer charge for a 30K mile service?
IA Performance 07-18-2003, 11:23 PM I believe they charge $300. Total cost is maybe $100 with all new filters and fluids and plugs. If I wasn't proficient with Imprezas I probably would have sent her to the stealer, I mean dealer :)
MaddMax 07-21-2003, 12:54 PM Last weekend I changed the oil, front and rear diff fluids, and tranny fluid on my wife's Legacy GT wagon (4EAT). I had no real problems except that you really can't "flush" the tranny. You only get about 50% of the fluid out because the torque converter ends up holding the other 1/2 and the only way to get that out is by pressurizing the system. Also, I couldn't get the drain plug off the rear diff, so I just snaked a vacuum line in the fill hole and removed the fluid with my Mity Vac.

Where are the reservoir and slave for the clutch system? Do I need a special fluid for the clutch?
fredj 08-15-2003, 03:26 PM I beleave the cluch system uses ordinary brake fluid, DOT 3 or better. If you are using premium fluid in the brakes you might as well use it in the cluch system too.
Fred
I would also change the fuel filter.
BeeGee 08-19-2003, 12:29 PM How much is she planning to drive in Mexico? They don't sell Subarus there, so I would send a few oil/air filters with her as well. It could be a pain and/or expensive to get parts otherwise.
