View Full Version : Colorado Roads SUCK.

Fuquad

OK, I KNOW this has been posted here time and time again, but I couldn't find a thread to add to...

Our roads suck. :furious: I mean, I understand why, for the most part, but man... they really do SUCK! I thought so before, but now that I have my Prodrive springs, Rota 17's, and Kumho's, I am REALLY aware of it. I'm just waiting for a wheel to bend / break, man.

And, it doesn't seem to matter how careful I am about looking out for them. They are EVERYWHERE. There is more pitted pavement than smooth stuff here. Crazy.

Sorry, I just needed to rant. Glad I just moved to Highlands Ranch. At least most of the roads out here are concrete...

And what's with the stripping of the top layer of aphsalt and leaving it grooved for 3 weeks before paving?

Downtown they said they were going to pave it the week after stripping.

You can't drive anywhere these days without grooved pavement.

I-70 from the Kansas border is the worst interstate surface I've ever driven on. It's worse than the PA turnpike! What a way to say, "welcome to Colorado"!

Worse than the PA turnpike - is that possible?

That's how it was on I-70 from my house to school, every single day. God that was an irritating drive.

Yes. Maybe it was because I was in a Ryder truck with a hard truck suspension, but it was definitely the worse surface of I-70 all the way from the east coast. Thank goodness it was a one way, one time drive. I guess CDOT doesn't care since there isn't much civilization east of Denver metro.

These roads are way better than the roads in NY. I just moved here though, so my may likely change over time.

Check out S. Santa Fe between Mineral and just south of C-470. That's a REAL nice stretch. Especially going 55 or so...

As someone who used to live in the Denver area until recently, the roads there are fine. Try some NY roads, esp I-95 and then talk to me about rough.

Colorado wins hands down when it comes to
THE WORST DRIVERS IN THE WORLD.

i'll drink to that. it's rediculous. people don't understand the concept of fast lane and slow lane... or merging on to a highway for that matter.

The problem occurs BECAUSE people think of them as fast and slow lanes, therefore if they are driving at or near the speed limit they think it's ok to hog the left lane.

The left lane is actually an overtaking lane. You should move to the right immediately after passing the car(s) that are in the right lane, regardless of whether you're driving the speed limit or not.

yeah, its real nice but it needs to be twice as wide. I have to travel to and from Lockheed Martin on that stretch and forget about it during rush hour. At least it isn't the T-REX right?

drive right, pass left - nice website. i hope it grows for more entertainment. Also, i couldn't resist, i had to buy a shirt. too many times i get everywhere faster in the right lane than in the left, since everyone is sure they are going fast.

shouldn't people be embarrased when they are passed on the right. I know i alway feel bad if i am passing and don't get over fast enough, and then the really fast car jumps by on the right. i guess most people are just oblivious.

Anyone notice anything odd about eastbound 6th between I-70 and Sheridan? There's nothing apparent on the road, but it definately feels like it's oddly grooved, and the car goes everywhere. Very odd...

I make it a point they notice by turning back into the left lane right in front of them after the pass. :furious:

The trainable ones immediately get into the right lane as they have learned the error of their ways. ;)

I've been in NY recently , specifically Long Island. Worse roads and drivers I have not seen anywhere else , except maybe Iowa , where the left lane squatters have apparently made their home. And they also drive slower than the speed limit and travel in packs with the cruise control set. I made it a point of passing in the breakdown lane and showering them with rocks and grass.
Drive in NY , and then drive here. We actually have it pretty good here. Best roads I've seen anywhere : Chicago and Cleveland. The highways there are smooth as glass :disco:

I tried that years ago when I was 18 and ended up with a flat - apparently construction workers left a nail in the left shoulder lane.

Showering rocks is very effective on I-70 in the left lane in the winter, however. ;)

I've only done that once here , and the breakdown lane was nice and wide and smooth , I felt like cruising there the rest of the trip...........:D

i will be getting one of those drive right, pass left liscence plate frames. people are so damned stupid sometimes you have to spell it out for them. for example... last week i'm driving down I-25 and get behind slow traffic(instantly after merging onto the highway:rolleyes: ) so i get in the left lane to pass and there is a woman in a ford escape pacing the right lane.:furious: I wait about two minutes to do anything thinking she'll get the picture when she see's 4000000 vehicles behind her. Nope. I give her a little blip of the lights.(nothing offensive, just a little blip) after 2-3 tries at this she finally looks back... and gives me the finger:lol:
After about 10 minutes of being an asshat she moves over. As i pass by i wave and smile wich makes her furious  THen i immediately got in the right lane to show her how easy it was.

Just to play devil's advocate for a moment:

Colorado has no law requiring vehicles to move to the right lane after passing. The law entitles drivers to occupy the left lane regardless of their speed, except when minimum speeds are posted. However, shadowing the vehicle in the right lane does constitute 'obstructing the flow of traffic' and you can be ticketed for it.

Furthermore, there is no law that prevents you from overtaking in the right lane. And finally, it is illegal to flash your lights to request another motorist to move over. This is covered under the 'no brights when you are within distance X of another vehicle'.

That said, I share your frustration. But until Colorado law enforces internationally recognized lane discipline, this situation will only worsen. At this point, I figure I will make the law work for me if it is working for the left lane hogs. I now regularly overtake using the right lane, and the hogs be damned.

So I gather it would be legal to flash your lights outside distance X (say 25 car lengths or whatever)? I've flashed mine to give warning when I'm rapidly closing distance to the car in front when there is an open lane to the right since I'm at a distance where the driver in front may not be aware that someone is rapidly approaching from a distance away. And if the person in front does not move over, I do, however, there's always the idiot that finally decides to just as I've given up and begin to move over.

Where is the flashing brights legal? In other states? Countries? Or is this an internationally recognized signal?

I've heard firsthand, that in Europe, even if you are doing 90 or so in the left lane, and don't move over right after passing, very soon someone in a Mercedes/Porsche/etc. will be camped on your tail at 140 mph! That's pretty good incentive to move over even if you're already speeding at a good clip.

My buddy bent all 4 of his 18" 5Zigen FN01RC rims on Arapahoe Road doing only 35 mph. The worst part is that it looks like the state is not going to pay for the rims!

pace- i don't know about the passing on the right rule. i got pulled over for it once. no ticket, but the cop(who was very nice) said it was illegal. he might have been lying through his teeth, but that's what he said. if you are correct though, i will be passing on the right all the time until they fix the laws. thanks for the info :)

i think that a blip of the brights is leagal in euope. anyone know for sure. I was pretty sure it was the signal for "move over please" it should work even if it is illegal, but in my experince it just pisses people off. but sometimes there is no other way... i at least try to be civil about it though. i don't leave my high beams on or anything:lol:

Flashing headlights is common practice in the UK, as in other parts of Europe. I couldn't tell you if it is actually permitted by law though.

I think the cop was lying to you, or else he was misinformed (it happens). Admittedly I have not looked up the CO traffic law on right-lane passing, but have recently heard three different troopers say it is perfectly legal. I will try to find an authoritative answer online.

Ah, that's good news. If you could find a final answer, that would be awesome. I know it's illegal in North Carolina(lived there bfore CO), but it's a lot different. The Roads in NC are some of the best in the country, but the drivers aren't any better. There is just a lot less of them, and the highways are ussually more than 2 lanes.

I had no idea light-flashing was illegal. I always do it at night to warn people of elk in or near the road.

The other night I was driving down I-70 at around 7:00. It was totally dark and there was some idiot in a Lexus driving without his lights on. So I got behind him and flashed my brights, and the idiot pulled over. I'm just kept going though, I'm not going to waste my time pulling over on the highway to tell some moron that his lights aren't on. I bet he felt stupid if/when he figured out his lights weren't on though.

Passing in on the right is Illegal in the US, but I'm not sure what the penalties are. It makes sense as its better to keep track of the drivers around you if everyone consistently passes on the left. Which is why the left lane is the Passing Lane and not the Fast Lane.

Flashing your lights doesn't register normally in the US either. If you flash your lights at oncoming traffic, it usually means that there is a Speed Trap ahead. And flashing your lights behind some dumb-ass going 45 in a 65 in the left lane does register as "Get out of the way," but its their lane and they can do what they want. Hence, the obvious hand gesturing afterwards.

bclee
10-20-2003, 12:14 PM
In every state I've lived in where it's been mentioned in the state drivers manual, flashing your lights is a legal (and suggested) way to warn oncoming traffic that they will soon encounter a road hazard. Like animals in the road, or a wreck. I don't recall one where it was illegal.

Yeah, as someone who grew up in western Kansas (and spent as much time in Colorado as possible!) and now lives in California, I've always assumed California was a major source of left hand lane drivers. Out here I often run across a strange sort of traffic inversion, where the right lane is much faster than the left, because everyone is in the left lane trying to go fast.

When I lived in New Mexico, I could always spot a California driver if they were driving slow in the left lane, when I got close enough to see the tag they were nearly always from California.

And our On-Ramps and Off-Ramps could use a complete overhaul as 70% of them are poorly implemented.
